Thread: Help me understand Portishead

    Default Help me understand Portishead

I've listened to Dummy and it totally bored me. I felt much the same way about Bjork last year but started to come around thanks to you helpful people.

What are some songs to start with (include Dummy if you want)? I need a gateway song, something to make me hear what I've been missing, and maybe I can roll from there.

I feel the way someone who hates Radiohead would feel if they were headlining (sad and alone).

Off of Dummy? Roads, Wandering Star, Glory Box, but there are no bad songs on that album. If I had to choose a favorite, it would be roads.

My favorite song is off of their Portishead album is Over.

"all mine" was the song that did it for me. A tape of the postishead album was brought into my car in may of 98. I was hooked from that night on...

"Roads" off of their live album is probably one of the finest vocal performances I've ever heard. The only reason I would recommend against starting with that is it may set your expectations so high that nothing else could ever come close to matching it. But yeah, just do as I did and listen to the live album first, especially since that's a closer approximation of what they'll sound like on April 26.

if you want to understand portishead, take some really good mushrooms- not a huge pile, just maybe three grams or so. then smoke a joint, and sit in the company of a beautiful girl and listen to portishead.
portishead is the sonic embodiment of the subconscious female mind- confusing and beautiful, if sometimes almost inexplicably harsh.

True. I love them, but it's ok not to like them.

Still, sometimes I need to live with music before it clicks with me. Sometimes it's a state of mind, sometimes it a bit of a learning process. And my sometimes the taste doesn't mesh for whatever reason. frozen pilgrim's approach isn't a bad one.

Check out the song "Cowboys", I found that to be an incredibly accessible song when I first picked up on Portishead in the late 90s.

Everyone always recommends Dummy and while it blew me away when it came out I actually think their second CD is much better especially in terms of production. However if you weren't hip on Dummy you may not be into Portishead (the album) either.

Anyone that doesn't get Portishead should watch the Roseland NYC DVD. If you're still in the dark after that then you can take them off your list.

Braun, you shouldn’t feel obligated to get into any music just because it’s billed as the main attraction. It sounds like you've given it a go with undesired results. Who knows though? I didn't like the pixies for a long time until something just clicked and now they’re one of my favorite bands. Good luck in your musical quest.

BTW-if you have to be totally fucked up to "get" or enjoy a band they're probably not that good.

"Only You" off their self-titled album is what got me into them. I had bought the first Director's Label Series box set and saw the video that Chris Cunningham did for that song and loved both the video and the song. Soon after I bought both their studio albums and have been enjoying them since.

Off of Dummy... Mystereons, Sour Times and Glory Box.

Off of Self titled... All Mine, Only You, Seven Months.

    That should do the trick.
