Shade

Just curious what all you experienced campers have done in the past for shade. Last year about 6 of us ended up under a tent cover strung up between between two tents. Just wondering what a good tarp or umbrella type apparatus would cost. Also any methods for dealing with the limited space and fitting a tent as well as shaded area into the allotted space.

camouflage netting works well since it gets a lot of airflow. You could build a small dome out of pvc. Check out the plans here. http://www.geometrydome.com/ They go together really quickly. You'll spend a couple hours cutting and drilling the pvc in advance.

Here's the one I built last year. It will fit a 3 man dome tent inside. Those are 5' struts which I chose so we'd get 2 from each 10' length of pvc. It also fits in the car easily.

lol, the average temp in April is a dry high 80's, add a small breeze to that and it's very pleasant (even low 90's). This isn't August we're talking about. Wear a sombrero.

The temperature in your tent will be absolultely unbearable by 8am... shade is essential. Don't count on 80's.

By the end of April, Indio has an average daily high temperature of 90 degrees. It feels damn hot if you're coming from a cooler climate and you're not used to the heat, so people should be prepared.

I posted this elsewhere, but...



$30 at Walmart. Did a test run last weekend. I put it up in about 15 minutes, and five of that was futzing around because the directions didn't make much sense. It has rings on each corner, so you could hang tarps on the east and/or south side. And it's 8' x 11', so it fits within 2 camping spaces if there are only 2 of you. We put an 8' x 8' tent under it, with a little room left for two chairs.

BTW, we did all this in our Den, because there's 3 feet of snow in my yard.

Camo netting works best to keep airflow maximized. The design also allows you to easily get shade on the sides of the tent which is crucial for the morning snooze.

No worries. I also picked up some of those super spring clips at home despot for a buck each. Makes it easy to change the shade configuration as the sun moves.

Hmm..I'd like to see some science on amount of shade vs amount of airflow. Seems like heavy tarps would shade more than netting, but perhaps it would just be a sweatbox.

Maybe I'll hang netting on my canopy rather than tarps. I got that little Coleman ceiling fan that seems to stir things up well, but I might need another for exhaust.

I'm not used to camping in heat...all my gear is designed to keep warm.
