Default The George W. Bush Out of Office Countdown

Ok, so I got this desk calendar titled "The George W. Bush Out of Office Countdown-January 2008 Through the Bitter End." It contains quotes, shenanigans, and goings on by those in the White House. Here's January 1:

    *385 days left*

"You can fool some of the people all the time, and those are the ones you want to concentrate on."

--George W. Bush, 2001 Gridiron dinner

I'm going to post January 2 now since I'll be out of town and probably won't get a chance.

"I believe we are called to do the hard work to make our communities and quality of life a better place."

I also got such a calendar, but with different quotes.

Today's: "There are some who feel that the conditions are such that they can attack us there. My answer is: bring 'em on. We got the force necessary to deal with the security situation." - G.W. Bush, July 2, 2003

Also, did you know that the "bitter end" doesn't refer to something being bitter but rather to sailing ships, where the end of a long rope would be lashed to a "bit" when making a line fast?

Here is a bit, also called a cleat:

The end of the rope that you can see in the graphic is the bitter end.

    "is our children learning?"

they are now! I always thought it had something to do with the anger present in a lost cause... an emotion rather than a taste...

Since it's now Jan. 2nd, there are 384 days left.

    Today's message:
"The great respect that I have for your leadership, Mr. President, in this little understood, unfamiliar war, the first war of the 21st century- it is not well known, it was not well understood, it is complex for people to comprehend."
-Donald Rumsfeld, resignation speech, Nov. 8, 2006

Oops, I missed yesterday. 382 days left.

Iowa primaries were today; Obama and Huckabee won, while Hillary Clinton finished a surprising third. Dodd and Biden ended their campaigns after failing to garner a measurable showing. Any one of the five I just mentioned (well, I'm not sure about Huckabee... he's got a bit of a God complex and a shockingly regressive tax plan) would be markedly better than George W. Bush.

Isn't there one where he says something like "Fool me once, shame on you. Fool me twice...uh, well, you can't fool me again." I really don't know how to search for that.

In this case, both meanings apply.

EDIT- Shouldn't his be in the "I had no idea" thread?

Clinton's strategy is backfiring on her. In a campaign devoid of anything like an incumbent (P or VP) on either side, her strategy was to position herself as the incumbent. And people want something new, I think, instead.

Incorrect. My handy desk calendar tells me that thanks to the 22nd Amendment to the Constitution, he will leave office in 382 days.

EDIT: I just had the thought that you could be proposing the insane hypothesis that he plans to not relinquish power despite the fact that Americans will have elected a new President. I have more respect for your intellect than to believe that you actually believe this.

I was talking to my boss about the caucus results yesterday and wondered what Barack Obama's security detail is like. Despite whatever progress we've made as a nation that an African-American man can become president, there has to be a concern that some lunatic racist will think that God wants him to kill Obama and take a shot at him. My boss speculated that if a presidential candidate were to be assassinated in, say, October, that the election would be postponed out of respect for the dead. Anyone have any idea if that would be the case? And who would be the nominee for that party then, the running mate or the person who placed second for the nomination (assuming they aren't one in the same)?

While I always appreciate the support of the Walrus community, I wasn't saying he was gonna hold his breath and pout like a little kid having their parents drag them out of the toy store. I was hypothesizing that there may be an incident be it terrorist, environmental, or war-like that might call for the "postponement of elections" and "emergency powers" enacted to "stabilize and securitize" the country. And it might come at a convenient time as well. And not that I am saying there is anything wrong with that.

That's exactly what I was giving you credit for not actually believing.

The eight years in which G.W. Bush have been bad years, to be sure, but our civil liberties haven't eroded to the point that we're going to have some banana republic shit like that going on.

What's more, you can say what you want about the man- I personally can think of very few things that he's done that I agree with- but he is not a man who would dismantle the entire system of American democracy. Are you fucking joking? I can't believe I'm typing this.

    Oh hey, it's after midnight.

    381 DAYS LEFT

Today's quote on the calendar is about Bush making fun of a L.A. Times reporter for wearing sunglasses when it wasn't bright out. The reporter, Peter Wallsten, was actually wearing the sunglasses to protect his eyes, as he suffers from a degenerative eye disease.

Sorry man. I don't mean to let you down. Part of me thinks things will go smoothly. But another part of me would not be surprised if something happened.

You can't deny that there has been a pattern with alot of the things that have been done and they all point to a certain goal. So, why would they do all that work and look like the biggest assholes ever if they were just gonna bail on it and let someone else come in and benefit from all the hard work they did?

What will likely be my sole contribution for the year, from the local alt-weekly:

"We have got a bigger enemy than name callers. That is al Qaeda or people losin' their jobs." - George W. Bush
