Default The IDM & Downtempo Lounge

It seems like there are more than enough people here to support such a thread, so I think it is time to start one up. All of the electronic love on the board goes to the likes of Daft Punk, Justice, and the Chemical Bros. of the world. We need to give some love to the other side of the electronic spectrum.

So to all who listen to the quieter side of electronic music, who are you into?

Hell no. Aphex Twin. I like him loads more than Boards of Canada. 4 is one of the best songs ever recorded. It's as close to perfection as he'll get.

    Hmmm... Does Portishead count?

Cause Portishead > BoC & Aphex Twin.

    For me:

    1. Portishead
    2. Air
    3. Boards of Canada
    4. Massive Attack
    5. Aphex Twin
    6. Thievery Corporation
    7. Zero 7
    8. Morcheeba
    9. Autechre
    10. Supreme Beings of Leisure
    Upcoming Shows:
    * Dillon Francis + Anamanaguchi -- December 28th

Going to Weekend 1 of Coachella 2014

I like Aphex a lot, but I wouldn't even put him in my top 10. He is a little too weird for me at times. Ambient volume 1 though is a pretty amazing album. I'd probably have to put BoC on top as well, although there are many others that are almost as good, if not equal.

And sorry Passive, I wouldn't count Portishead in this category, either. From the looks of your list, we need to steer you towards some less "mainstream" downtempo as well.

Love Four Tet on his albums, HATED his live show. I actually walked out before he finished his set. He was throwing in this large distortion noise every 5-10 seconds in every one of his songs. That coupled with the fact that the openers started 2 hours late and I had to be up at 5 AM the next day meant that I left once hearing She Moves She.

I used to like more Autechre's Incunabula than Aphex's SAW2, but then SAW2 grew up a lot with every listen. SAW1 has a lot of great melodies there as well, sometimes better than SAW2, and Incunabula has some great beats. Each one of them have its unique wonders.

I love BoC, and I'm a big fan, but to be fair and trying to give an unbiased opinon I don't know if they are the top of everything ambient/downtempo related. MHTRTC was and is a very influential album for myself, and it still sounds awesome, but there are other great works out there. Global Communication's 76.14, FSOL's Lifeforms, Biosphere's Sustrata, or the last Stars of the Lid album are perfect examples of that. For a lot of people, those albums could top easily any BoC work, and it's not surprising.

Hey Orbit, I don't know why I never discovered this until recently. But have you picked up Tom Middleton's solo album that was released towards the end of 2007? I knew he was in Global Communication but I never heard about a solo album. It is excellent!

Yeah, well, I assume you are talking about Lifetracks. I think I posted about it a while ago. Anyway, I wasn't so excited about it before the release, because Tom kind of went bad after Global Communication, but then listened to the samples and sounded awesome. I got the album and loved it.

His 3disc compitlation/remixes just came out a couple of days ago, I havent heard it yet, but from what I've seen in the tracklisting it looks great, at least the 2nd and 3rd disc.
