Wilco and Andrew Bird getting high up there for once, yay. And Lily Allen came out last year in the U.K., again with the 2007 u.s. release loophole.

Oh please. That album was terrible! It sounded like a collection of Kelly Clarkson reject songs. I am a huge RK fan, and they put on a smashing, nearly "Under the Blacklight"-free homecoming show in October at the Santa Monica Civic...But goddamn. That album was like vomit in the face.

And, NPR fails again for picking tracks. I wouldn't have picked "Antichrist Television Blues" or "North American Scum" off those albums as the best tracks. Yeah, they're fun, but that's exactly it. Those songs are dancy and fluffy, but not truly representative of the sound on the rest of the respective album. If I was giving someone one song to listen to to adequately represent "Neon Bible," it would probably be "Black Mirror" or "Intervention", and, given the same situation for "Sound of Silver," it would be "Get Innocuous," no question.

Except you yourself told me you hate the song order of those songs on the record, lol.

Anyway, yeah, all the good songs that should have been on UtB were on Jenny's solo record last year instead... Still, it's fair to put it at 25.

Those Wilco and Shins CDs were incredibly disappointing. Very sad for them to be on anyone's personal top list. But I have an explanation.

Remember these results came from a poll they had on their site for the "All Songs Considered" podcast. They allowed you to pick 5 albums and not rank them. Consider this and look at their demographics.

Big-city living, 19-34, latte sipping, blog writing, slightly better informed than average radio listener. The average, not music-obsessed person probably only really heard or bought 5 new CDs this year. One or two of those would very likely be from a band with a proven track record in the last 5-7 years.

Who's got the best track record in that time AND put out a new CD this year? The Shins, Arcade Fire, Radiohead, Modest Mouse, Wilco, White Stripes, Rilo Kiley.

I think this list speaks volumes about certain behavioral aspects in non-music obsessed people's ability to consume music.

As much as I love In Rainbows, I feel this list just means that most young, well-informed people took part in their experiment.

"North American Scum" completely destroys "All My Friends" so hard, it's not even a contest.

This list does overrate some things like Modest Marr, but they must be given credit for actually choosing the correct number one.

I pretty much agree with that. I don't even understand how Rilo Kiley could have possibly made such a bad album.

my opinion of Sky Blue Sky went up after I saw them at ACL. although "Leave Me (The Way You Found Me)" and "Please Be Patient With Me" are pretty bad (they sound like Tweedy wrote them at an AA meeting) but the rest of the album is pretty good. not #4 of the year good, maybe more like #11 or something, but still.

the NPR list isn't too bad although it does seem pretty self-consciously 30-something slightly aging hipster. latte sipping indeed.

why do people keep picking 'rehab' as they key track off the amy winehouse album? I don't get it. Back to Black and You Know I'm No Good are still the only tracks I bother with.

Totally not how I listen to that CD. I guess that speaks to how good that damn CD is, that there's no obvious path through it.

I don't know how anyone can not put "Keep The Car Running" on top - iTunes tells me I've heard that damn song more than any other this year.

    After that:

    2. Black Wave/Bad Vibes
    3. Intervention
    4. The Well and The Lighthouse
    5. (Antichrist Television Blues)
    6. My Body Is A Cage
    7. Black Mirror

and the maybe No Cars Go.

I loved that song... in 2005. The new version is all fine and dandy but my 2 year old live version is equally amazing.

No Cars Go is a terrible song. I cringe every time I hear it.
While I disagree with you, I guess I see where you're coming from. It's their most corny, most obvious and pedestrian song. Where every song in Neon Bible uses all those damn musicians to craft complicated textures, No Cars Go just piles it on Disney World style.

But again, this is where the genius of AF comes through - everybody appreciates them for something different. I like a little Disney World drama in my pop music.
