it's odd to me how much live music I have endured and can count maybe 4 or 5 times in 10 years i had any ear-ringing of any kind. I've never worn ear plugs, although I have nonchalantly tried before and didn't like the way it felt and gave up quickly. I work in sound and my hearing is unbelievably precise still...i'm a bit amazed.

i feel the same level of amazement (with equal amount of gratitude)...and i bet i have much more mileage on my ears than you do (merely a matter of age). maybe we are just freaks of nature as it really doesn't add up (in my case, that is).

although, i do suffer from a bit of tinnitus. but, that could just as easily be from the thousands of dives i've done as well. apparently, there is a correlation.

bottom line is that it's a good idea to invest in some high(er) end plugs. on that same note, make sure to get high-quality earphones for your mp3s as well. i am almost certain that long exposure to distorted music, regardless of volume, is not a good thing for your ears either.

Yeah, eventually i'm going to have in and start taking care of my ears better, as they're my livelihood...i've met too many engineers (especially if they had been in bands or did live sound) that scream at me when i'm trying to have a normal conversation with them.

I don't use headphones much for music listening, but i've been getting in the habit using the Senn HD pros...don't really like buds

Andrew you're in your 20s. I'm talking about 30 years down the line. Just because your ears aren't ringing after a show doesn't mean you haven't fucked them up.

And yeah my ear plugs were $11 on amazon. I think they're $10 now. Work like magic. I can adjust them to hear things better. It doesn't just cut off the sound like foam ones do.

I have only one time ever felt the need for earplugs. It was a tiny venue that's notoriously loud. Instead of leaving or getting earplugs I asked the sound guy to do something, like a nerd. Then, I asked the band to tone it down. I then proceeded to yell at some tank top hipster mustache kid for blocking my view and getting too excited. I was drrrunk. And old, apparently.

Back when I worked at the El Rey and was around live music on a daily basis, I seriously considered getting custom ones at the suggestion of my bosses, but never went through with it. I might get to reconsider that this year. But seriously, Matt and all you other naysayers, for as big of music fans as you are, it boggles my mind you guys do not use ear plugs all the freaking time. Noises that are louder than 85 dB can cause permanent hearing loss. That is a blow dryer. Or a blender. I was so upset with Gabe for not wearing ear plugs at MBV at Coachella. I don't understand why someone would put themselves through that when you know it will harm you in the future. I've even worn ear plugs at Swell Season if I'm sitting too close to a speaker. You're killing the one thing you need to continue doing what you love to do.
had to go aaaaalllllll the way to the previous page.

Tessa, I ordered those Hearos ear plugs just now based on your ringing (punny!) endorsement. Over the past year, I've worn ear plugs to probably 75% or so of shows. I always use foam and it usually doesn't muffle the sound much. However, I'm pretty serious about salvaging my hearing, so it's worth it to me to try these new ones out.

Hearos are definitely better than nothing. I had actually been using the pair I got at the MBV ATP until I got the customs.

yeah ..? I couldn't tell what it was, don't see the big deal here.

Anyways I wore this pair of earplugs to the show I went to last night that I had received for free at detour fest 2008, held on to and finally decided to use. Glad I did, ears felt so much better today.

    So here's a question...
I've bought the etymotic earplugs for my daughter (12yo). She's got "sensitivity issues" and doesn't like the feel of them in her ear.
So I'm looking for a headphone/earmuff-type of hearing protection but have no idea what to get or even what to search for, specifically. I need to find something before April. We live in the boonies or I'd go to a store and ask...

just google "kids ear protection". there are a couple different companies that make little ear muff style ones, come in pink and blue, maybe other colors.

I went to see an ENT to get my hearing checked out and he referred me to someone. it's $175 total for adjustable custom musician earplugs.

Love my pair so much. By far worth the 11 bucks, and then some.

Wow, you went the whole route...nice. Are your ears bat-like or moray-eel like? I hope you chose the -9db inserts and not the next one up (-12db?). That's the one you want.

apparently my ears are fucking great. I can hear better than 95% of people. the tinnitus is somewhat unexplained. maybe oversensitivity, but there is no saying. regardless I decided to protect my super power. not sure which db inserts I am getting, I will check.
