Default In this thread we discuss In the Aeroplane Over the Sea

I did a search for the album title and didn't see any threads. It obviously deserves its own thread, being perhaps my favorite piece of art of all time.

One thing I like to do sometimes is look at the rateyourmusic.com reviews of the album. They're a real testament to the emotional power of the album. This is one of my favorites, by a guy with the username of x y z:

ďI could even tell you about how yesterday I read a news story about a 16 year old girl with leukemia, who knows that this coming Christmas is going to be her last. Still though, you see her smiling and stating her wish to enjoy the rest of her life as much as possible. All I was thinking of was Ďand one day we will die/and our ashes will fly/from the aeroplane over the sea/but for now we are young/let us lay in the sun/and count every beautiful thing we can seeí. I think that if I forced it a little I could have cried. Jesus man, this is the cheesiest shit you have ever heard, isnít it? I hate to say I told you so, but I told you so. You probably think Iím going completely over the top now donít you? Have I lost my mind? Youíre probably getting your protective suit on, ready to dive in and rescue me from this suffocating cheese.

But donít. Put it down. Let it go. Perhaps if you get the album too, then you might love it as well. Who knows, you might come and join me and the rest of them as we get out our guitars and serenade the night away while standing in our cheese-filled paradise. Sounds like something out of a Neutral Milk Hotel album.Ē

I myself have tried writing about the album, but I can't find the words.

Lol at the Holland, 1945 in that girl talk song, minute by minute.

I heard this album for the first time last year while driving to a friends house, I listened to it in its entirety. I sat for a few minutes in the car while two headed boy part two came to a close and thought "jesus, this is one of the best album's i've ever heard."

I want In The Aeroplane Over the Sea (the song, not the entire album) played at my wedding if I ever get married.

One of my favorite albums of all time.

My friend Josh is thinking of getting that tattoo. He's the one who showed me this album. I remember when I heard the band name I thought it sounded like some kind of shitty pop punk band (I knew little about contemporary music at the time), but after awhile he convinced me to listen to it. It is the reason that I started taking music as seriously as I did.

    In related news:

The tattoo alone makes whoever that is among the coolest girls ever.

I was pretty bummed that none of my friends really took to it. I'm trying to convince them to listen to it some more. It's an album that can do nothing for you the first 9 times, but that 10th time...

My friend used to play this album at work and I'd be stunned by the first track and then ask who it was. This happened like three times and then he made me borrow the album. Before too long all my fantasy sports teams were named after NMH lyrics. The only one I can recall right now, though, is "Dance In Your Tangles," but that's from the other album.

I was really hooked on it when it first came out, but it's gotten lost in the shuffle since then. I'm in Ohio with nothing to do for the next ten days, so I think I shall revisit it.

Little Birds is incredible, it's really disturbing on an almost visceral level, but also kind of pure and beautiful. Such is the brilliance of Mangum.

According to John Fernandez of Olivia Tremor Control, he's really active musically, he just doesn't feel like recording any of it. We discussed that.

That has one of my single favorite lyrics of all time:

"When we break, we'll wait for our miracle. God is a place where some holy spectacle lies. When he break, we'll wait for our miracle God is a place you will wait for the rest of your life."

In all seriousness, what are the chances of Jeff Mangum coming back and doing Neutral Milk Hotel stuff?

When I met the Olivia Tremor Control guys a few years ago, they made it seem like it wasn't very likely that it'd ever happen. They said he was much happier doing what he is doing now, which is just writing with friends and playing on other people's albums.
I'd be there if it happened.
