getting front?

so me and my friends are first timers to coachella and we have like 2 artists that we really NEED to see, like our favorites. how can we make sure we can be relatively close to front?

when we saw them in our city we didnt drink all day so if we got front we wouldnt have to leave to go pee. bad idea--- dehydration. =[

It's usually not very difficult, but obviously it depends on who you're trying to see. For larger acts you'll want to show up a couple acts ahead, but for most non-mainstage/early day acts, you should have no trouble if you don't wait til the last minute.

hah yeah. he's driving us around and stuff, but not coming to the actual festival. i suppose we'll carry bakpacks and put like 10 waterbottles in each.

I was as close as you can get for arcade fire last year, and it was the worst mistake of my life

Plan on watching the band before the one you want to see (get there right as the previous band ends), and get as close as you can to the front; this probably means going to the right or left side of the stage. People tend to crowd to the middle, even if there is space on the sides. Then, when the herd.. uh, crowd leaves to go to the next performance, you can get a lot closer.

Depending on the lineup this can mean you are front and center, or you may still be a ways back. You might need to be there for 2-3 bands before the one you are waiting for.

last year i got all the way up front during gogol bordello pretty quickly. i even showed up a few songs into their set. best show of the festival last year for me.

also, in '05 there were only about 100 people tops in the tent when wolf eyes played. it made it possible for almost everybody there to be in front.

the crowds at coachella generally seem to have a nice sense of propriety and personal space during the daytime sets- usually if you're a serious fan, you can get to the front without an issue, at any stage (except for when someone really noteworthy is in the gobi or the mojave- nightwatchman/comedians of comedy, anyone?). at night at the main stage, it's a gamble- I showed up right at the start of RHCP and made it right up front without having to be a dick to anyone. for bjork, it was a nightmare. go figure.

For most of the daytime acts people would usually just find a nice space somewhat close to chill and then that would enable all the serious fans to meander through the crowd up to the front without a problem.

If you are going to be seeing a big name act show up a couple of acts before or else be prepared to be a dick and shove your way up front. Though, like previously mentioned you can sometimes find a nice way up front from the sides.

i tried to get up front for placebo last year, and was about 4 rows back during kaiser chiefs...when the show broke, those same 4 rows did not move one inch. It was pointless.

Nah, getting front isn't a huge issue except for the headliners. And like others have said, come in from the sides, don't shove your way through from the back. Also.. coming through as 1 or 2 people is much more likely to earn cooperation from the people you're trying to move past compared to leading a massive MANTRAIN of people through the crowd like an asshole.

Oh, and stay away from Bjork fans. Scary, scary bunch them.

I always go to the left and I don't know why.

If I'm up front, don't try to get in front of me. I'm not budging. Insults don't work, nor do elbows nor knees, or blows to the ribs. I'm especially talking to you gals who think men owe them a better place. I can't tell you how often I hear, "He's so rude" or "He's not a fan like I am." They see my earplugs so they think I can't hear. LOL. It's hard not to hear the constant whining.

It's a simple rule, first come first serve.

This works at Disneyland too. When the line splits, go left.

This makes perfect sense at the main stage, since 90% of people will be approaching from the right.

However, for the tents, it seems like most people are coming from the left. The Gobi is probably 50/50. I remember coming into the Mojave from the right for something midday, and it was so sparce.

Also seems like Outdoor Theater is going to have almost everyone coming from the left..

My policy is...if there's a decent amount of space in front of someone, go ahead and walk in front of them. I know I tend to hang back a little and leave some breathing room.

But once you reach that mass of people, find someone you can see over and join the mass. You should have been there earlier.
