    Default A special new band

I love hearing a band that just hits you where it feels so good.

I read a review for the new Lucksmiths album today, and it seemed intriguing, so I went to Emusic and downloaded their first tape. And, when I was done listening to that, I downloaded the rest of their catalogue. They are charming, so very charming. Like Belle and Sebastian if Stuart Murdoch never got up from your bedside and started playing with the big kids. It's like sitting with your really sweet and awesome friends who decide to sing a few songs for you. I love this style of music.

What special new band (new to you, of course) are you digging?

That's pretty funny, Bmack – I did the exact same thing, only I started with their most recent album, Warmer Corners. It's pretty great.

I've also started listening to this band called Soft-Hearted Scientists. Their newest album, Taking Time to Wonder in a Whirling World, is one of my favorites this year.

It's a two disc collection of odds and ends. I'm not sure if its out in the US, but Pitchfork reviewed it today, and it sounded like good post-finals, I'm in a good mood music.

I like that whenever Bmack posts about music I don't know, inevitably it is awesome and I like it. A small thing to count on in this world of uncertainty.

I had heard of the Lucksmiths a few years ago when a friend introduced me to them. Nice and catchy, they're cool.

Most of the "new" bands I listen to you guys invariably have already listened to... But uh, let's see... I'm really digging Spiritualized and I'd never heard of them before coming to this board (and just bought an album of their recently) soooo yeah...
    Upcoming Shows:
    * Dillon Francis + Anamanaguchi -- December 28th

Going to Weekend 1 of Coachella 2014

Back when I had a car and free time I'd always put The Lucksmiths on when I was driving to the beach. Windows down, volume up, giant grin.

My latest special new band is called The Greenberry Woods. They actually haven't been a band since 1996 or something, but they made catchy guitar pop with harmonies, and I am a sucker for that stuff, believe you me. Plus, I really like their name. PF called them "sap rock", but sometimes she is kind of lame.

Good to hear. Check out Spacemen 3-Playing With Fire. You'll like it.

I like what this thread is turning in to...

My special new band is OMR. They are a male/female electro-pop duo from france. At times they sound like "more recent Blonde Redhead" having sex with Air. I think they have been around since like 2003. They have released 2 LP's.

    Ravens & Chimes.
    And Carolina Chocolate Drops.
I see in the near future a crisis approaching that unnerves me and causes me to tremble for the safety of my country. . . . corporations have been enthroned and an era of corruption in high places will follow, and the money power of the country will endeavor to prolong its reign by working upon the prejudices of the people until all wealth is aggregated in a few hands and the Republic is destroyed.

Kudos on the thread title, Bryan.

Also yay for the Lucksmiths. They're a great band. I have not heard the new collection but I may have to listen to a record from them today anyway in honor.

I am not sure what my special new band would be. I hadn't heard more than a couple songs from Uncle Tupelo before last week but now I pretty much love them so if that counts then there you go.

    Totally counts.

And, I saw Ravens and Chimes on campus earlier this year. They were good. Congrats Honest Abe, you reminded me of a good band I need to listen to more.

I just heard my first Boris song ever ("1970")...wow...not sure how representative it is of their catalog, but it was really good. I am continuing to listen to their entire discography as I type this.

This was a while ago now, but I hadn't heard of tapes n' tapes and I just saw their cd at PLAY... a sticker or something made some reference to Steven Malkmus so I bought it. It was an awesome surprise. That CD is like an instant classic...

so the song "1970" is...so far....representative of 1/4 of their catalogue. I am half way through their discography and so far half has been drone/ambient metal ((i.e. Absoluonego, Altar, Dronevil) , which I can only take so much of. Their harcore punk tunes (i.e. Pink and Heavy Rocks) are really good, as is their melodic rock stuff (Akuma no Uta, Feed Backer and Flood). I still have half to listen too...so yeah, and I think Pink is supposed to be good...right? When they play live do they mix things up or do they mainly one style?

On the last few tours they've been playing mostly off Pink and doing some extended drone stuff. literally heavy live, the sound they produce is so dense and overwhelming when they play.

I saw Boris a couple months ago with Michio Kurihara who is in Ghost and collaborated with them on Rainbow. This was their setlist:

    Rafflesia
    Rainbow
    Starship narrator
    PINK
    Furi
    Time To Go
    Sun Flower Rain
    Sweet No 1
    My Rain
    You Put Up Your Umbrella
    Just Abandoned My Self
    Farewell
unknown encore song with Wata on vocals

So a good number from the album with Michio but quite a few older tracks. And a good mix of drone/ambient and the heavier noise rock.

Pink is awesome. It is mostly the heavier noise rock.

Also I don't know either of the songs you've mentioned. Boris have an awesome, varied catalog.

Yeah, I am liking them alot, "スクリーンの女 [Woman on the Screen]" is one of the sickest songs I have heard in a long time. So far my favorite albums are Heavy Rocks and Pink.

They do need to play Coachella. They could close the gobi on Friday.
