I told him last night I think we should change all our lightbulbs in the house to CFLs to start going green. He bought a hybrid a few years ago and we recycle all the time and he likes saving money so I thought he'd be down with that. He said hell no, and actually he was thinking about buying a lifetime supply of incandescent bulbs so he'd never actually have to switch over once the government makes it a law down the road. Lame.

There have been changes in CFLs to make them have a slightly more yellow tint than traditional fluorescent lights. We have them at my work right now. I am sitting in a small office room with four of these bulbs and it looks fine and not fluorescenty. I'm willing to make the sacrifice. He evidently is not.

I hope this is common knowledge to all of you but I've recently found two people that I know that had no idea. I hope all of you eco-warriors are doing your homework before going out and evangelizing this shit.

CFL bulk are to used ONLY in areas were you plan to leave the lights on for long periods of time. It is NOT a good idea to use them in areas where you generally leave the light on for less than 15 minutes. The bathroom is probably not a good spot for them. Garages/pantries/closets/etc. are horrible places for them.

15 minutes is the breakover period, that's how long a CFL takes to truly get warmed up and it starts outpacing an incandescent bulb for efficiency. If you turn on a CFL bulb for less than 15 minutes you've actually used MORE energy than an incandescent bulb would have.


I'm sure everyone knew that already but it bears repeating becuase it's important.

Actually that's not quite right either...what they were testing was a REALLY stupid myth that it was better to leave ANY lightbulb on for a while rather than flipping it on and off for short periods. I think they found that regular bulbs use virtually no extra energy to startup, but CFLs use "23 seconds worth of energy".

I would assume that means "23 seconds worth" of the energy a CFL would use. A similar incandescent bulb would use even more energy in 23 seconds.

The old "15 minutes" bit has been going around for a long time, and there's some good reasons for it. They take a couple minutes to reach full brightness and proper color temperature. They will supposedly fail faster the more often you turn them on and off, but that doesn't matter as much now that they're getting so cheap. (Though landfilling them is certainly a concern.) And yes, they do use extra energy to start up. But to say that a CFL uses as much energy in 10 seconds as a standard bulb does in 15 minutes...ridiculous.

So you're right, but for the wrong reasons.

I've got incandescents in the closets, but CFLs in the master bathroom. My wife can easily spend an hour getting ready in the morning, with 6 CFL globes over the mirror...you can't tell me 6 x 60 watt bulbs is smarter. My wife put them in the guest bathroom, which was probably a mistake, but certainly not a big issue. (Most days, it doesn't get turned on anyway, so who cares.)

um I didn't offer fucking scientific proof, but you're fucking brainless if you think somebody simply pulled 15 minutes out their ass with no basis. It's documented by people who know far more about this shit out than you or I. (i.e. US Dept of Energy/EPA). Mythbusters is fake science, even they admit that, and there are other factors at play in the EPA's 15 minute guideline which you even admit.

you just said an hour. Nobody's arguing a fucking hour, of course CFLs are going to be cheaper in an hour. You're reaching so far that you forgot the details of your argument.

excuse me, I didn't fucking say that. You're not very quick on the uptake.
Do you understand the concept of a "break even point"? Of course the CFL levels out quickly, but then after that it still takes some amount of time for the incancescent to catch up. I don't know where you got 10 seconds, that's probably a load of crap, I've heard it's at least several minutes, but even if it were 10 seconds you still have the period between 10 seconds and the breakover point were the CFL is still burning watts, even if at a lower rate.

So maybe 15 minutes isn't the strict breakover point, but it's close. It doesn't have to be all about kilowatts/hour. You've already ceded the possible other factors. The other efficiency factor that is probably the shortened life and which raises the long term lighting cost.
