The original Star Wars movies were great because they had great characters. That's what Abrams needs to get right. The dark themes in The Empire Strikes Back were so compelling because people cared about the characters. When Lucas tried to recreate those darker moments in Revenge of the Sith it was laughable because the characters were so poorly constructed.

I agree with you about the nice contrast that exists between A New Hope and The Empire Strikes Back. I'm not sure if the wonderment from a New Hope can be equalled at this stage in the franchise, or in this stage of movie history for that matter.

if .001% still create great music then there could be another Star Wars of imaginative feeling. Hell, we could do it. Flat colored landscapes, deep and determined looks, cool haircuts, gross looking juice.

I finally watched Upstream Color. Then a week later I watched it again. It's a puzzling but dazzling film that stays with you, it reminded me of some of Nicholas Roeg's films, with all of the rapid editing. I know several people on here loved it, did any of you write a review of this that I could read?

Last night I watched Don Jon. Nothing special, but it was good for a few laughs (especially in the first half).
We're here to play some Mississippi Delta Blues. We're in a horrible depression, and I gotta admit - we're starting to like it.

There are days when the universe seems to have no sense of humor......and then Irvine Welsh writes a sequel to a Harmony Korine movie and I get to break the news to Randy.

Of course it's nonsense - a Harmony Korine movie without Harmony Korine has no value. That doesn't mean its existence isn't funny.

LA Film Fest line up is out. Any recommendations? I'll be waiting a few more weeks for Snowpiercer as I'm not paying $175 to attend the Gala. Nothing else on the schedule has jumped out at me yet.

Movies I'd never heard of but am now interested in (bold indicates the films I'm likely to catch at LAFF)
    • Joy of Man's Desiring (new one from the maker of Vic + Flo Saw a Bear)
    • Uncertain Terms
    • Cut Bank
    • Dreams Are Colder Than Death
    • Nightingale
    • Man From Reno
    • Natural Sciences
    • Lake Los Angeles

Movies beyond Snowpiercer that were already on my list, but will probably wait until general release for
    • Land Ho! (new one from the maker of Quiet City and Cold Weather)
    • Love Is Strange
    • Frank

    Yeah, I'm not watching that
    • Jersey Boys
    • Jimi: All Is By My Side

I'll check out the suggestions, but I'll probably just skip LAFF this year.

So happy Harvey decided to back off on Snowpiercer.

    YUSSSSS

And the Arclight here is also going to play the 1954 original on the three days preceding the release, so we'll get to see that on a big screen whoo-hoo! (The eight year-old girl inside me is giddy right now.)

The best movie I've seen all year is Blue Ruin. It's a low-budget revenge thriller from a young filmmaker named Jeremy Saulnier, who serves as the film's writer, director and cinematographer. This is the most impressive piece of DIY filmmaking I've seen since Upstream Color. In terms of style it compares very favorably to a couple of Coen Brother's classics - think No Country for Old Men with an amateur assassin. The dialogue is sparse and the film is an intensely visual experience, with one of the more memorable main characters in recent memory. It was released a couple weeks ago in theaters and VOD. I rented it on iTunes, but in hindsight I wish I'd seen it on the big screen.

I saw that at AFI Fest last year - I dug it maybe a little less than you did, but I thought it was pretty solid. The friend character - and the fact that he was played by the same actor who was Buzz in Home Alone - was my favorite thing about it.

Funny or Die created a rather amusing parody trailer for Sofia Coppola's forthcoming live action Little Mermaid:

HOLY SHIT. Same actor who was one of the knuckleheads in Nebraska, right? One of the kids who was making fun of Forte's character for how long the drive took them?

Here's a High School buddy holding the Oscar he helped Framestore earn while he worked as a pipeline technical director on Gravity's visual effects.

Saw Locke...decent movie carried by Tom Hardy.

Some reviewers have compared it to Gravity and/or All Is Lost, but a more direct comparison might be Buried with Ryan Reynolds.

Blue Ruin is a C+ at best.

The Great Escape with Steve McQueen is playing in a couple weeks at the cinema. Never seen, is it worth going to or is it cheesy as a few of his films have been? IMDb hypes it up, but it's hard to trust them on older movies sometimes as they get heavily skewed through the age (although Spiderman 2 gets 8.6 rating and it made want to probe my anus deeply for cobwebs).

just not in the mood for a lot of corniness. No Gomer Pyle or Mash or the Dustin Hoffman w/Steve McQueen movie Papillon smilefest and sayings like "we'll make it through these times together lifting each other up". Want more of a drama ala English Patient, but preferably with more sex scenes. None or very limited smiling though.

I loved it, but it is definitely a Godzilla movie through and through. Same highs and lows as basically every other movie in the series.
