Thread: The IDM & Downtempo Lounge

Default Re: The IDM & Downtempo Lounge

There was no tracklisting when I started downloading it. So, as I was going through looking at what was in it, I saw this
Portishead - Essential mix part. 1(23-04-1995).Mp3
Portishead - Essential mix part. 2(23-04-1995).mp3
Portishead - Essential mix part. 3(23-04-1995).mp3
Portishead - Essential mix part. 4(23-04-1995).mp3
Has anyone heard of this before? I had no idea. I'm quite excited to hear what it is.

edit: Its done. And TMB is free leech right now and I'm getting really good speeds. The whole file is 40 GB.

That's too much additional music. Awesome but just too much.

Just gotta draw the line somewhere personally. I like a ton of those artists but 10-20 mixes a piece is just more than I'll ever have time to listen to. That being said, anyone who is truly devoted and wants to cherry pick the cream of the crop from that list or something a few months down the line for the rest of us, that'd be pretty cool.

Well I was already going to do something similar. I was going to post a mix or 2 from as many artists as I could from the ones posted here. I never thought I would find something like that.

I'd love to find the best sounding and longest sets of a few artists listed especially Amon Tobin and Krush. I really hate live sets or studio mixes that are under an hour.

If you haven't heard any Superpitcher, the other half of the duo, I'd definitely recommend checking some of his stuff out as well.

Now that the lineup is released, maybe we can help some people out (including myself) in highlighting any acts on the Coachella lineup that could fit into this category.

As of right now, the only act that seems to fit the bill is Thunderball, who are pretty cool. So stoked to have seen them on the bill, considering I didn't even know they were still making music. They are on Thievery Corporation's label, and it shows. Kind of dubby downtempo with a world music kick. This video should give you an idea of their general sound.

And although the group isn't downtempo, I hope Leftfield finds a way to pull out this gem.

I wouldn't call it IDM. More like post-dubstep? Or maybe just tech house? I don't know. Who cares.

What I've been super into lately is that newish Fun Years album called 'God Was Like, No.' It's kind of like a more bedroom-recorded Tim Hecker, pretty much just looped and delayed distorted guitar washes and arpeggios. It hits the spot until Hecker's new album comes out next month.

I know post-dubstep is the term everyone's using for the Actress album, but it's home listening, album oriented electronic dance music that's difficult to actually dance to. As far as I'm concerned, it's motherfucking IDM. Same thing as Flying Lotus. You can call it instrumental hip-hop or whatever, but it's still Warp music. It's just the 2010 incarnation.

The two recent Thunderball shows I've seen were fairly more on the uptempo side. When he opened for Pretty Lights at the Fox it was very uptempo

Last night, Erika and I drove out to the opening night of the Sacramento Electronic Music Festival to see Tycho perform with his new live band. This was our 6th time seeing Tycho and 1st time with the new female vocalist, drummer, guitarist and keyboardist. Their addition has created a richer and more full sound that was really impressive.

One of the openers was a down-tempo/trip-hop quartet from Sacto named Sister Crayon. They performed before Tycho and were a real treat. They are releasing a LP on February 28th. Here are a couple of their videos:

Tipper's Downtempo mix from Shambhala '05(?) has been my soundtrack for the day. Such an amazing mix, but who wouldnt expect that from David Tipper?

I had it on repeat when I went in for Accupuncture today and it helped make the experience tenfold more relaxing.

Tycho has also made an appearance today, making today an extremely relaxing and amazing day.

Its impossible to feel stressed with a head full of Downtempo.

I'm pretty sure I've mentioned my affection for ASC's Nothing is Certain in this thread already. He has turned into a favorite of mine. I just wanted to turn people on to his Deep Space mix series. They can be DLd at his website. And, you can stream the last few at his official.fm site. Good stuff...check it out.
