MUSE UPDATE: I will probably be able to do this uh, next weekend. I will be pretty busy this week, so I'll just plan to do it next Saturday. Haven't forgotten about it though.

"Sail to the Moon" came up on my ipod, and I remembered this thread. That's a pretty good song.

Wasn't Sail To The Moon and Pyramid Song the tracks that Jonny performed with a violin bow on the last tour?

Oh yeah I listened to HTTT a few days ago, while I was compiling the list for the top albums of 08.

I will say that it's probably the record I warmed up to the quickest since I first listened to the Bends.

2 + 2 = 5 really caught me off-guard. I think it's a tremendous opener, even though I thought Thom was singing "PENETRATION" instead of "PAYING ATTENTION" during the break-down, lol. It's a very raucous song, and one of my favorites off the album.

Sit Down, Stand Up is... weird. I do like just sitting there and listening to it, and I adore the "the rain drops" part. I feel like Thom's ability to stretch and mold words to fit whatever themes he's got running through his head (something that Jeff Buckley was damn good at) has improved significantly over his vocal work in Amnesiac. The percussion on this track is also pretty badass.

The instrumentation and piano on Sail to the Moon really make the track. Thom's almost childlike simple lyrics are pretty touching here, and I could definitely see myself playing this track on the radio show I'm going to have.

I can't put my finger on it, but Backdrifts is definitely one of my favorite tracks off of HTTT. It's just got this lure, especially with all the digital drums and what-not, that are amazing just to pick out and notice with your ears.

Go to Sleep is another awesome track (so far there hasn't been anything off of HTTT that I hate). The song structure and instrumentation on this track is pretty fucking awesome, really simple stuff that reminds me of OKC-esque Radiohead.

Where I End And You Begin is definitely another favorite on the CD. The percussion section fucking take over (I love Colin's little fill where you figure he's going to keep on following the same beat but changes it right before Thom's voice drops back in (the 1:04 point)), and the song resembles almost a conversation between Thom and God, which is really interesting, since he doesn't necessarily have to name him in order to carry the message through.

We Suck Young Blood is... even weirder than Sit Down, Stand Up in that it's got a strange song structure, and the clapping has almost a mournful southern tune to it. Not a favorite, but not a song I hate.

Meh, the one throwaway track (thus far) on HTTT is The Gloaming... I feel like the chanting on the previous tracks (namely Sit Down, Stand Up) is far superior to the stuff on this track.

There There is an alright track, and a RH single I don't hate, so kudos to Thom and co.

I Will is creepy as hell... But the harmony on this track cannot be denied.

I <3 the beat on Punchup at a Wedding, it's distinctly funky, and the piano and bass combine to drive the song off the beaten track of tossaway RH non-singles. Going with the beat, I love how Thom sounds almost incendiary as he criticizes this person of basically ruining everything (yeah I'm taking that song at face value... I know there's a deeper meaning, I just haven't figured it out yet). Probably my favorite track on HTTT.

    Myxomatosis is... Odd... Yeah... >>;;;

Scatterbrain is like... Where I End And You Begin part 2... I need to listen to it a few more times, but thus far, it's nothing special.

A Wolf At The Door is really manic, especially for a Thom song, and the guitar on the track is pretty fucking cool, but it also needs more listens.

Overall: I give Hail to the Thief a solid A. I think it's a brilliant record, and I think my overall appreciation for RH has grown a significant amount. Just so you know, here's how I'm currently ranking the RH records:

    1. The Bends
    2. Hail to the Thief
    3. a. OK Computer
    3. b. Kid A (after more listens)
    5. Amnesiac
    6. Pablo Honey

    In Rainbows is next!

    * Dillon Francis + Anamanaguchi -- December 28th

Great work! The ranking of your Radiohead records is how I would personally rank them also. I would put In Rainbows in a three way tie for third.

That is awesome how you are doing this passive... but how you put HTTT at #1 and OK at 3 boggles my mind.
I really wasn't a fan of it at all. Maybe I need to listen to it again.

I hated B&M live, but the layers that crept up in the studio version make it a lot better. The live Arpeggi from Ether Festival was better. Videotape was totally different live, I dig both.

QFT, except I haven't heard that version of "Arpeggi."

I might have to reconsider this statement. I listened to OK Computer today after a long break from it and Kid A immediately after, and now my rankings looks something like this:

    1. OK Computer
    2. The Bends
    3. Hail to the Thief/Kid A/In Rainbows CD1
    4. In Rainbows CD2/Amnesiac
    5. Pablo Honey
    ...

so true. I like the fact that there is a mellow version of it as a studio song. so I can choose which one I want depending on my mood.

I think that's the most common (mis)heard lyric in RH history.
I've convinced myself now that he says both, as a sort of joke.

By the way, Passive, you should watch some of the recent wacky webcasts, if you're up to it after all of this.

I think HTTT is the only radiohead album I liked on first listen.

in response to some of your other comments, I never appreciated the Gloaming or Myxomatosis until I saw those songs performed live.

oh, and I also really like Backdrifts. and now I have to go listen to this album again. I don't even remember Where You End And I Begin.
