Coachella '07 Itinerary & Strategy: Seeing Your Favorite Acts

Last year I went alone and ended up gaining new friends (befriended lot of fellow Coachellans in the airports, planes, Polo field, parking lot, lines, stages and at the hotel I stayed in) & seeing > 60 of my favorite acts (with minimal rest, sights-seeing, people watching, eating in lines and well-planned/timed pissing ... really I had ton of energy then).

I've only seen amazing full sets of the following phenomenal bands: Be Your Own Pet, Sigur Ros, Franz Ferdinand, Daft Punk, The Go! Team and Editors. I also immensely enjoyed The Zutons, Metric and Giant Drag that I spent lot of unplanned time in seeing them.

Best Unplanned Decision I Made in '06: Abandoned Depeche Mode early on their set and getting front row in the epic Daft Punk show and watching the full set of The Go! Team

Biggest Regrets in '06 But: Completely missing Massive Attack and Mogwai sets but I saw the amazing full live sets of Editors and The Go! Team

'07 Plans:

1. I want to experience Coachella '07 differently this time. I'm going with a friend and camping onsite this time. I'll probably spend more time relaxing & meeting people (would love to meet both The Arcade Fire and RATM fans coming from all over the world especially my friends who are coming over from UK and Europe and/or some good people in the board here) but I still would watch only full sets of my must-see/big-time favorite (new) never before-seen acts.

2. Like what I did during Tool's (and Madonna ) sets, I'll watch the soon to be historic, epic and "fun" RATM's reunion from a far distance.

When the set list comes out i'll probably plan out to the minute what I am going to see. Then, when i get there ill probably disregard all plans and let whimsy guide my course!

once the actually time go up then its pretty easy to plan. Just know where you want to go at what time and who you like better. I really encourage seeing bands even if only for a few songs that you never have heard before. Its one of the reasons to go to coachella.

See the full Jarvis set, for it may be another 11 years before he plays LA again. The rest of the festival should shut down during his set so nobody has an excuse to miss it, yes.

The Editors blow Interpol away??? That is the biggest horse shit I have heard, go buy Antics and Turn on the Bright Lights immediately and listen to both of them and stick around for their entire set, I guarantee you will have a different perspective. If I were you I would not miss one millisecond of Jarvis or the JAMC either.

For what it's worth...I have seen Interpol and The Editors both live and I thought The Editors were far superior. I also like The Back Room better than Turn on the Bright Lights...I have not heard Antics.

Still, I'm going to try yet again to get into Interpol in light of the fact that I'm probably going to end up seeing them at The Coach.

3. Because of inevitable conflicts, this is how I am seeing it right now ... the breakdown (on how much or how many am probably going to give) ... :

Friday:

*Bjork ... 4-6 songs (could go to full set if she blows me away instantly, else if not, skip to whomever must-see she is up against)

+Interpol ... 3 or 4 songs (really curious ... many are comparing the great Editors to this band but many who have seen both said "Editors will blow away Interpol". Oh well, I also like their music)

*The Jesus Mary and Chain ... 3 or 4 songs

+Arctic Monkeys ... at least 6 songs (could go full set but I've already seen them and for sure they would be up against somebody I really need to see perform live @ Coachella)

+Jarvis Cocker ... at least 6 songs (could go full set since I have not seen him but ...)

+David Guetta ... 4-6 songs (could go blah blah)

+Sonic Youth ... 4-6 songs (could go blah blah...)

+Brazilian Girls at least 6 songs

+Peaches 4 to 6 songs

+Silversun Pickups FULL SET !

+Tokyo Police CLub at least 6 songs (could go full set)

*Amy Winehouse +/- 3 songs (or none)

+Rufus Wainwright +/- 3 songs (or none)

+DJ Shadow at least 6 songs (or full set or none ... could go vs. Bjork)

*Faithless +/- 3 songs

Maybe 1 or 2 (or none) for the following given the chance (may change once am able to listen/grow to/with their songs):

^ Yup, that's exactly what happened to me with my initial Massive Attack and Mogwai plans last year.

Saturday is the most exciting and probably the most excruciating day also (in spite of RHCP) for me:

I'm seeing major conflicts here ... those 2 might go up vs. any of the following ... so please GV, let the following acts below play early in the main or outdoor stage/?tent (barring any major conflicts, I'm planning to watch them perform at least 6 songs and hopefullly their FULL SETS!):

Arcade Fire, Decemberists (actually on the bottom of my list of must sees), the good the bad and the queen, PETER BJORN AND JOHN, Blonde Redhead, Regina Spektor and Andrew Bird the second night.
and the third night Manu Chao, Air, willie nelson, lilly allen, the roots, css and tapes n tapes.

lets hope this works out. lets hope there is tickets when i have the funds.

I cannot distinguish Editors and She Wants Revenge. Both of these Interpol cover bands sound exactly the same.

Each year, I find myself torn between (1.) wanting to maximize the number of bands that I see and (2.) wanting to see full sets from select bands. Then, just a few days before the weekend, the set times are announced, and it all comes together. Usually, I see 5-6 full sets each day, a number of partial sets, and some random music from the beer garden (or while walking throughout the grounds).

My advice: take the list, separate your "must sees" from the "wanna sees," and then wait for the set times to be published. In 2004, we were fairly unorganized and missed some good stuff... by last year, we were much more organized and saw a lot more.

Every year I put together a "Must See," "Might See," and "Avoid" list. That way when the set times are announced, I just look through my list and figure out the general scope of my days. Granted, I still have tough decisions to make, but it makes it easier.

The Editors are the only band that I've seen live that have pissed me off. I was this close to booing them, but i never boo, but i did consider booing them. The fact that they are joy division/ian curtis knock offs is fine. But when the lead singer is aping Ian Curtis' epilepsy jerking about acting like he was having seizures made me sick to my stomache. What kind of douchebag does that? Its almost like a band showing up in black face because they were influenced by the blues or something then again i think taking a serious condition like that lightly, one that ultimately led to Curtis taking his life, is worse.

Anyways Friday since i practically like everyone on the bill ( that isn't a sahara act) besides Amy Winehouse, julietta venegas, and circa survive. I'll just stay all day at the main stage and get prime spots for JAMC, Interpol, and Bjork

Saturday: Will get to the main stage an act or two before the Arcade Fire and leave when the Peppers come on probably go see the Decemberists on the outdoor theatre? I want to see MSTRKRFT, VNV Nation, Justice. Must see at least one of those. Need to see Cornelius and I hope i can see Black Keys.

Sunday: worst day for me so i'll most likely be able to catch the bands i like. The Roots, Air, Manu Chao. All must sees for me. Leave after Manu Chao and go check out some other stage. Probably check out CSS, Junior Boys, and soulwax.

Well, I do agree with you about the man's stage antics, but I thought they sounded good.

And in response to someone upthread, She Wants Revenge really doesn't sound like the Editors at all. To me, they sound kind of like Bauhaus, though my Bauhaus exposure is admittedly limited. I don't think the Editors and Interpol are THAT close either. I think that's kind of a lazy comparison...although everyone seems to make it, so maybe I'm wrong.

LIVE... Interpol sounds good but it's like watching paint dry.

Editors on the other hand are MUCH more lively and sound VERY good live as well. if i had to pick between the 2 i'd see Editors again

were you alive to see Ian play yourself? if so i think then you can claim this, watching a tape of some 1979/80 performance hardly makes you an expert on a long dead singer. i am HUGE joy division fan myself. remove that stick from your butt and you might have more fun. you come off as an overly PC-elitist prick!
