Thread: Vampire Weekend?!

    Default Vampire Weekend?!

I don't get what all the fuss is about Vampire Weekend? They just seem like a bunch of Ivy League grads who are good at marketing themselves as a hipster band... I can't believe that with all the reviews going on about their African influences with polyrythms and all that, that nobody's pointed out that they're just a poor rip-off of "Remain In Light"-era Talking Heads, with some "Graceland" thrown in for good measure. Need I point out that both of these records, in addition to being far superior to and less pretentious than Vampire Weekens, came out almost 30 years ago?!

    WHOOOAAAAA.

Hold up, I can see why you'd want to bring it up, but "Remain In Light" is wayyyyy too fucking good to be compared to Vampire Weekend.

I've listened to Vampire Weekend and it's enjoyable because... it's pop music. I've got my favorite songs off the album - "Walcott" being the greatest one on the album in my opinion and will actually be the reason I will never say anything negative about these kids (despite the hype).

But yeah, this is nothing on par with "Remain In Light" -- farrrrrr from it.

They write good pop songs. It's like Belle and Sebastian. They write songs that are catchy, entertaining, and that people can relate to. Without the internet, they wouldn't be nearly as hyped, but I really like them and they put on a good live show.

It's just damn good, fun music. I don't think it's particularly pretentious at all.

There's nothing wrong with good melodies.

Yeah, I don't think there is much reason to slam Vampire Weekend's hype at this point in the game because people were already talking about them since last Spring. Its all pretty much been expected, so why fight it? Now Black Kids, there is a band I got some problems with...

They are a really good band. they deserve the hype. If you don't like them, cool. But as of now, no one seems to agree with you. how sad.

    The name is cool.
What kind of music do they play?
    And are they worth watching?

I actually saw them opening for Grand Ole Party (who i've been following for years here in San Diego and are consequently playing at coachella this year) before I heard anything about them. I really became hooked at that point. One week later I started hearing them on Sirius radio non-stop, which I found surprising since I thought they were just a random opener no one knew anything about for a band that's only known in San Diego. I wouldn't say they're groundbreaking or anything but it's certainly a refreshing sound and definitely worth checking out live. They were very entertaining

They are selling out all of their tour dates. I missed out on buying my ticket, shit. I didn't have the money for it, plus I did not think they would sell out so fast.

Well, thanks for the empathy, but I don't really mind if some people disagree with me. I was bringing them up because I don't think they are a good band, rather, they're a dumbed-down version of Talking Heads circa "Remain In Light." Just because you're a group of NYC university grads doesn't mean that you can put your favorite bands in a blender, pour out the result onto a CD, and call yourself a band. Well, yeah, you can be an OK band, but not a good or original one.
Plus, the whole ironic-detachment vibe going on in their lyrics already got old in the 90's- just because you wear preppy glasses and sweaters doesn't make your lyrics interesting.

"Masnard Roof" reminds me a lot of The Beatles and Talking Heads.

They remind me of The Police more than any era of Talking Heads. That being said, Walcott and Campus are awesome songs. Vampire Weekend is a band I'm keeping an eye on for Friday. Pretty high up on my list, but not too high. Not higher than Jack Johnson if that helps clarify things.

saw them at their album release show in the virgin megastore, Ny then in the bowery ballroom, ny. Both great shows, especially the latter, since they actually played more than 6 songs.

These guys definitely remind me of a modern-day rendition of The Police, I'm really liking them. Pretty high on my list of bands I'm excited to see on Friday.
