Already have a space cleared for that Zaitochi box set.
Cannot wait for Thief. Itll be like watching it for the first time since every transfer released since betamax has been absolutely awful.
Last week I saw Sion Sono's "Why don't you play in hell?" at the Egyptian as part of the Beyond fest with a DVDASA pre-show podcast. This had to be the most bizarre and fun film going experience I've had this year. The podcast was an interesting surprise as I knew nothing about it going in. As for the film? We've been treated to some good, yet sentimental, odes to cinema over the past few years. Why don't you play in hell? is gloriously absurd and one of my favorite films of the year. You could not wipe the smile from my face the last half of this film. Sono is a genius working on a totally higher level than many film makers working today I believe. I'd have to compare him to Miike because of how prolific he has become and how insane his films usually are. However, there is more of a method to his madness. I feel his films have many more layers with much more heart. He is easily, or arguably I suppose, the most exciting film maker working today. Go see this film when you can.
The AFI fest line-up is insanely good this year http://afifest.afi.com/sections
That midnight selection is sick.
Write ups, suggestions, explanations etc appreciate on anything great at AFI fest. Trying to do a couple full days.
My bro was watching Joshua the other night and I swear I wasn't barely able to look at the screen for half the film. first time thats ever happened to me.
I watched Mama the other night. it was pretty scary. It reminded me of The Ring in both visual style and suspense.
So far I've watched:
House on Haunted Hill
The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari
The Girl Who Knew Too Much
Don't Look Now
and Deep Red tonight, which I enjoyed but had a hard time with due its incredibly slow pacing. Some excellent visuals, and a predictably wonderful score by Goblin, but a lot of the plot made zero sense and I didn't get a whole lot out of it.
Has anyone bothered to see the remake of "Carrie"? I recently watched the original, and I was expecting it to be scarier....
I'm only interested in the remake because Chloe Moretz is so mature and such a badass.
Good selection so far Chris! I've been too busy in the last week or so to watch anything but hope to keep it going this weekend.
There is way more I'm going to be bummed about missing this year as opposed to the last year.
For horror films, you guys should watch Martyrs.
Also, THE GREEN INFERNO - i am so excited for that
Damn. Martyrs used to be on Netflix Instant. No longer.
Made me grab, jerk, and pull at times. Not porn, but Gravity in Imax.
The pilgrimage is not perfected save by copulation with the camel.
Tonight is shaping up to be a viewing of Evil Dead 2, if only because my girlfriend has never even heard of it. Also, it's a goofy movie and will counterbalance the downer endings of the last two movies we have watched lately (Night Of The Living Dead, Carnival Of Souls).
Downtown Independent is doing a double feature of drink-along of Addams Family and Beetlejuice tonight!
I had consumed quite a bit of alcohol while watching it last night, but at the moment I'm convinced Beyond the Black Rainbow is some kind of acid-influenced hallucinatory masterpiece. I've never seen anything like that. It's on Netflix Instant, probably not for everyone but check it out when you have a chance.
I feel like watching Fire in the Sky tonight while carving pumpkins.
Loved the fake Wes Anderson horror flick.
This thread is at its worst when it devolves into Criterion collector talk.
Just watched The Place Beyond The Pines and I really liked it. I thought it did pretty well at being an epic thing, more than some at least. The second act should have been cut 20 minutes or so though.
