I can't answer that succinctly.

Vivadixiesubmarinetransmissionplot was the first and is probably my favorite. It is through and through an album; a whole that is of one drive and design. It is sparse, slow, sad and beautiful. But beautiful as in real and true rather than glossy and pretty. "Someday I Will Treat You Good" is one of the best songs I have ever heard, musically and lyrically (counted separately or together.)
Also, as I just learned:
Good Morning Spider is a little more aggressive and more full in sound. It's a very different album than the debut but still very much the work of the same guy. This might be where I'd point newcomers - more remarkable than the newer albums but not as much of the delayed/destructed joy of the first one - but since you know the new one I'm not sure.

The 2001 album, It's a Wonderful Life is really good but not my favorite. It has a song with Tom Waits and another with Polly Jean Harvey. Also Nina Persson. The guests are mainly because Capitol finally started wondering wtf and tried to get him to be more like a normal band. It's still Sparklehorse, though, no doubt about that.


I mean, honestly, I have no idea how those first two records were released on Capitol.

Also I found this little tidbit from a Sparklehorse fansite: "Before Mark got signed by Capitol, he worked as a chimney-sweep and a house-painter. However after his then manager played what he had recorded to an A&R girl at Capitol, the A&R girl played it to the president of the company, and Sparklehorse was signed without having to play a showcase."

damien rice KILLED last night, as did the swell season and the opening kid. so so so so good. i can't wait to see him again next year. keriann, he was in a great mood last night and joked around with the audience and told us all these stories (really long story about the story behind volcano). someone yelled out happy birthday and he said "youre late!" and everyone laughed, and then vivienne started to sing, and everyone chimed in and sang him happy birthday again. he was about to play accidental babies, but he started cracking up and was like great, im trying to get all serious here and you guys are laughing. and he took that as his cue to go offstage and let vivienne do her song (london man on the motorway again). he told us a story about how easy it was to make O because he didnt give a shitt what anyone else thought of him at the time, but since then he's been very aware of what the media and everyone thought of him and his music, so he took a lot of time off and when he got to the point where he didnt give a shitt again, he wrote coconut skins. he was like "i know im all 'earnest' and shitt all the time" - and then he starts to imitate himself singing "i can't take my eeeeeyes of of youuuuuuuuu" and everyone started cracking up.

Devachan, that event is tempting for Scorsese's presence alone. I'm not too big of a John Williams fan, although he's undeniable done some of the most memorable scores in history.

Now, if the Hollywood Bowl would hurry the fuck up and book Clint Mansell/Kronos Quartet/Mogwai as part of their film score series, then we'd be in business.

I'm only thinking of giving Calla a try because it's at a small place near home and it's cheap and won't sell out. Everyone will be down the street at TV on the Radio. Ugh.

Probably (sold out), I am just not into them and don't like the venue they're playing at (Fillmore).

There are two venues in SF that are difficult for me to go to (Fillmore and Bimbo's). There's nothing *wrong* with either really, but I end up skipping almost every show at these places. I don't really like venues packed with hundreds of people. Why am I going to Coachella? *heh*
