I think they needed more than 10 episodes too. They talked about it in the DVD commentary. They didn't have the normal 12, and they had to pack a lot into the hours they did. That's why things seem to move a little faster, and we don't really get to know the reporters very well. In season 2, for example, they threw a bunch of new characters at us. But they had a lot of scenes that were there for no other reason than endearing the dock guys to us. There were a couple of scenes like this with the reporters (Alma waking up early to get a copy of the paper with her story, Gus waking up in the middle of the night concerned about an error), but not nearly enough. Think about how well we knew Ziggy...we saw his dick like three times.

i'm now seriously considersing saying i'm from baltimore as an experiment

If you need to impress a white person, tell them you are from Baltimore. They will immediately ask you about The Wire and how accurate it is. You should confirm that it is “like a documentary of the streets,” the white person will then slowly shake their head and say “man” or “wow.” You will be seen in an entirely new light.

I found the newspaper stuff infinitely more interesting than a lot of the subplots they've had on other episodes. It was good stuff and thoroughly relevant to the times in a big picture way. Especially considering how that is where all the material for The Wire actually came from, I felt a warmth in it that I just didn't get off the shit about the port or the schools. I didn't give a fuck about the Polacks or the hoppers. Dunno why.

The serial killer line was far fetched but it's like Catch-22. It paints a more accurate dramatization of the state of things through a certain degree of absurdity. Also, it's not exactly the first time The Wire's been really fucking far fetched.

Season 2 sucked sooooo bad that it totally killed all the hard work that was done in 1 and all the rest of The Wire that the whole thing becomes totally shit.

First 2/3 seasons of The Shield are brilliant tho

Just finished season 2. I didn't really dig the docks stuff too much but it was still pretty engrossing, just not quite as much as season 1. Also, I love that John Waters' regular production designer (Vince Peranio) and casting director (Pat Moran) work on the show.

^It's probably because they're quite familiar with Baltimore.

And I thought season 2 was awesome. Especially after you finish the series, you realize the role of season 2 in the whole story.

It was really well done. I just can't stand working class white boy union shit. I hated almost all of those characters. Not that you necessarily have to like characters for something to be good . . .

Season 2 gets a lot better when you're done with the whole series. It's also much better upon repeat viewings. Ziggy could be one of the least admirable characters in any season. Plus it's hard to be sympathetic for a guy who keeps showing you his dick.

i've seen all the seasons and just finished re watching up through the end of the 3rd season and about to begin the fourth for the second time. i honestly don't understand people's dislike of the 2nd season. it adds so much to the scope of the city and the overall issues as a whole. i think the second season is a major leap in showing the audience the city as a whole and elevating the series into a realm of ambition that tv shows rarely see.

    best tv series ever.

Finished the second season a couple of days ago. I thought it was great and, as Sleepybrew mentioned, I don't get the dislike. It was quite interesting, if a bit different.

I love The Wire so much that, instead of spending Valentine's Day with the multitudes of women who are beating down my door, I watched six episodes of Season Three. Booyah.

The Wire will never betray you. Greatest Valentine ever.

Season 2 is by no means bad, and I appreciate it for what it is. There are some killer moments and themes worked out. I just didn't really care for any of the dock characters. And I don't even consider that a fault in the show, because those type of people do exist and the way they were portrayed was masterfully done, but I just didn't all that much enjoy spending time with them. So it's just my least favorite season to actually sit down and watch thus far.

I hear that. I'm struggling with Season 3 thus far. It's just not gelling yet for me.

Season 3 did seem to kind of meander and take awhile to get its legs. Season 4 is fucking devastating though. Good things are ahead.

Season 3 started gelling at episode 7. I have a couple of episodes left. Shit is getting good. I can't get over how impeccable the writing is for this show.

I started watching the Wire from day one. I stopped when I got part way through Season 2 because it didn't hold my interest anymore(the dock story).
Just rewatched Season 1 and realized I seriously need to reinvest in this series.

Season 5 opening scene: fucking hilarious. This show is far funnier than most comedy shows I've seen (The Sopranos was too; good comedy = good drama). On the topic of opening scenes, I ran across this: http://blog.nj.com/alltv/2008/01/keys_to_the_wire.html . There's spoilers, so don't read the write up on a season you haven't finished yet. Also, there's this for season 5: http://www.avclub.com/tvclub/tvshow/the-wire,31/ . I don't know what I'm going to do when I finish this season.

wait till you get to the end of season 5, along with the ending montage, one of the best things of the series.
