OOOOOOOOOOOOOOooooooooooo... that actually makes me not entirely dread this remake. Still pretty wary though. I'm curious now though--if they take Mars out then I assume they're completely redoing the storyline that was used for the movie... but the short story it's based on really gives you practically nothing to work with. Literally the only thing consistent between the story and the first Recall was the concept of a memory implant service.

    and don't forget triple-tits

And I'm pretty sure there will be another epic death match between his wife and Melina. One can only hope for it to end with Hauser shooting his wife and delivering "consider it a divorce". IMDB says his wife's played by Kate Beckinsale and Melina's Jessical Biel. I'd rather shoot Biel.

I've also read that they have effectively combined Sharon Stone's and Michael Ironside's characters into a single character played by Kate Beckinsale, so she'll be in it a whole lot.

Holy Christ, I just looked at the other credits of the director and writers... this thing is so fucked.

Yes, and the only reason Beckinsale is in it is that she's married to the director (they probably met while making Underworld)

    About Prometheus? Until recently, no.

Otherwise I'd have to look forward to something like The Sixth Element.

The blocked events in Quail's past did involve Mars but you're right in a fashion, he didn't go there in the time of the story and it wasn't particularly important that it was Mars. In the original short story the troubles Quail was involved with were all in the past. There was no reason for him to go to Mars.

It looks like the new film is taking the Verhoevenian idea of him being a spy/agent in the present and redesigning terrestrially from there. I am excited to see how it turns out and I certainly prefer this to a remake already hewing closer to the Verhoeven film.

EDIT: Oh, whoah, folks posting quickly while I'm fucking around eating ice cream.

perhaps no xenomorphs on screen, but apparently we do get at least one alien of sorts in a space jockey suit (the thing is massive, it can't be human).
And there must be xenomorphs in those eggs or else all of Scott's blathering about the space jockey piloting a "weapons carrier" might get him pelted in the streets with poorly thrown action figures.

I'm assuming he's going by Scott's explicit denial that there are any in the movie (or at least on screen), which is fair.
The facehuggers seem to be in there at least even if not directly on screen.

I realize that the campaign has done its damndest to spoil every last thing about Prometheus, but have you guys really spent the last page and a half arguing the contents of a film that literally hasn't been screened for anyone?

Margaret hits DVD and Blu-Ray on July 10th, with both theatrical and director's cuts. Rejoice and be glad.

Let's talk about Paris, Texas for a second. It was my first taste of Wenders' work, I watched it yesterday and really liked it, although with the scenery and landscapes I wish it had been on BluRay in the dark. An odd fact I came across - it was supposedly both Kurt Cobain's and Elliott Smith's favorite film of all time, which is kind of crazy considering how they both suffered the same fate.

One of my all-time favorites, Chris. So much so, that Bob gave me a long-since OOP copy of this for Christmas last year. Those two back-to-back monologues devastate me every time.

The film also heavily influenced U2 when they were making The Joshua Tree. All of that southwestern iconography was directly inspired by Wenders, another European who had a long history of being fascinated with the myth of the America, particularly the west.

Last Tango In Paris mostly seemed like desperate Henry Miller aping to me. I don't know. I hate everything any more. There were some fantastic scenes (Brando's character talking to his wife is the one that really stands out), but I just felt like "who gives a fuck?" for the first hour at least. Maybe it'll do more for me if I ever re-watch it.

I love everything Brando does in that movie. Maria Schneider's story does nothing for me, though.

Fucking excited to see the Dardenne brothers getting Criterion treatment - La Promesse (which I've seen) and Rosetta (which I've been wanting to see for about 6 years) will both be out in August, along with Quadrophenia, the gay British Weekend rather than the Godard one (which I still think is a foregone conclusion), and a silent film called Lonesome. Plus The Royal Tennenbaums on Blu. Good Criterion month overall.

I watched it last July and posted about it, which developed quite a bit of conversation. My short original post and then discussion (mostly praise) continues down:
    http://www.coachella.com/forum/showt...=1#post2228054

it's still the only Wenders film i've seen, but i found it to be incredible.

EDIT: Also, as I posted about back then, i highly recommend the commentary.

I think Paris, TX is absolutely enchanting. I have to insist that you guys watch Wings of Desire next, though. That one immediately leapt onto my "best films ever seen" list.

Cool, I want to check out more of their films, the only one I've seen is L'Enfant and I loved it.

I wonder how well Wings would play to someone that didn't grow up with the two Berlins.

As someone who seldom focuses on historical/political context in film evaluation, I can say that it plays great.
