It's hard for me to imagine which of the bands we listen to now will still be important in 40 years. There are a few that I/we have been listening to already for 10-20 years, those ones will most likely hold up over time.

I wish my dad would have told me more about the bands he saw or even played with. But, my favorite story is the show that he DIDN'T go to -- had plans to go see Otis Redding with my mom for their first date, I think recording a TV appearance or something. Mom stood him up because her parents wouldn't let her go out with him, so he didn't go either. It was Otis's last appearance before being killed in a plane crash. My dad was so upset that he almost didn't ask her out again, heh.

that wasnt a haha story but it sure made me smile .... yea i think the one show i missed and always thought about was the monterey pop festival, otis was there ... i got it confused with the jazz fest and just didnt want to go .... and like bmack said, a lot of people saw a lot of those bands .. here is a good example of that (this one was memorable for a couple of reasons for me) ....

"Many historians claimed that the Watkins Glen event was the largest gathering of people in the history of the United States. In essence, that meant that on July 28, one out of every 350 people living in America at the time was listening to the sounds of rock at the New York state racetrack."

so in theory, 349 other people could say, hey i was there, its no big deal (although i bet a lot of those people are dead now )......cr****

Well no I think he was saying if every 1 in 350 people in the US were there, those other 349 of 350 could also have gone, had similar memories and a story to tell.

I try to keep this sort of thing in mind when sometimes I'm not sure I want to make the effort to go to a show or an event. I think about stories like Ron's with the Monterey Pop Festival or my parents who were on their way to Woodstock and then just decided it was too far to drive. LOL. Helps me motivate... you never know what is going to turn out to be the most memorable and epic, right?

yea you are right, those figures are out of wiki which usually is reliable ... i had a recent Onion and the headline was "A Factual Error Was Found On the Internet" that was funny .... some of the best shows i went to were ones i didnt plan on going to because of whatever reason ... like the roo and coachella, they are great, but you think about them for months and sometimes that takes a bit away , if you know what i mean .... oh and fleet foxes is on snl next week .... last night it sort of sucked, and who the hell is Taylor Swift ... she did have perfect teeth and skin i must say though .... cr****

Woodstock 2009 is a music festival planned to occur August 15 and 16, 2009 in New York and August 22 and 23, 2009 at the former Berlin Tempelhof Airport in Berlin, Germany. The event is currently being planned by Michael Lang, promoter of the previous Woodstock festivals. The promoters have advertised that the event will be free of charge at both locations and will include most of the original Woodstock Festival performers in addition to current top acts . The slogan of the 40th Anniversary festival is "For a green World – It's a free concert from now".

Once I move to NYC, I'll be able to make cool lists like you guys.

El Paso only gets a few good shows a year.

Second row, and she waved at me. Apparently. I was too young to really remember much.

bmack, I graduated in 2005 and most of the shows that went down while I was in school I missed because I did not know about it or didn't know the band from Black Adam. Lame, I know. Didn't even know about Franz Ferdinand until months after the show.

I wasn't in town for the Grizzly Bear show in 2007. Or the Ladytron and CSS shows in 2006. Sigh.

I've been keeping my list since 2006. After seeing 8 shows in March of that year, I realized that I wouldn't be able to remember all the shows I'd seen if I kept going at that rate, so I started my list. It's nice for me to go back and read through and remember shows I've seen that were good but that I hadn't thought of in a long time. Like Interpol and Boom Bip in Davis.
