Default CREATE A FESTIVAL - ROUND #4 - PEMBERTON VS. SUMMERFEST

Create a Festival - Round #4 - Pemberton vs. Summerfest.

Okay, here is the fourth and final match of the fourth round, which incorporates set times! You're voting on which festival you like the best. Take into account any type of factor(s) you want. Which bands you like the best. The location. The ticket price. The extras. The set times. Pretend if you had one choice of going to a festival, and you were gonna spend your money on one of these, which would it be? Whatever the case, you're voting one of these into the next round!

Voting will last 3 days, and you're only allowed to vote if you have 200 posts or more (votes are public, so I'll know, so don't waste your time if you have less than 200 - unless you've entered a poster yourself). And NO alias voting. If I even suspect you to be an alias, you're votes won't count (sorry bug, abe, granny and more).

    Winner moves onto the Semi-Finals!

Note: Kind of an unimaginative cop-out on Summerfest's behalf... Sheesh, you could have at least TRIED to name your stages, much less design a decent set-times sheet... Or get someone to do it.

    Now... Onto set times...

    Pemberton:

    Friday:
    (Lunch)
    2:20 - 3:20 - Mute Math
    3:20-ish - 4:20 - Booka Shade
    (Dinner)
*sit through the end of Klaxons*
    5:40 - 6:50 - Air
    7:20 - 8:00 - Brian Wilson
    8:00-ish - 9:20 - Amon Tobin
9:20 - 10:20 - The Rub (No changeover?... Unrealistic, much?)
    10:30 - 12:00 - Underworld (only 10 minutes? what gives?)

Disappointed about missing: Mogwai (why against Air!?)

    Saturday:
    12:45 - 2:10 - Andrew Bird
    2:30 - 3:40 - The National
    4:00 - 5:10 - The Shins
    (Lunch/Dinner)
    6:00 - 7:00 - Thievery Corporation
    7:10 - 8:30 - Portishead
    9:00 - 11:00 - The Cure
    11:00-ish - 12:00 - The Prodigy

Disappointed about missing: Minus the Bear, Squarepusher, and why the hell is Animal Collective playing AFTER the Shins?... WTF?

    Sunday:
    (Lunch)
    3:40 - 4:50 - Doves
    5:20 - 6:20 - Ulrich Schnauss
    (Dinner)
    *end of LCD Soundsystem*
    7:30 - 8:45 - Royksopp
    8:45-ish - 10:45 - Cream
    10:45-ish - 12:00 - Boards of Canada

    Dissapointed about missing: Primal Scream

Thoughts: Sunday could use some better lower-tier acts. Also, the EDM tent feels like it gets weaker as the festival goes on.

    Summerfest:

    Friday:
    (Lunch)
    3:30 - 4:45 - Cat Power
    (Dinner)
    6:20 - 7:30 - Feist
    7:50 - 9:50 - The Strokes
    9:50-ish - 11:45 - Royksopp
    12:15 - 2:30 - Thievery Corporation

Disappointed about missing: BRIAN FUCKING ENO. COME ON.

    Saturday:
    (Lunch)
    3:45 - 5:00 - The National
    (Dinner)
    6:10 - 7:15 - Gogol Bordello
    7:30 - 9:30 - Public Enemy
    10:00 - 12:30 - Massive Attack

Disappointed about missing: The Bravery, Spoon, Trent Reznor

    Sunday:
    (Lunch)
    2:30 - 3:20 - Andrew Bird
    4:25 - 5:35 - Aesop Rock
    5:35-ish - 6:15 - Okkervil River
    7:30 - 9:00 - Spiritualized
    (Dinner)
    10:00 - 11:10 - The Avalanches
    11:30 - 1:45 - Radiohead
    2:00 - 4:00 - Aphex Twin

    Disappointed about missing: Mogwai

Short and simple, Summerfest's Sat. has me seeing only FOUR bands... That's nuts. I'm going with Pemberton.
    Upcoming Shows:
    * Dillon Francis + Anamanaguchi -- December 28th

Going to Weekend 1 of Coachella 2014

just because a band plays before another band doesn't exactly mean they're smaller. If it was the other way around, the shins would hold a conflict with thievery corporation, i'm sure that would piss people off a bit...

oh, and the rub are only DJs, Underworld could probably start setting up towards the end of their set, and then take the 10 minutes to finish everything up

Pemberton's poster and set-times make me think of a quote from "Blue Velvet".It's when Dennis Hopper visits Dean Stockwell, after Dean Stockwell sings "In Dreams".
He says,"Goddamn! You are one suave motherfucker!"
    That's how I felt looking at Pemberton's set-times.
I've still got to look them over before voting...

    5:10-6:00 Felix da Housecat
    6:00-7:00 Thievery Corporation
    7:10-8:30 Portishead

    9:30-11:00 The Cure
    11:00-12:00 The Prodigy

Disappointed about missing: Of Montreal (wish they switched time slots with the Shins)

    9:00-10:30 Cream
    10:30-12:00 Boards of Canada

Dissapointed about missing: TV on the Radio, Deep Dish, and Primal Scream

    Summerfest:

    Friday:
    1:30-3:00 Stephen Malkmus
    3:00-4:25 Cat Power
    5:35-6:35 TV on the Radio

    7:30-9:00 Brian Eno
    9:00-9:30 The Strokes
    9:30-11:45 Royksopp
    12:00-1:00 Dinosaur Jr.
    1:00-2:00 Thievery Corporation

Disappointed about missing: Nobody, but I'm not really excited about how the night's ending

    Saturday:
    1:00-2:40 Klaxons
    3:45-4:50 The National
    4:50-5:50 Of Montreal

    9:20-10:00 Spoon
    10:00-12:30 Massive Attack
    12:30-3:00 The Knife

Disappointed about missing: Trent Reznor! Seriously, you could've had him playing into Massive Attack and Spoon closing out the Outdoor Stage and you would then not be responsible for the worst conflict for me in all of these contests

    Sunday:
    12:00-1:00 Liars
    1:20-2:00 Battles
    2:00-2:45 The Black Angels
    3:00-3:50 Caribou
    4:10-5:10 The Cardigans
    5:10-6:15 Okkervil River
    7:30-9:00 Spiritualized
    9:00-10:00 Mogwai
    10:00-11:30 The Avalanches
    11:30-2:30 Radiohead
    2:30-4:00 Aphex Twin

Disappointed about missing: Andrew Bird, the Stooges

These two are pretty evenly matched, but I've gotta go with Pemberton. Here's why: the way the set times are displayed for Summerfest is absolutely abominable. One should be able to look at the three columns and know which acts are conflicting with which. Additionally, as strong as its Sunday closes, there's over an hour at night during which I wouldn't be inclined to watch anybody, and I'd miss Trent Reznor on Saturday when he could take an earlier time slot that is presently filled by 2 bands who, while I wouldn't mind seeing and would probably enjoy, aren't bands who'd get me to attend a festival. I'd be pleased to see Yo La Tengo and Spoon on a line-up, but given the opportunity to see them or Trent, I'd rather see Trent a thousand times over. And yeah, Pemberton doesn't have any heartbreaking conflicts. It, too, isn't very exciting to me -- I'd see Brian Wilson and Cream primarily to say that I'd seen them live, but I'd only stay for 45 minutes to an hour because nobody else worth much of a damn was playing against them. But in this stage, that's the least of my concerns.

Unless the last quarterfinal set has some TRULY abominable set-times, this is probably the worst contest of the quarterfinals.

Still, props to Pemberton for sticking to original headliners.

Okay, let me just expand and say that Summerfest, in of itself, makes this the worst contest of the QFs by it's set times, alone.

I almost hope that we go back to midnight curfews for the next contest, otherwise I'm just going to make a nocturnal festival that runs from 6pm - 6am, for the hell of it... PRINCE: 3am - 6:30am!

    Pemberton
    Friday:
    5:00-5:50 Mogwai
    6:00-6:50 Air
    7:00-7:40 ATCQ
    7:50-8:45 Brian Wilson
    9:00-10:30 Bjork
    10:40-12:00 Underworld
Bummed about missing: nothing, really, except the bits of the sets I'd miss from Air, Mogwai, ATCQ, etc. Maybe one of them should be moved earlier in the day because the first several acts are...bleh.

    Saturday:
    5:35-6:45 Animal Collective
    7:10-8:30 Portishead
    9:00-10:40 The Cure
    10:50-12:00 Of Montreal
Pissed about missing: Thievery Corporation, PRODIGY. Why isn't Of Montreal earlier in the day

    Sunday:
    2:20-3:30 Battles
    3:40-4:50 Doves
    5:15-6:30 Sigur Ros
    6:40-7:15 LCD Soundsystem
    7:25-8:15 Primal Scream
    8:45-10:20 Cream
    10:30-12:00 Boards of Canada
Bummed about missing: most of LCD Soundsystem, TV on the Radio

    Summerfest
    Friday:
    3:00-4:25 Cat Power
    4:35-5:00 Olivia Tremor Control
    6:20-7:30 Feist
7:50-9:50 The Strokes (could they play for 2 hours?)
    12:00-1:00 Dinosaur Jr
    1:10-2:30 Thievery Corp
    Bummed about missing: nothing

    Saturday:
    3:00-4:30 Deerhoof
    4:50-5:30 Of Montreal
    5:40-7:00 Broken Social Scene
    7:10-8:00 Panda Bear
    8:10-9:00 Public Enemy
    9:10-9:50 Spoon
    10:00-12:30 Massive Attack
    12:40-1:30 Trent Reznor
    1:40-3:00 The Knife
Pissed about missing: Gogol Bordello, the Massive Attack/Trent Reznor/Knife clusterfuck

    Sunday:
    1:20-2:30 Battles
    3:00-4:05 Animal Collective
    4:10-5:10 Cardigans
    7:30-8:30 Spiritualized
    9:00-10:30 Mogwai
    10:40-11:20 The Verve
    11:30-2:30 Radiohead
    2:40-3:00 The Stooges
    3:10-4:00 Aphex Twin
Pissed about missing: the conflict between the Verve and Radiohead simply boggles the mind,

I have to wonder how bands with one or two albums would play for 2-3 hours at a festival when they don't even play that long at their own gigs...

Both fests have some great acts, and also a few bad conflicts, but I'm going with Summerfest because Pemberton's early in the day acts leave much to be desired.

Can we keep from doing the whole bashing some poster design because you think it's ugly or lacks imagination. It's fine if you don't like it, but I don't think we should start making fun of designs because maybe some people don't have programs/skills to make some killer poster...but so what? There's a lot more to this than just looks. Thanks.

Does this have anything to do with the new Polls forum? If so,I predict controversy.
    I love controversy.

At Summerfest I'd be overwhelmed with bands I want to see.

At Pemberton I'd be bored half the time.

    Summerfest wins.

I LOL'd. Man, hadn't even noticed that before. I mean, I love Cat Power and all, but if she were in the Sahara tent, I don't know how much dancing would be done.
