Extremely late to this, but I'm also a huge defender of Alien 3, both versions. It has a lot of great character interactions in it. Besides Dutton, Charles Dance, Brian Glover, and Danny Webb are all fucking fantastic in it. Plus, Fincher did such a good job in those clautrophobic chase sequences where they're trying to lure the alien into the chamber.

I also quite enjoy Alien: Resurrection, mostly for it's pure lunacy. The casting of it is just marvelous. I'm a huge sucker for both Michael Wincott and Dan Hedaya, and of course Ron Perlman and Dominique Pinon are always marvelous. Brad Douriff as the main scientist steals the show for me though.

Aaaand on the topic of Miyazaki - Gabe, you're in for such a treat with these movies (not sure what all you ended up catching at Cinefamily). Howling's Moving Castle is unfortunately not nearly as good as it looks, though it is stupendously gorgeous. My favorite is Porco Rosso, but pretty much all are good.

I don't think I gave any, because I've heard of so few of the entries. The only one I plan on seeing as of now is Beasts of the Southern Wild.

Okayyy. The last lines from ‘The Night of the Iguana’. Couldn’t tell if the film was purposefully bizarre in moments, foot up their ass bizarre, or if it was the “pot”. Strong characters make the film including the insane bitch, old dying poet, drunken priest, survivalist painter, jailbait girl, native house boys/moonlight beach lovers, hardass proprietor, coming out of her shell elderly woman. Hell, it had everyone. Endorsed.

It looked great though but I should have figured when the screenplay was done by writers from Lost it would be incoherent. Also didn't like the music, almost too chipper. Still going to see it a second time just to fully wrap my head around it.

I thought Prometheus was very pretty. I saw it in 3-D.

Spoilers: The character motivations were so stupid. I really hate the ancient astronaut premise -- the idea that aliens engineered our origins, technologies, or civilizations. It just always feels like such a flimsy thing. I also didn't like the fact that they needed to make Earth endangered... I think it should have just been a scientific expedition to a moon they found that can possibly support life. They don't need to have curiosity in some convoluted nonsense. The curiosity can be as simple as "I wonder what we will find on this moon." I would have cut the whole Weyland stuff from the script. It was another example of flimsiness. David's own curiosity would have been sufficient for reviving one of the "engineers," without Weyland being necessary at all -- David obviously displayed curiosity with the alien liquid.

In the end, I did sort of like the movie. I loved how it looked, I thought David was enjoyably creepy, and I liked seeing how their actions might have led to the aliens. Let me see if I understand this: It seems like those little worms in the ground ended up infected by the alien virus, creating those alien snakes. Meanwhile, the guy impregnated Shaw, while infected, leading to the birth of a face-hugger. The guy (or one of the other guys?) ended up turning into a hulk monster -- I didn't understand what happened here. And the face-hugger, which is ridiculously large for some reason, attaches to the engineer and creates an alien... I don't understand why the face-hugger was so huge. Also, wasn't the engineer supposed to be in his spaceship chair when the alien bursts from his chest? It all seems haphazard, yet I enjoyed all the scenes in which these things came about. They were scary.

    Charlize Theron is pretty.

I agree with everything you said. I found the Weyland story completely unnecessary. Are we supposed to assume that Weyland also told David to infect Dr. Charles with the black goop? If so, what his motivation for doing that? Was it that he yearned for a longer life and was using Dr. Charles as a guinea pig to see what the black goop did?

This was so messy and poorly executed.

The moon they land on in Prometheus (LV-424) isn't the same planet/moon they land on in Alien (LV-426). So no, the two chest burst are different chest bursts, and I assume we will see the chest burst that we see in Alien in the sequel to Prometheus...Promethei

Despite its shortcomings, I'm definitely going to see Prometheus in 3D this weekend. However, the movie I'm really looking forward to seeing is Moonrise Kingdom, which I'll see early next week.

Is there supposed to be a sequel to Prometheus? Fucking dumb. Why wouldn't you just make 1 really strong movies instead of one ok movie and it's sequel which will most likely be complete crap.

I don't post in this thread much nor do I know if it was ever discussed but Black Power Mixtape is a really good historical archive from Swedish film makers during the black power movement. The interviews with Angela Davis, the footage they shot and the commentary from modern black artists is insightful to say the least.

You can watch it on Netflix.

Prometheus was a colossal disappointment. And why was it an R? It's not scary in the least.

But Charlize Theron did look gorgeous, as did Michael Fassbender. So there's that.

I guess 40 mins was taken out of Prometheus, that explains a lot

    edit: Spoilers

How the fuck was it that the goddamn robot was more human than the humans? Was the alien that killed himself supposed to be creating humans at the beginning? Are we supposed to be a missing link to the aliens? What the fuck was up with the ginger? Why did the chick give birth to a giant face sucker and not an alien? And if that was the first alien at the end why the fuck were there murals of them on the walls and ceilings?

I think it made sense that she gave birth to a face-hugger, instead of an alien, because the aliens come from the face-huggers doing their thing. I just don't understand why it was a freaking kraken instead of a traditional face-hugger. And I guess the space jockeys had seen the aliens before, but I think it would have been cooler if Shaw's pregnancy resulted in the first traditional face-hugger which would make the first traditional alien - as in the aliens from Aliens.

But yeah, was that space jockey guy making humans in the beginning? Because I also read this. It looked like he drank the black stuff that makes the aliens. I don't understand how him falling apart in a river can make humans.

Holy shit, I'm laughing so hard right now. That totally didn't occur to me, and is so fucking ridiculous.

The movie was a visual marvel (see it in IMAX 3D if you have a chance, it really was a treat for the eyes), but completely void of any kind of depth. Style over substance to the maximum extent. Ultimately, not quite as unnecessary as the Star Wars prequels, but almost.

The main problem I had with it overall is that nothing happened. In the original Alien flicks, the films build and build, then all hell breaks loose. It's thrilling, it's scary, you're on the edge of your seat. This was all build and very, very little action.

Really there's very little action in Alien as well. The difference there is the tension, but the action itself is confined to a few short scenes. This was more of a mystical sort of film though, and wasn't attempting to do what any of the others in the Alien universe have done.

Well, that's also based on the assumption that the couple are right in their theory that the Space Jockey actually created us. As the first scene with the dude drinking the potion is so vague, it could be interpreted any number of ways without supporting their hypothesis. And the fact that they share a DNA structure with us could represent any number of possibilities without necessarily meaning they created us. I liked the ambiguity.
