Default CREATE A FESTIVAL - ROUND #4 - SUMMER SOULSTICE VS. CASCADE

Create a Festival - Round #4 - Summer Soulstice vs. Cascade Festival.

Okay, here is the third match of the fourth round, which incorporates set times! You're voting on which festival you like the best. Take into account any type of factor(s) you want. Which bands you like the best. The location. The ticket price. The extras. The set times. Pretend if you had one choice of going to a festival, and you were gonna spend your money on one of these, which would it be? Whatever the case, you're voting one of these into the next round!

Voting will last 3 days, and you're only allowed to vote if you have 200 posts or more (votes are public, so I'll know, so don't waste your time if you have less than 200 - unless you've entered a poster yourself). And NO alias voting. If I even suspect you to be an alias, you're votes won't count (sorry bug, abe, granny and more).

    Winner moves onto the Semi-Finals!

Damn, this one was tough. Cascade has a couple more acts I would like to see. But back to back Massive Attack + Portishead did it. Also, the schedule arrangements for Summer Soultice are really good, and easy to read.

I have a feeling Cascade will win though

Cascade is absolutely insane. I can't help but vote for it. The film curations are interesting too, totally unrealistic, but awesome none the less.

Thats the bad thing about Cascade. too unrealistic. Fuck, the headliner play 3 hours each till 5 AM. and the first acts in the tents start at 10 AM jaja

Summer Soulstice got my vote - it is awesome. The only real problem I have is kraftwerk vs gogol bordello, but i'd live with missing a gogol bordello show.

Also, props to SS for using the no-curfew thing THE RIGHT WAY! Seriously, not having a curfew should mean that you dont even go past 3, and you dont put your headliners on last either; put something that people could jam out too. And (although SS did not do this), you wanna make that band that plays so late a band that people would want to watch some of - not a band that would more than likely appear on someone's "must see" list.

Cascade is extremely unrealistic. Are your headliners even going to want to start their 3 hour set at 2 AM? Good luck telling Prince and Bowie that they're gonna be up all night. And god forbit a problem or something that delays the performance.

These are both incredible festivals. This is going to be tough, so I have to break it down. What I would see...

    Summer Soulstice
    Friday:
    1:00-2:00 Grizzly Bear
    2:50-3:50 ASOBI SEKSU
    4:00-5:10 Blonde Redhead
    5:35-6:50 Doves
    7:15-8:00 Interpol
    8:05-8:35 Postal Service
    9-10:30 Massive Attack
    11-12:30 Portishead
    12:40-1:45 The Chemical Bros
Pissed about missing: Broken Social Scene, M83, The Magnetic Fields...wow

    Saturday:
    2-3 Spoon
    4:05-5:05 Feist
    5:35-6:35 Rilo Kiley
    6:40-7:45 Roxy Music
    8:15-9:45 Flaming Lips
    10:15-12:15 R.E.M.
    12:25-1:30 Underworld
    Bummed about missing: Spiritualized

    Sunday:
    2:05-3:05 Peter Bjorn & John
    3:30-4:45 Decemberists
    5:35-6:40 Dresden Dolls
    7:10-8:15 Jarvis fucking Cocker
    8:20-9:45 Muse
    10:15-12:15 The Cure
    12:25-1:45 Kraftwerk
Pissed about missing: Belle & Sebastian, PJ Harvey, Gogol Bordello

    Cascade
    Friday:
    9:30-10:15 Menomena
    11:45-12:45 Sufjan Stevens
    1:30-2:30 Simian Mobile Disco
    3:30-4:00 Deerhoof
    4:10-5:00 Battles
    5:10-6:00 Gogol Bordello
    7:00-8:00 Broken Social Scene
    9:00-9:45 Beck
    9:55-10:30 Yeah Yeah Yeahs
    nap until 2am
    2-5am Prince
Pissed about missing: M.I.A., and the Beck/YYYs conflict is brutal. And 9:30am is way early, so I'd probably miss Menomena due to sleep

    Saturday:
    10:30-11:30 Beirut
    2:15-3:15 Animal Collective
    4:15-5:15 Feist
    nap until 9:30
    9:30-10:00 Devo
    10:10-10:55 Fiona Apple
    11:05-11:50 The Knife
    12:00-1:30 Portishead
    2-5am David Bowie
    Pissed about missing: nothing, really

    Sunday:
10:45-11:45 Doves (would probably still be asleep, though)
    1:15-2:15 Cat Power
    3:00-3:30 Tricky
    3:35-4:15 Belle & Sebastian
    8:00-8:20 PJ Harvey
    8:30-9:30 Mogwai
    10-11:00 Sigur Ros
    11-12:30 Spiritualized
    1-4:00 Radiohead
Pissed about missing: Explosions in the Sky (why make the post-rock bands conflict?), most of PJ Harvey, and Sigur Ros and Spiritualized should really change timeslots. Sigur Ros definitely the bigger (and better) band, after all.

Ouch. If bands are going to be playing until 5am, they probably should not be the headliners. Maybe in the dance tent, because people are rolling, or the more esoteric acts should play in those late hours after a headliner.

I decided to go with Summer Soulstice because the hypothetical scheduling is easier on the brain, the riskier (but great) headliners, seeing Asobi Seksu and Blonde Redhead back to back, and an appearance by Jarvis Cocker. I almost went with Cascade because it's rather crazy and different, with another incredible lineup. Love both of them, so this was really tough.

I need to think this over too...

But the Kraftwerk vs The Cure vs. Gogol Bordello conflict is brutal. Absolutely brutal.

Kraftwerk doesnt really play against the Cure... they only overlap 15 minutes, it's not like that'll absolutely kill you.

but Kraftwerk vs Gogol is a rough one indeed

Yeah, location is not that good in SS. Still, i find it much more realistic that the other one. Also, notice that the price for Cascade is $200?if it were a real festival the would go broke! Imagine paying Bowie, Prince and Radiohead to do a 3 hour set EACH, plus the rest of the bands. insane.

Cascade had a reasonable chance of winning this before the set times came out...but now, i doubt they'll even make the semifinals...headliners till 5AM? no thanks...

    1:00-4:00 Radiohead

Disappointed about missing: Belle & Sebastian (wish they could switch time slots with Explosions in the Sky), Ween, Yo La Tengo, and Mogwai. And yeah, Sigur Ros and Spiritualized should switch time slots, too.

Tough call, both festivals are really strong, but even though Cascade would be my amphetamine weekend, it has fewer conflicts and more bands that I'd eager to see. Check out Saturday: FSOL -> Fiona Apple -> The Knife -> Portishead -> David Bowie. That's fucking sick! SS's Lemon Jelly -> Massive Attack -> Portishead -> Chemical Brothers on Friday is also pretty damn amazing but for me, the Knife, Fiona Apple, FSOL, and David Bowie overwhelm Lemon Jelly, Massive Attack, and Chemical Brothers. Cascade for the win.

    6:30 - 7:30 - Lemon Jelly
    8:00 - 9:00 - PJ Harvey
    9:00-ish - 10:00 - EITS
    11:00 - 12:30 - Spiritualized

Disappointed about missing: Mogwai, Doves (what the fuck are they doing playing at 10:45 in the morning?).

    -------------

    Verdict: Summer Soulstice

Both festivals are great, but with the hour long waits on virtually every stage at some point on every night, and the fact that the film thing, while innovative, is very... Flimsy. I was kinda expecting a list of known directors and what-not participating in the festival, or at least a short-list of more than just 2 curators. That and, despite the fact that SS has more acts I'd miss that I'd be hurt about, SS has me on my toes the entire evening. And no ridiculous 1-5am headliners, what the fuck?
    Upcoming Shows:
    * Dillon Francis + Anamanaguchi -- December 28th

Going to Weekend 1 of Coachella 2014

I'm voting for Cascade because it has Bowie,Prince AND Radiohead.

Just kidding.I like both festivals alot, and they've both done something right to make it this far without being pitted against Lighthouse.Summer Soulstice is a very nicely designed poster, with well-thought-out set-times AND Teenage Fanclub. That was great out of the box thinking right there.No-one else had that one.
I also really like the graphics on the Filmdome set-times for Cascade.I must admit to a slight disappointment with the Film School aspect as well.I don't know what I expected exactly, but this is where I expected to be wowed, and I'm not sure if I was.Still an original idea, though and that's worthy of reward.
    Cascade.

Im going with Summer Soulstice. The poster is well designed and easy to read. I think I also like the Summer Soulstice line up better.

Ooh, this one is awfully close. But for votes that actually count, it's not AS close. Cascade is winning 20-16. (IdiotequeThom indicated before that his votes count since he was involved in the contest. If that is not the case, then the tally is 19-16. Still too early to call.)

EDIT: Despite SS's surge, only one of its new votes actually counts, as the tally at the moment is 21-17. Man, this contest and the Pemberton/Summerfest one are being raided by n00bs who are fucking up the numbers.

I am leaning towards Summer Soulstice. The Friday set-times are awful - personal clusterfuck before 3:45, nothing until 7:15, clusterfuck thereafter - but Saturday and Sunday turn out alright.

It is nice, theoretically, that Cascade offers music from 9 am to 5 am but that's unworkable over a three day weekend. Maybe they let you move freely between onsite camping and the performance stages; even then that doesn't sound like I could make up enough sleep to pay attention. So, say, come 2 pm on Sunday I'm going to look at having to choose between Mark Lanegan, Cat Power and Bat For Lashes with Brian Jonestown coming right up... I'm going to pick sleeping.

Also I don't want to try to make sense of those set-times cards again, which is a shame; the overall visual design is superior in every sense but readability.

If IdiotequeThom's vote does indeed count, Cascade is surprisingly winning 22-21. What's with all the new people with 0-8 votes voting for Summer Soulstice? I haven't seen many of them voting in other contests. Things that make you go, "Hmm..."

Hahahaha, Gabe, take your Cascade festival and stick it up your ass. I'm voting against you JUST because of Vincent Gallo.

And it's officially all tied up! The tension builds...

EDIT: Although I know for a fact that Cascade isn't Gabe's festival.
