    Default first year coachella: 2007

I plan to make this as short, to the point for you forum friends
    DAY1
Meet at my house just for picking up people purposes. Eat weed brownie and eat mc.donalds breakfast. it was "oh!..so good"
Drive to palm springs house, check it out, chill, drink some, lines, and out to the empire polo field, for coachella!!!!! Get in, immediately[and also seeing all those people waiting in some crazy line-will call, go to the beer gardens. After that.. Walking to the sahara tent.benny, felix, digitalism, david guetta, and taken off after that back to the home, hearing bjork out the gates.
-Party with a guy from australia that had to help build the fences for coachella, and needed to do it for i think punishment for doing something illegal at coachella a year before, and two cool drugged out guys who get into coachella for free and go just to supply the "e" and party. It was a trip listening to them, who knows if they were telling the truth..
    DAY2
Waking up after the first time doing "e". Some meat and bread and on to the drinking and lines! Taking a piss from whatever freeway it was to get off from going north on that freeway.. HONKING HORNS.. Then walking, what might have been well over a mile, to the venue after leaving the car i was in because i was so cracked out! My feet hurt so bad from the thongs i was wearing. BUT it was worth it to see the start of MSTRKFRFT!!!!! then busy p and dj mehdi! JUSTICE, and then laying down on that table that moved that was an art display.. Someone saying "you know your laying on art" and I said "its broken"
I saw TIESTO and it was a lot better than what I expected. Tiesto def makes a huge group of people rave.. DP>all
    DAY3
Waking up from one just destructive night.. Pretty much.... OD'en' on "e".
Going to beer gardens, and listening to dick at the same time. Seeing part of Ratatat. Then finishing it with RATM...thank god its over, but i can not wait until next year!!!

Fair enough; wasn't trying to kill your buzz or anything. At this hour, everything's fair game anyway.

    All right, I'm in:

Wednesday, 1:30 AM: Departed Fairbanks, Alaska. Arrived in Palm Springs 2:30 PM. Walked four miles to my hotel (fuck cabs). Took a shower and a nap. Woke up and walked a mile or so to a bar (O'Flaherty's?) for dinner- fish and chips. Had a couple of Guinnesses and watched the Padres beat the Tigers. Walked back to my hotel. Went to sleep.

Thursday: Got up at 9 AM. Took the bus to Indio, walked a couple of miles to the venue. Set up camp around noon. Walked around helping other people set up their tents and playing some disc. Took pictures. Drank a lot of water and a couple of $7 beers. Went to sleep with earplugs in.

Friday: Woke up at 7 AM by the sun. Talked strategy (what acts I planned to see) with fellow campers. Ate some breakfast. Went in to the festival at around 12:30 PM. Had my mind blown. Staggered back to camp at around 12:30 AM.

Saturday: See Friday. After coming back to camp, took a shower and accidentally left my wallet in the shower truck.

Sunday: Got up at 7 AM, realized I'd lost my wallet. Checked the shower truck, it was gone. Called my credit card company- whoever took it had already rung up $350 in charges in Indio. Cut the card off. Cut off the other card in the wallet. Borrowed $20 from a fellow camper (thanks, Phil) for food & water for Sunday and Monday. Went in to the festival at around 12:30 PM. Picked up a lot of bottles to defray water costs. Had my mind blown for the third time in three days. Staggered back to camp around 12:30 AM.

Monday: Got up at 7. Packed up camp, thanked fellow campers for their company. Made my way back to the Palm Springs airport. Walked four miles back to my Weds. night hotel to retrieve the cell phone I'd accidentally left there (fuck cabs, plus I couldn't have afforded one with the $11 I had left). Took the bus halfway back, then walked the other 2 miles. Waited in the airport all night for my flight (7 AM Tuesday morning), talking with other festivalgoers who were also spending the night waiting for their flight. Drank way too much gin & tonic out of some other Coachellian's two-liter bottle- worst gin & tonic I've ever had.

Tuesday: 7 AM: Got on my flight home with no ID (way easier than you might think) due to the stolen wallet. Bought some Burger King in Seattle with my last $6.75. Arrived back in Fairbanks at 6 PM, with exactly a dime on me.

It was far and away the best week of my life.

    can't help but share

Thursday: up @ 6:30, work @ 7:30am. Bags were strategically placed in my car the night before... trying to plan ahead, knowing I would be rushing after work. Crazy day @ work, not off until almost 8pm. Stop by sisters house to pick her up, takes FOREVER to get her stuff even more strategically placed in my car... well ok not forever, but 45 minutes which puts us @ aprox 8:45pm. Next stop Will's house, our fellow coachella goer... another hour to load his crap even more strategically into my grand-am. Then while passing wal-mart on our way out of town decide we are ill prepared for 3 days of camping in 100 degree temps, go in for 'a few things' and end up shopping for almost 2 hours... finally on the road to coachella at almost midnight. Drive way to fast down the 138, Quick stop @ the shell where the 138 meets the 15 fwy to by a crap load of blunt wraps. back on the road, while sir Will roles one for us . Finally arrive at the polo fields at aprox. 2am. Drive into the parking lot in aw of how many awsome festival goers are just arriving also, and park the car. discuss leaving the illegals in the car... decide its worth the risk ... go through security set up camp. Role a fatty and enjoy with our new neighbors. As the sun is beginning to peak over the horizon we are enjoying our last smoke of the 'night' when a friendly camper noticed us noticing him outside our tent and decided to come in threw our doggy door to join us for a smoke... first coachella memory officially made and we went to sleep.

Friday: awake by 8 dying of heat exaustion in our tent. porta potty run. blunt burned . walk around the campground. And into the fest. Music, beer, and herb enjoyed. Back to camp @ who knows what time, more alcohol and herb and sweet dreams of tomorrow

Sat: again awake much to early. porta potty run. blunt burned. showers. attempt at rest around the tent. blunt burned. into fest around 3. Music, beer, and herb enjoyed. shroomin @ dark. Back to camp @ some point. happiness under the stars while burning another blunt. And again sweet dreams of tomorrow

Sun: awake to early. porta potty run. blunt burned. showers. To the car to enjoy the AC... oh wait we should have paid more attention to where we parked... forever later finally in the car enjoying the AC. blunt burning fest 3 hrs of sleep with my car running (that couldn't have been good for it). treck back to camp. porta potty stop. blunt burning / jack daniels shin dig under new found friends shader... small amount of vomit from the JD. then into the fest. music, beer, and herb enjoyed. shroomin @ dark. back to camp. pure enjoyment at the weekend, and sadness that it is almost over.

Mon: wake much later than any other day... prolly 9ish? blunt burned. porta potty run. blunt burned. procrastination in packing our shit... blunt burned. finally pack up camp. carry it all to the road. treck to the car leaving Will to man the baggage, curb side . Find the car (again taking forever to locate it) LOL. pick up Will & our crap. Sleepy car ride home. Home around 4? Straight to my air conditioned bedroom. Sleep straight through till 7 the next morning...

    Tuesday: Back @ work @ 7:30am.
Hell of a weekend. Can't wait until April 25th 2008!!!

Oh and just a side note: My '00 Grand-Am went to car heaven only 2 months later, 2 days before a long planned road trip up to good ol' humbolt county to visit my girlfriend... I blaim the indio heat... LMAO. We will not be sitting in the new car in 100 degree temps for any length of time this year!

    Not my first Coachella, but...
Wednesday @ 8pm: looking for a new, comfortable t-shirt and shorts, grab the cheapest pair I find, still unable to find a hat that fits
    Wednesday @ 10pm: Lost
Wednesday @ 11pm: finish packing my suitcase

Thursday @ 4am: finally fall asleep
Thursday @ 8am: wake up to shower, get dressed
Thursday @ 10am-1pm: go to the Big 5 in search of space blankets, sunblock, batteries, and a hat. manage to get a couple blankets. suffer in hellish traffic from Torrance to LA for what feels like an eternity, pick up some chicken strips from kfc for lunch (they took 20 minutes and didn't even give me dipping sauce). stop at a 7-11 to get my ride a soda and myself some batteries and sunblock, which they had.
Thursday @ 1:30pm: meet my ride and her boyfriend for the first time, very awesome people. We leave LA soon after.
Thursday @ 4:30pm: arrive in Indio. we make stops to get alcohol (and sunglasses for myself), In & Out, and then they pour alcohol into the water bottles in the trunk of their car, which lots of other people are also doing in said lot
Thursday @ 5:30pm: arrive at the polo fields, park, hear bad bro music being blasted from a nearby car, and gasp at how long the line is, get into line at around 6pm, get to our spots before 7pm, attempt to reserve 20+ spots by ourselves because the organizers didn't give us Arcade Fire kids our own reserved section as promised
Thursday night: we set up our tents and the first UKK flag up 7:30pm. eventually people arrive to our group. several people crashed into our area, some didn't leave. Once there are several people in our group, most of us leave to check out the bar while the underage guy is left doing guard duty. I surprise him with a beer I smuggled out of the bar. I take a couple Benadryl and pass out as more people arrive.

Friday morning: the sun wakes me up. I get in line for a shower, and when I come back, I notice that my suitcase is missing a few shirts and a pair of shorts. And one of the pairs of shorts I brought has a broken button. Hang out with people in my group for a while. At around 10:45, myself and a camping buddy are in an enmormously long line to get into the fest, and finally make it inside an hour later. Camping buddy is a Coachella n00b so we check out the art, the site, and we get t-shirts and then I get a free BBQ tri-tip sandwich.
Friday afternoon: By 1:30pm, we're in the Gobi tent hiding from the sun and waiting for the Comedians of Comedy. Very funny sets. I had to leave after an hour because I had to pee and it was still too hot. Went to the Blue Room, texted everyone I knew, but most people were mean and didn't respond, and I just chilled there until Of Montreal.
Friday evening: After Of Montreal, I meet up with someone, and we sit in the shade chilling while I have a snack. We can hear the Arctic Monkeys and Amy Methhouse somewhat and we part ways as I head back to the Outdoor Theater to camp out for Jarvis Cocker at 7pm, when Stephen Marley was scheduled to end. He did not end until 7:25, which worried me tremendously about a short Jarvis set. Despite this, I enjoyed what I heard of his set. I did not enjoy Peaches at all, however. Absolutely horrible. But I did see Jessica Alba and Ron Jeremy.
Friday night: The anticipation for JARVIS FUCKING COCKER is unbearable. Peaches ends her set about 10 minutes early, but it takes 30 minutes to set up for Jarvis instead of the scheduled 25. Coupled with the previous Marley delay, he takes the stage at around 9pm in the coolest way possible. Thankfully we get a full 50 minutes of pure pwnage. I'm left with the choice of catching the last half hour of Faithless, the last 25 minutes of Interpol, or sticking around for Sonic Youth. I opt for the main stage, since the delays mean very little Sonic Youth before Bjork and I was too tired to walk to the Sahara. Interpol's performance was phoned in, but Bjork really puts on a show. Caught the first half up front, the last half in the back because the crowd sucked. After Bjork I go back to camp, do some awkward socializing, take a couple Benadryl, and pass out.

Saturday morning: Just like Friday morning, really. Except I'm feeling rather sick. Finally make it inside the festival site after yet another unreasonably long line at around noon. I try to nap in the Blue Room until Hot Chip and am joined by another sickly buddy.
Saturday afternoon: I meet up with someone else before Hot Chip, but we part ways during their "what's all the hype about" set. I try to get people to see The New Pornographers with me, since I was able to get two feet from the rail 5 minutes before their set without having to shove anyone. Nobody bites, but I am bored by their set, so I opt for Travis, a pleasant surprise. Skipped PB&J because the mojave was miserable enough for Hot Chip. After Travis wander around and run into the co-host of my old college radio show. He is going to see !!! instead of The Decemberists, so it is a brief reunion. Saturday evening: After the Decemberists charming set, I haul ass to the inevitably EPIC Arcade Fire, and the set was as perfect as ever. Near the end I had to start walking backwards and working to the back of the crowd so I could get to Blonde Redhead on time.
Saturday evening: Blonde Redhead starts 10 minutes late and ends on time, sadly. But I was completely mesmerized and also close enough to be hypnotized by Kazu's dancing. Then I grab some bottles (I had been doing this throughout the weekend) to recycle, and trek to the Sahara for LCD Soundsystem. Sounds good but I couldn't see a damn thing, even when inside the tent, so I leave and sit outside. Nature called and I had to leave early, and on my way out of the festival I grab a slice of pizza and catch RHCP performing "Under the Bridge". More socializing at camp until I pop my pills and pass out. Yes, I slept through the riot.

Sunday morning: Still horribly sick, woken up by the sun, etc. My only clean shirts are my new Coachella shirt and a long-sleeved shirt that was packed to wear if it got cold at night. I accidentally rip one of the sleeves and just rip the whole sleeves off. Classy. My arrival into the festival is delayed significantly for group photos. Once inside, I grab some BBQ for lunch, and have a random, gushing nose bleed. Oh well, my shirt was ruined anyway. Security summons an EMT. After this, I surf the Coachella board (others were doing this as well) from the Blue Room until it's time for the CSS signing. I wait over an hour in the scorching sun and we are told that CSS would not be doing a signing after all. Fucking lame. I almost pass out but a kind stranger offers me water.
Sunday afternoon: After the signing disaster, I head to the Gobi to catch some Grizzly Bear, and I stick around long enough to hear "Knife" and then get some frozen lemonade and head to the main stage for Explosions. Great set from them, yes, perfect mid-day chillage. Then I go to the surprisingly vacant Mojave to catch Junior Boys. Never heard them before, excluding whatever was hosted on coachella.com, and they were okay. I was only there to get up front for CSS. They brought the fun and the sex and Lovefoxxx made me fall for her again.
Sunday evening: I get another barbecue brisket sandwich and head to Placebo, a disappointing set, for sure. Weak setlist, phoned-in performance. But I'm able to get up close for AIR! HELL YES! The sole reason I stuck around for Sunday. Oops. It took an hour for the crew to put their shit together, and we are treated to a meager 20 minutes. Very sad.
Sunday night: This is where all the fun begins. I finally get texted from a couple friends about meeting up, and we do so after Air, and I walk with them as they leave the festival (didn't want to see Rage). I get a call from my ride that she wants to return to LA that night instead of in the morning. During Rage's ragey set, I'm too tired and too far in the back to properly rock out like I never finished puberty, but still enjoyed it. As I head towards the exit at the end of the encore to "beat the crowd", I notice my phone is no longer in my pocket. I go back to where I previously was standing/sitting and it's gone. I check with the lost & found and it's not there. The exit by now is unbearably packed and slow so I start panic attacking. It happens again once I get back to camp and can't find my tent since the landmarks I used to find it before are all gone now. I run up and down every aisle in the general area screaming "Arcade Fire camp?" and people either look at me like I'm psychotic or try to help. After an hour of this, I find what's left of my group, and am told that my ride has left. I'm really freaking out, but someone says they'll give me a ride. Finally able to relax, I join the massive drum circle that forms and sing along to silly songs for about an hour until I go back to my tent for sleep. My ride comes up to my tent: she never left at all, and asks if I'm ready to go. I tell her what happened. Apparently she and her bf were just packing up their stuff and resting in the car. At this point, Rage fans started burning trash, TP, and money, and it's totally time to go. I'm wearing my only remaining clean clothes at this point: Family Guy pajama pants, slippers, and my Coachella shirt.

Monday morning: We arrive in LA sometime between 9 and 10am (we took a wrong turn and it made us lost for long enough to get stuck in the morning rush. An hour later I'm back in Torrance, where I finally pass out.

Sunday afternoon (a week later): my illness (Coachella flu plus infected sinuses) has spread to my ears, so despite not having insurance, I go to the emergency room, get a prescription for antibiotics for my infected ears, sinuses, and throat. I never got my medical bill either, since it was to be shipped to an address I moved away from. Shit, I better check my credit report.

Thursday: Finish class and start packing around 3pm. Then drive down to LA from Santa Cruz.

    Friday:
Get ready to go off to the festival, but my brother is late in picking me up. he finnally shows up aroun 11:30 we all smoke a bowl and hit the road. Around 2 we arrive at indian wells, and set up the trailer. We start drinking some beer, and smoke a couple more bowls before starting to walk to the festival at 3:30. Watch Sonic Youth, kinda disspointed by the porformance. Saw some Jesus and the Mary Chain, awsome. Basically wondered around acclimating myself to the grounds, checking out the art. Closed it off with Gogol Bordello. Fucking amazing show. Then we walked back to Indian Wells.

    Saturday:
Woke up and started drinking again, we deceide to drive and not walk today, since it was horrible walking back the night before. Make a quick beer run. Have some good homemade breakfeast burritos, and off we go. Caught Kings of Leon, very good show. Checked out the night watchman, underwhelmed, then passed out in blue room watching Gogol Bordello from night before. Had lunch with chocolate shrooms for desert. Watched Arcade fire while i started to trip. Randomly ran into friends from Santa Cruz while at Girl Talk, went with them to the end of Ozomatli, and then ran off to see RHCP. Smoked mad bowls, while tripping to RHCP, great experiance. Under The Bridge was wonderful. Passed out at the Trailer.

    Sunday:
Head to festival early, but end up hanging out in the parking lot drinking jager and beer. Stayed by the main stage all day since i was into all the acts except Crowded House. Roots were great, as was Willie. Manu Cho got me all pumped up and ready for Rage. After the show, my brother drove back to LA. I slept for a couple hours than back to Santa Cruz, so could make my Monday class, stupid mandatory attendence, and graduate.

    Wedensday
Finish Class, solidify with my profs. That I’m going to a “wedding” in Palm Springs, and depart Seattle at approx Noon. Arrive at crash pad in Davis, CA at around 11pm. Spirits are high.

    Thusday
Depart Davis at about 9am. Stop for In-n-Out in the middle of bumbfuck nowhere... mmmm, double-double animal style! Realize we left too late and get suck in bullshit north valley traffic through riverside at about 3pm. Getting to the campsite before dark is starting to looking pretty shot. Get to Indio, funnel handle of Grey Goose into many water bottles (apparently we didn’t need to do this but we were rookies). 8pm get to campsite, set up in the dark and proceed to smoke & drink the night away.

    Friday
Day one. Start to realize why Coachella is heaven on earth. Get completely addicted to the sahara tent. Have the time of my life.

    Saturday
Repeat Friday but now I’m a bit more Coachella savvy. Sneaking drugs and booze around is becoming easier.

    Sunday
Realize that we don’t have to fry all morning camping and drive to local coffee and food joint. AC feels AWSOME!!! Feeling a bit weird about getting in touch with the real world again after spending the last 56 hours in Coachella-world. Find parking back in the camping lot without a problem (swear to do this all 3 days in 08) Get really exited going in to see rage. Enjoy the day and make our way to the main stage just as the roots are finishing to ensure proper positioning for rage. 10:45ish, get my world rocked until midnight and reluctantly exit the polo grounds wishing it would never end.

    Monday
Without being able to shower after Sunday we make our way to a local grocery store bathroom and take wet paper towel “baths” in the bathroom. Get many disapproving looks from old palm springs types. Head back to Davis. Shower immediately upon arrival.

    Tuesday
Drive from Davis back to Seattle. Swear to come back every year I can.

I find it surprisingly that you have such detailed memories of last year. I could not tell you what I was doing for half my time that week.

    Here's mine:
Thursday: make sure hotel reservations are in order, start driving from Tucson to Indio at about 5. Arrive in Indio at about 9, eat mcdonalds, leave mcdonalds, get to Deluxe Inn (which sounded bad from a post last year saying it was a meth hotel). It was actually pretty nice, and we slept.
Friday: wake up at about 9, and we all get ready. Some girls in the room next to us from New Jersey need a ride to the festival, get lost on the way, but make it in time to not miss anything. Get into the festival at about 12:30, watch Terry Mulan in the Sahara, pretty plain dj, but a good first coachella experience. randomly meet up with a friend I hadn't seen since I moved, enjoy the rest of the day, make out with random girl during Benny Benassi, watched Gogol, and went back to the parking lot horror for two hours of waiting to leave.
Saturday: wake up at about 9:30, get ready, and watch some tv, and get ready to leave again. The new jersey girls weren't there, so we just went the three of us, me and two friends. We get there at about 12:30 again, and enjoy the day. MSTRKRFT, Justice and LCD Soundsystem are all highlights, but the Rapture was great. We return back to the parking lot, and are involved in starting the car horn symphony in the lot right next to camping, get back to the hotel at about 2am.
Sunday: get ready and are at the festival at about 12:30 again. Good set by Anathallo really started my day off right, chilled out, saw some more bands, Ratatat and Klaxons were total highlights on Sunday for me. Catch each of the closer's sets for a while. Everywhere else was pretty much deserted because of Rage. Get back to the hotel at about 2:00 again.
Monday: the drive back to Tucson, and remembering an experience that I'll probably never forget.

    WEDNESDAY

Leave from Carbondale, Ill., for Indio with three of my buddies and all the camping supplies we could fit in a maroon, early 90s buick lesabre. Drive all day end up in New Mexico around midnight caught deep in a raucous Billy Idol sing along.

    THURSDAY
We pull in to Indio about noon, go directly for an oil change to ease the suffering of our massive Buick, which I has just driven us half way across the country. Stop off at In and Out Burger, a first for all of us Midwest kids. Hmmm....three hours to kill, why not go to TJ? Some stuff happens, we make it alive back to the camp site around midnight. Next thing I know I'm waking up on Friday.

Watched some comedians of comedy to get the day started. Caught Of Montreal's set, great live show. And fortunetly their fan base was very different than the following act. So me and my buddy were able to get in the second to front row for Stephen Marley. I didn't know what to expect from live reggae. He rocked the shit out of us. So much so that we were able to catch Jesus and Mary Chain, Jarvis Cocker, part of Sonic Youth and then we were depleated and forced to crash.

    SATURDAY
Day started slow. Biggest early highlight was being front row for Tom Morello, Perry Farrel and Boots Riley singing this land is our land. Kings of Leon rocked pretty hard. Got caught in a mash of people at the Arcade Fire on the main stage and loved every minute of it. Caught part of Girl Talk and then danced my fucking ass off at LCD Soundsystem.

    SUNDAY
At the risk of being called a dumbass, I admit we were part of the group that spent all day at the main stage. Saw Lupe Fiasco play his heart out to a smallish crowd. Explosions in the Sky were fucking great when the sun was at its highest. I remember security chucking water bottles into the air, watching the water flow into the glistening sun and thinking how beautiful the scene was. Danced my ass off for the Roots and laughed my ass off at calling the susaphone player Tuba Gooding Jr. Willie Nelson and Crowded House didn't do much for me. Rocked me face off at Manu Chao. And Rage was well Rage for the first time in 7 years.

    DRIVE HOME
We made it about 40 miles before we had to stop in Blithe and get a hotel room. That was not part of the plan.
