absolutely true, plus we got introduced to Chris and Snoop that season as well. I think season 4 also really showed the hopelessness of Baltimore clearer than any other season.

    Slight spoiler

we finally see what happens with Carcetti when he takes control. Nothing changes he is forced to eat the same shit that Royce had to eat before him. We also see where Omar, Avon, and Bubbles come from with the kids story. That story line really got to me.

This could be the best part of it. The stories of those four kids give us more insight into the streets than anything before it. And the stories that continue in season 5, particuliarly DuQuans (sp) show us even clearer how hopeless it is there for even bright kids.

My two favorite characters. Aside from Omar who is obviously the best character on the wire.
I am neither foxy, nor a lady.

Neil Young - Kanye West - Beck - PJ Harvey - The Knife - Basement Jaxx - Tom Waits - Shpongle (Live) - Flying Lotus (Live) - The Avalanches - Autechre - Eels - Fat Freddy's Drop - Liquid Liquid - OFWGKTA - Freddie Gibbs - Big K.R.I.T. - Phantogram - Christian Scott - Nosaj Thing - Gold Panda - James Blake

I'd rank my favorites like this:
    4
    3
    1
    2
    5

Although I think all of them are close, with five being the only notable exception. I don't like the police story line in season 5.

Agreed about 2. And I think the more I watch 2, the more I like it.

should start season 3 later today, with all the praise for 3 and 4 i'm looking to it.

edit: i've enjoyed every minute. season 1 over 2 for me, but they've both been great.

the wire is the best tv series i've ever seen. perhaps i haven't seen enough. but nothing comes close to the scope, themes, script and execution on the the wire
    favorite seasons:
    4
    1
    2
    3
    5

4 is my favorite, but depending on which characters or specific plot line i happen to be remembering, 1-3 are interchangeable. 5 is great, but not like the rest

I haven't come across a show that compares to The Wire.

agree. lost, dexter, arrested development, seinfeld, south park, all these and more are great. but the wire just stands out amongst even the best

Have any of you guys seen Breaking Bad? You can't compare it to The Wire. But it's intense and a really well done show.

Generation Kill(also done by David Simon) is pretty fantastic. More of a mini-series though.

I'm also super pumped about David Simon's New Orleans show that hits HBO in April. I don't remember the name, but I know Wendel Pierce, the guy who played Bunk, is in it. And he's also a New Orleans native. It should be good.

watched the first four episodes of season 3, and its easy to tell that the series was hitting its stride. the writing and acting is right on.

also, after 2 1/2 seasons drunk mcnulty is still unintentionally hilarious

for me, season 3 is the hidden jem. its not my favorite, cause 4 and 1 take that. and i really think 2 is invaluable to providing the whole scope of the city and the series. but 3 ties it all together, almost like a preemptive closure to the series. i think 3's closure sets up season 4 and let's the writers go where they initially wanted...the root of everything. but season 3 also allows for the developement of the characters and how they'll play out in 4 and 5.
fuck, the whole thing is brilliant. i've seen all of the episodes and just finished season 1 on a second viewing. never thought i'd enjoy a tv series more on the second viewing, but so far i am. such a good testament that this show will be remembered

just finished season 5, and i now believe the hype. it's probably the best tv series i've ever watched, and i was skeptical going in. it started reaching a very high level at season 3 for me, not to say season 1 & 2 were bad, but that's when the show seemed to be hitting its peak, or prime to use a sports metaphor. covered so many areas: politics, the education system, drug addiction, drug selling, the judicial system, living in poverty, journalism, the police system, etc., and it covered each subject probably better than any show has before or since. i'm very happy i took a chance on it, and will probably recommend to many friends from here on out.

    here's how i rank them:

    3
    4
    5
    1
    2

I just started watching this last week and am now on Season 2. It's like crack. I'm not going to read this thread anymore because I don't want to know anything about the other seasons. Really good though.

Maybe it's just me, but I think season 5 is far and away the weakest. Although it's still incredible because it's The Wire.

season 1 could very easily jump over season 5 for me. somewhat spolier ahead.....i didn't really like the whole mcnulty making up murders bit, and felt like the only cliched thing about the series. but that's my only compliant with the whole series.

Almost finished with my first run through season one. Good stuff. Some of the support acting is a little rougher than I expected, and the tone during the first half of the season is considerably lighter than I was anticipating, but I'm hooked. Sat through like 6 hours of it today.

I thought the stuff on the street was better than ever. But there's no way to make print journalism exciting, and the seriel killer line was far fetched.
