Thread: Schoolio's Movie Corner

  1. #29851

    Default Re: Schoolio's Movie Corner

Really looking forward to this one. I didn't really like the past couple from Jarmusch, but I'm very hopeful for this one.

Anyone snag some AFI tickets? I'll be hitting Her, Big Bad Wolves and The Wind Rises for sure along with probably a few others.

The Human Centipede II is worth watching? I liked the first one because, well it's just so DIRTY that I was intrigued. I mean it was awful but the idea is interesting.

It is very different and a bit more pretentious. I think if you enjoyed the first one you will at least be interested enough to sit through this one. It's more extreme than the first and ultimately I liked the 2nd one more. If you see it on Netflix there are two quick scenes that are cut out from the original unrated version.

I watched it in a standard 2D, non-Imax setting, but I didn't love it...some of the views were great, but thought some of the dialogue weighed it down, and didn't think Sandra Bullock was great in the role.

I preferred All Is Lost, a movie with a similar theme in a different setting.

All Is Lost was a better movie, but it suffered from the opposite problem as Gravity. The storytelling was pretty strong for the most part, excluding the first shot/scene, but the direction was awful - no sense of imagination or poetry in the way it captures time, which is a considerable flaw in a movie that does little else. If only JC Chandor wrote both films, and Cuaron directed both, then we would actually have movies that met their potential.

Gabe I'm inclined to admit that you were right about Gravity. I enjoyed the film quite a bit but after a few weeks I've found it surprisingly forgettable.

It'll probably be in theaters through February. I haven't seen it yet. I don't really love either of McQueen's previous films - Hunger was good but not remarkable, and Shame was a monotonous bore, though magnificently acted - so I'm not making it a top priority. I'm guessing I'll see it later this month. I've got 14-17 films to see at AFI Fest over the next week, so I'm just about set.

I liked Hunger a lot, but I agree with your low opinion of Shame.

I think the next one up for me is Dallas Buyer's Club, but I'll eventually see 12 years...but I agree with you...it'll be out for a while, and the buzz around it is such that I think I can wait and let the crowds thin out before seeing it.

God yes. That scene, although not nearly as complex as that "scene" from Children of Men, should be praised more often. How long was it? And unedited? The acting was just superb.

It was like a third of the movie. It makes all of the lyrical stuff in the rest of the movie work so much better by grounding it for that half hour or twenty minutes. Tour-de-force stuff.

I snagged a ton of tickets, several of which I probably won't use. I'm seeing Hong Sang-Soo's new one tonight, I absolutely can't wait for that. He's become one of my favorite directors over the past few years, and it's been easy to keep up with his work since he's been more or less the AFI Fest house band for awhile now. Also seeing the midnight screening of Ti West's The Sacrament tonight, really looking forward to that too.

Saw 12 Years A Slave. At times it can be hard to get through, because of, you know, slavery's ugly history and it's lingering effect in our country. Not to give anything away, but the ending is pretty anti-climatic, but I think that's in keeping true with the events.

Lars von Trier is giving up final cut of Nymphomaniac; will be seen in theaters as a four hour film in two parts, rather than the 5 1/2 hour cut he originally delivered.

I'm sure Schoolio will add his take, but this was one of the highlights of AFI Fest this year:

A really gorgeously shot experimental film from Ben Rivers and Ben Russell. Really pensive, for young directors these guys totally get it. Can't wait to watch it again.
