    Default Keeping the tent cool?

Couldn't find a dedicated thread on this topic so I figured I'd ask you guys for hints on keeping your tent cool enough to sleep past 8am.

And... my pseudo artistic representation of what it feels like...

Get a fan, and also a canopy would be a good idea if you can split the cost with your friends.

I am gonna get a canopy this year and split the cost with my friends.

And orbit already called camping next to me to steal some of my shade. So of anyone was thinking about it... there goes that idea!

Where can you buy those canopies? Wal Mart? Here in Calgary I would never need much of a canopy so I am not sure. Wal Mart HOPEFULLY should have some that I can buy in palm springs, rather that then take that much more with me down there.

Trying to decide my whole tent/potential canopy options. I think an army surplus store might have some good stuff, but chances are its bulky/heavy/not going to be within my airplane luggage allowance.

You dont need any heavy duty canopies. Just one big enough so that it provides shade for your tent.

I just picked up a brand new 10x10 canopy off craigslist for $25 yesterday. You can try that option. It folds down pretty small and fit easily in the trunk of my Honda Civic.

Magnet secures fan without harming tent material. Strong air movement with 16-hour continuous run time. Soft pliable fan blade. Mountable anywhere. Operates on 1 D-cell battery (not included). Wt. 1.7lbs.

Any shade device that covers your tent or where your sitting is by far the most effective way to escape the heat... sort of.

I've heard those tent fans don't do much.

this would actually be great if it ran on batteries other than a 12 volt / required a small generator...

Not going to "cool it off", but ventilation will help it from getting hotter. Moving air is always better than stagnant in the heat.

It won't cool your tent off, but it helps take the edge off if you think you're about to collapse: an air mattress pump doubles as a fan.

Yep, with the meager allotment of tent space you get, there's next to NOTHING that can be done if the heat is as bad this year as it was last year. You simply cannot create shade that is deep enough to even handle the temp, let alone sleep. Canopies and fans would have been a damn joke. Saturday it was 105 out there by noon. All of my toiletry bottles melted, folks. MELTED. In '07 your only hope was to get over to the clubhouse as early as possible and stake out a place on the benches or grass to lie down and drink water. And don't forget your electrolytes. A friend had to go find a vendor who would actually give him raw salt so he wouldn't pass out from heat stroke.

Now 2005 wasn't bad when there was actually green grass on the campgrounds (dunno what happened there) and the temps were about 10-15 degrees cooler. Getting on your knees and praying for grass and cooler temps will actually help loads more than silly magnet fans and canopies.

i brought one of those hanging tent fans last year - it did absolutely nothing unless i was holding it 2 inches away from my face. i saw this camping airconditioner on some website though, and all you need is ice...i suppose that could work depending on how you're traveling and how big your tent is.

They actually help a lot, especially if you use a couple/few of them.

Also, make sure your fly is on your tent while you're gone during the day. Like the canopy, it will shield some of the sunlight and heat.

The canopies help a lot, I'm bringing mine, feel free to share if you beat others out to the spot. Those who asked where canopies are sold: Target, Walmart, Kmart, big sporting goods stores. They're with general camping supplies. Make sure yours includes a way to secure it to the ground. It was windy at night and some people's canopies were trying to "take off."
