I just love that level of insight, where the filmmaker's perspective disappears and you have a character that you see with complete objectivity and compassion in spite of his flaws. I also love the fact that Bruno - and not his infant son - is the real "L' Enfant" in the movie.

I have a question: why didn't that baby EVER cry? That was not a human baby.

It wasn't sleeping. It couldn't have been sleeping the entire time. I heard coos here and there. Well, OK, newborns DO sleep a lot, but still.

Crap...I was going to see if you were up for Monday. In town family leaves Monday morning.
Incidently, there is NOTHING worse than having people stay at your house when you are sick. Nothing! Thankfully, "I got bettah."

my movie buddy isn't definate since she wants to go see that bodyworlds exhibit again. mondays are kinda bad. starting yesterday, i have geology on mondays until 9:30-10 in scottsdale. technically, i could do a showing after 10, but that might be late for you. i'm awake after class so i wouldn't really care. but if you're interested, let me know

I'd be up for that. Only thing is according to their site, last showing is right at 10. I'm open Tuesday, as well.
    Either way, I am there!

    "Ran" is amazing.

I haven't seen any other Kurosawas except "Rashomon", and I didn't like that one at all. I know it was very pioneering from a storytelling perspective, but the acting - even by period terms - was so atrocious that I couldn't get into it.

My stack is currently as such:

Movies I have never seen: Blue Velvet, The Death of Mr. Lazarescu, Nixon (a friend's DVD that was loaned to me about 2 years ago)

Movies I have recently bought and not seen in a while: City of God, Amores Perros, Taxi Driver, Raging Bull, Coachella, V for Vendetta

i know i'm opening myself to get schoolioed, but has Nicholas Cage done anything decent besides "Raising Arizona" ???

i remember seeing him in National Treasure (or whatever it was called) a couple years ago, & was like 'daymmmnnn, he is just sleepwalking thru this role.' he must be one of the worst actors employed right now.

    imdb

ok, i've never seen leaving las vegas, but that's the only other thing i've really heard good things about.

peggy sue got married, honeymoon in vegas & and it could happen to you were all movies where he didn't bother me, but he wasn't great or anything.

and raising arizona is one of the best movies EVER!!!

I'm with you on Nicholas Cage. I don't get it...he's overrated in the extreme.

I thought "Birdy" was pretty good. but I haven't seen that since it was in theaters, I may have a different opinion now.

i've never heard of that. but according to IMDB, it was directed by alan parker, so now i have to see it. midnight express, mississippi burning, evita and the life of david gale are all awesome movies.

the road to wellville though... not so much. maybe i just don't remember it well, i saw that in theatres, so i was only like 12.

"Blue Velvet" is my fave overall Lynch flick. Everything you need to know about a David Lynch movie is in there.

"Taxi Driver" is a MUST see, by everyone.

yeah, looking over his IMDB bio
i did like "Birdy" alot, good flick

Fast Times at Ridgemont High of course is a great movie, but Cage doesn't make or break that one, too minor

Didn't think his acting in Leaving Las Vegas was anything special

He was good in Adaptation, although there were other actors in that whose performances completely eclipsed his...

so yeah, out of the 59 movies he's done. i'd only recommend:
    1. Raising Arizona
    2. Birdy
    3. Adaptation

Forgot about Adaptation...Good call. Disagree with you on Vegas, but the others are solid.

The thing is, Cage is either awful, or he's brilliant. There's really no middle ground.

I will say that I didn't like "Leaving Las Vegas", particularly because of his performance, at all, even though that was the one he won an Oscar for. To me, he seemed like an actor who had never so much as sniffed alcohol, trying to play a drunk. I also have not - you can slap me for this - seen either "Raising Arizona" or "Wild at Heart", two alleged Cage classics from directors that I should not be slacking on. The latter I will be seeing at a midnight screening at the Nuart this Friday, if any of you Los Angeles-area types want to join me.

    Some great Nicolas Cage movies:

    "Bringing Out the Dead"
    "Adaptation"
    "Matchstick Men"

Some fun Nicolas Cage action movies:

    "Face/Off"
    "The Rock"
    "Con Air"

However, for any of these movies, we have to endure three or four "National Treasure"s or "Gone In Sixty Seconds" or - and this is the one that truly makes me shudder - "Windtalkers".

In "Windtalkers", Nicolas Cage gives perhaps the single worst performance in the history of movies. Worse than Ed Norton in "Red Dragon". Worse than Angelina Jolie in "Alexander". Worse than everybody in "Snakes on a Plane". Worse than anything Renee Zelweger has ever done. The alcoholic army man that Nicolas Cage plays in "Windtalkers" makes his "Leaving Las Vegas" character look like Brandon in "Last Tango" by comparison. I mean, seriously, I am now completely convinced that Nic Cage is a straight edge. He can't possibly have even so much as eaten fucking paste in kindergarten, for how inept he is at playing drunkards. My favorite part of "Windtalkers" - which, I might add, is possibly the most egregious entry yet in the "Hollywood can't make movies about the non-white man, so let's plug in a pasty star who has NO place here" sweepstakes - is where Nic Cage is sitting there pulling from his flask and he moans "no one else is gonna die" about three seconds before a bomb goes off that does, in fact, kill a bunch of people. My friend Dave and I recycled this quote repeatedly every time we saw those dreadful trailers for "World Trade Center" this past summer.

Then again, I have a friend with solid - if a bit too snobby for his own good sometimes - film taste who swears to the moon and back that Nicolas Cage is the most brilliant actor in Hollywood, and that he's incapable of giving a performance that is less than entertaining. I really don't know what to say to this, but the school of thought exists.
