Default Sharon Jones and the Dap Kings

Let me start as saying that I've pretty much seen about 35% of the acts in this years coachella and the one that is really really impressive live that no one seems to be talking about is Sharon Jones And DKs. I saw them at the el rey. The band is super tight and her energy and power of her voice is on par w/ the late James Brown himself. Don't sleep on this group. She blows Amy Winehouse (on a sober and good day) out of the water as a live performer.

I Sharon Jones and the Dap-Kings

Gobi Tent would be too small for the amazing Sharon Jones and the Dap-Kings. I guess that's all right AND they better not fucking conflict with The Swell Season or Stars or Animal Collective or The Bees or The Verve or Raconteurs or Jens Lekman or Rogue Wave or Architecture in Helsinki or The National or Adam Freeland or Madness or the Breeders or Battles or Aesop Rock or Pendulum or Vampire Weekend or Modeselektor or Mum or Diplo or dan dela sac or Minus The Bear.

HOLY SHIT! Friday is actually awesome!

    GV,

Please put Sharon Jones and the Dap-Kings up vs. Jack Johnson AND Tegan and Sara AND Dan Deacon AND okay (I can skip this one - but it's going to hurt) Fatboy Slim AND Slightly Stoopid!

Sharon Jones and the Dap-Kings would be an amazing closer for the Mojave tent.

    Especially against Jack Johnson.

I'm saying this while listening to my first SJ&DK song...

    Amazing.

I'll be watching their set. I just heard about them a couple months back through an interview on Fresh Air, was very impressed. They're definitely one of the best performing bands on the lineup this year.

I'm really looking forward to them as well.

Such a classic soul sound. Sounds exactly like it would have came from 1970
They will be at THe Hollywood bowl on July 20 as well.

    Also on KCRW's world fest:

    gilberto gil/devenra banhart

    gnarls barkley

    Ub40 hosting reggae night 7

and 2 more dates to be announced.

I've SJ&TDK about five times and have never been disappointed. I think they'll be a huge hit at Coachella, especially with people who have never seen or heard them. As much as I'd like to see them in a sunset slot on the smaller outdoor stage (I forgot the name) I think they'd be better inside one of the tents.

I don't get it. Sharon Jones sounds like a traditional soul singer...Why is this at an indie festival? I'm not saying she's not talented, but how does it fit the mold of coachella??? She is on Sirius Left of Center as well...why wouldn't she be on the soul/funk channel?

    I'm confused.

Um... Sharon Jones is backed by the same band that Mark Ronson (good producer, godawful artist) used for Amy Winehouse's Back to Black. Same Motown influences. Nearly the same kind of vocals, except Sharon's ACTUALLY black. Plus she kicks ass... So that's why she's there.

Yeah...Amy Winehouse is not indie pop. She's soul, for sure.

I'm listening to SJ for the first time right now...I like it way more than Amy Winehouse, I'll definitely do my best to check her out.

The new album "100 Days, 100 Nights" is good, but the last one, "Naturally" is their best...

Quick question, do you know if Gilberto Gil and Devendra Banhart are co-headlining, or is one opening up for the other?

I'd love to see Sharon Jones at the Hollywood Bowl.

uhh, this isnt an "indie" festival - it's a music festival. Change your diaper.

Do you not want Goldenvoice to branch out if it means bringing in fucking amazing live artists like Sharon Jones and the Dap Kings? Seriously, their show at the El Rey was astounding. She's gotta be close to 50 if not older, and she had more energy than anyone I've ever seen at the El Rey. She was just captivating. I had to stop everything I was doing and pay absolute attention to her. That's how powerful her presence is. I didn't really know any of her stuff before I saw her but she just blew me away completely. Everyone I talked to at that show said it was one of the very best they had seen all year long. Sharon Jones is not to be missed any day of the week.
