Just saw Nicole Atkins in Austin, Tx at the SXSW concerts. I fell in love with her voice, music, personality. I saw over 35 bands that weekend and she was by far the best. Hope to see her back in Austin.

I meant the former, though not Motown...just white-girl-phoney-but-still-good-soul.

I don't agree with the "badly" part, but yeah...this is more like a jazz standard style than soul.

Her album is more uptempo.

EDIT "Jazz standard" isn't right either. It sounds like a 60's Bond theme. Anyway, I like it.

I bought her album a couple weeks ago - really enjoying it.

That video made me raise a brow though...she should've had a mic stand - she's kind of akwardly flailing about...

Hell yes to this. I remember seeing that performance on Letterman and being blown away. Don't know why this needs to turn into a race war on here. It might be silly to call Atkins' music soul, I agree, but I'd definitely say she sings with some soulfulness. The influences of and allusions to Motown, jazz, interpretive and lounge singers, Roy Orbison etc. are obvious, but I still think she's rather lovely.

Just wanted to let you all know that the Black Sea and I are going into the studio at the Seaside Lounge in Park Slope Brooklyn on January 2nd to record album #2. Finally! Helping us helm the record is good friend Phil Palazzolo (New Pornos, Neko Case) who I had the pleasure of working with when I recorded BVs on AC Newman's record. Hannahrain, agreed as well. I don't even think the new video is that special. But she's an absolute knockout live. The prospect of seeing her live (plus all the new music) is what's exciting for me.
