Thread: Anyone else think Wilco could be a headliner?

Default Anyone else think Wilco could be a headliner?

This is just me talking out of my ass, but they kind of remind me of Bjork last year. Multi-year perfomer that finally could get the chance to be a headliner now that Coachella is three days.

They were the closing act at Voodoo Fest, and headlined along with the Pumpkins and Rage, two of the biggest names in music.

They're in Australia in March, so chances aren't great, but I wouldn't be surprised either way.

    Bjork was a multi-year performer that multi-headlined

I can see them co-headlining with maybe the Flaming Lips?

You know, I saw Wilco at Coachella, what was it, 2 years ago, and I just couldn't get into it. I own several Wilco CDs because friends have told me how wonderful they are, but they just don't do anything for me. It's the same feeling I get when I listen to Phish, or Dave Matthews Band, or Grateful Dead. I'm not saying Wilco are horrible or anything. That's not what I mean, and a lot of people do seem to like them. Maybe if Wilco played alongside The Minus 5--i.e. "Down With Wilco" CD--I might be more apt to go see them again. But if it's just Jeff Tweedy & his bandmates, I'll probably go have some brewskies in the Heinken tent er somethin'. Leave y'all with more space to enjoy the band... =:<P

The answer is No. No one else thinks they could be a headliner.

I saw them play an amazing set last summer here in PDX. I'm sure they could headline a night on the Outdoor Theatre.

um, no. I mean, they could play coachella, but not as headliner... GV isn't going to go from Rage to Wilco, it's kinda going backwards (maybe if this was a few years ago or something when the fest was smaller)...

...and going on last at some festivals has NOTHING to do with being a headliner...

I don't know if Wilco could be at the top of the poster, but I'd sure love to see them there.

Yeah, I can think of a lot more interesting second-line bands than Wilco. But Jeff Tweedy will be doing a solo tour in April, so there's that. Colleges and festivals are specifically mentioned as desired:

And there's no way would they ever headline. Maybe they could headline the Pitchfork fest.

I don't understand how you can come to that. Just because Coldplay hasn't been around as much or is not as "talented" as Wilco, doesn't make them less of a headliner. You'd be foolish not to realize that Coldplay had a shit load of fame and a lot of media attention. When Wilco releases new albums, people give as much a shit as when The Shins release an album and maybe even less. America is in love with Chris Martin.

don't even compare fan anticipation of Wilco albums to The Shins albums. the Shins have only had one album "hotly" anticipated.

the possible reasoning is that Coldplay's big album was 2 years old by the time they headlined Coachella. they did have an anticipated album which more than garnered them a headlining slot.

i would like to see Wilco headline, but The White Stripes have a better shot.

I could possibly see them headlining Lolla considering they are from Chicago.

I wasn't talking about fan anticipation. I was talking about album coverage in mainstream media. Mainstream media being something to look at when looking for a headliner. Nobody was comparing their fans. You can't say that the mainstream media will follow a Wilco album or a album by The Shins as much as a Coldplay album. The only reason I brought up The Shins is because there is no debate as to if they can headline or not. Which is to say, Wilco is not going to headline.

    No chance.

They are a sunset act, but that is a VERY desirable time slot.
Many bands wish they had Wilco's following and critical acclaim.

when i saw them last year they opened with a fucking sick version of via chicago, three nasty drum soloes from glenn kotche, and the rest of the show lived up to the opener. really awesome.

    but not a headliner, still.

They have almost zero crossover potential for the mainstream audience. I really like them (well like 2 albums) and think they have a good live show however they don't have a headliner-capable audience or drawing power. They played before Jack Johnson at both Outside Lands and the Bridge School Benefit so I really can't see them taking on Coachella.
