I also think Jim Sheridan is pretty damn good as far as super-traditional, sentimentally-inclined dramatists go. He has a habit of casting Daniel Day-Lewis (My Left Foot, In the Name of the Father and The Boxer), which helps. I particularly remember liking In America. I can't vouch for his 50 Cent movie, though.
In America is fantastic. Second that recommendation.

Oh, and if you want to watch an Irish movie that is truly gut wrenching and depressing, check out The Magdelene Sisters.

Finally watched the Master. Loved it
Also, maybe it's 'cause there's been so much discussion around it.... but last night I couldn't really sleep due to my thinking and trying to interpret PSH's and Phoenix's relationship. That right there says it's a very special film.
SPOILERS
Do your past failures bother you? Have you ever had sexual intercourse with one of your family members? That scene was so great.
Also, one thing I didn't really understand. At the end when Lancaster says they fought together in Prussia and mailed out those pigeons.. is he talking about they knew each other in a past life?
Okay, that farewell speech he made to Phoenix was so good.
One more thing, am I the only one who had trouble hearing what they were saying? Even with my TV on super high volume I found myself rewinding many times to hear them clearer.

I am without a doubt a Harmony Korine skeptic, but Spring Breakers was fantastic. Simply put, it was a mesmerizing, existential fever dream of a film that was borderline meditative at times. The soundtrack/score worked absolutely perfectly. James Franco was nothing short of brilliant. It also comes as no surprise that this is Korine's most accessible work to date. Regardless of whether you're a fan of his past work or not, go see this as soon as you can.

It will absolutely disappoint. TallGuy is just a moron. Harmony Korine has never and will never make anything but shit. "a fever dream" is a pretentious asshole's way of saying "nothing really makes any sense and there's no cause and effect, shit just happens and it's really weird but since I'm an asshole I'm not going to call it out."
