negative, i'm asian =D well, i live in california too. i just think they've got an amazingly powerful sound, even just lisetning to them on the stereo its like a wall of sound coming at you. their live show is absolutely mind blowing, it's ridiculous how there are only 3 members and they can create such full sound. plus the lead singer is an awesome pianist.

I'm surprised that so few people on the board list Joanna Newsom's album. It is off-putting to some, I know, but it was absolutely brilliant as well.

    in no particular order...

the knife - silent shout (yeah, yeah, i'm jumping on that bandwagon)
    decemberists - the crane wife
    gomez - how we operate

i just started listening heavily to camera obscura's "let's get out of this country", cat power's "the greatest" and B&S's "life pursuit" so MAYBE that list may change slightly...

As a huge Muse fan before BHaR, I find this a bit suprising too. I think this album was a big step back for them. It's way more saccharine than their previous albums, and definitely steps over a cheesiness line for me in places (and not the ones I beleive they intended). Plus - I feel they have exhausted the arpeggio. I know it's part of their sound - but it needs to be reeled in a bit, methinks.

On the other hand, the increased poppiness and radio-friendliness does go to explaning their increased popularity. I also will not dispute that they are great live. Ah, the beauty of music subjectivity.

As for my favorite albums of 2006:

    1. Mellowdrone - Box
    2. TV on the Radio - Return to Cookie Mountain
    3. Home Video - No Certain Night or Morning

    Honorable Mentions:
    Earl Greyhound - Soft Targets
    Anathallo - Floating World
    CSS - CSS
    Peaches - Impeach My Bush
    LCD Soundsystem - 45:33
