Me? I didn't try, not able to plan a trip like that this time of year with school ongoings.

And I've seen them, Nathan, haven't read them. It's only one step away from it being his "its raining ______" or similar.

Well, at least don't reply sincerely.

Prince setlist from the late show... incredible... I guess there was an encore after the house lights and music came on???? I'm not sure. They shot a music video I guess, so I'm not sure if it was VIP only or what. Then they played Cool. Kinda pissed, but otherwise what a night/show. So fucking fun. Whole crowd was dancing FINALLY. Old people... you'd think they want to dance. NOPE.

    The Breakdown
Let's Go Crazy (incl. Frankenstein interpolation)
    Let's Go (Cars cover)
    Crimson And Clover
Nothing Compares 2 U (on piano)
The Max (on piano, and he does the rap!)
I Could Never Take The Place Of Your Man (back on guitar)
    Guitar
    Plectrum Electrum
When We're Dancing Close And Slow
    Bambi

[Sampler set] all as sample snippets w/ live vocals
    Nasty Girl (instrumental)
    When Doves Cry
    Hot Thing
    A Love Bizarre
    Love (instrumental)
    Housequake
    I Would Die 4 U
    Pop Life
    Shockadelica
    Extraloveable

    Fixurlifeup (video)
    Cool (after video)

He was having as much fun up there DJing his music and singing along with the crowd as he does playing with the guitar. Hilarious. Whatever makes the guy happy. the crowd was having fun regardless. Nothing like hearing Housequake on a big system and dancing with a ton of people.

I just watched video of Gwen Stefani at the Stones show. Question: when did Gwen turn into a bleached Cher?

I saw MURAL today at the Baldwin Hills Scenic Overlook. For those who don't know, the overlook sits atop a pretty big hill in Culver City. To get to the top, you have to climb a pretty formidable set of stairs. Some (too many, really) of the individual steps almost went up to my waist.

By the time I got to the top I was pretty beat. Anyway, MURAL is a duo of Jim Denley from Australia and Kim Myhr from Norway that play what I guess you could call free jazz, although the relationship to jazz is rather tenuous and it falls somewhere in the noise/free improv/experimental realm too. There was a lot of toying with sound, and ways to make it, but perhaps more importantly an exploration of silence. They played with a group of 9 LA musicians who played a variety of instruments both traditional and not - oboe, bassoon, sax, 12 string acoustic guitar, trombone, cello, violin, button accordion, what looked like pipes fashioned into reed instruments, breakable bits of wood, cymbals, etc etc. I'm pretty sure the drummer was moving around a power drill inside a metal bowl at some point.

The show began at the pavilion at the top of the overlook, with most of the players present. After a while of playing, they went silent, and I heard strings coming from behind us. The audience realized the show was moving, so we made our way to another part of the hill to watch the next section. This went on the whole show, with various groups of players setting up at different spots and joining in the music from them at the right time. It was cool because it gave me a feeling of movement and the importance of space.

I don't really know how to explain the sounds I heard - sometimes it was barely audible, delicate, fragile. Other times it was briefly bombastic with the horns all joining in.

After the show, and after I went down the giant steps that lead up to the hill, I sat in silence in my car for a good 15 minutes. I was just really stunned by what I saw. Oh yeah, this show was free.

I know some of you are going to thumb your noses at this, call it pretentious, or whatever, but I had a really great time and didn't pay a dime.

Here's the view from the top, going down:

I hope Beck plays a solo acoustic show in LA before hitting up the Rio Theater in Santa Cruz to play an acoustic show on May 19th.
I've seen Beck plenty of times but the thought of seeing him play an acoustic show....makes me tingly.

Saw Paramore in Vegas on Friday. Wouldn't have gone if my friends weren't going but it was a fun time. Funniest thing was the red crotch stain on Hayley Williams' pants. She was sick and had quite a few people come up to "help" her sing.

That whole thing (no need to quote the entire post) sounds really interesting.

I was DJing a friend's birthday party today and her pool deck looks out towards that hill/stairs. We thought it odd to see as many people walking up on a day as overcast as today was. That explains it somewhat.

I didnt make it but I look at a recent Mike Watt setlist and its usually full of The Clash and The Wire covers and a The Pop Group cover.

I'm interested in figuring this out as well. Last time I saw him (them), it was a 3 piece band...

From The Independent's description of the show:

Axel Willner, aka The Field, returns to SF for a very rare, live solo ambient performance. Using an array of analog equipment, coupled with video, Axel will perform a completely immersive sensory experience, unburdened by stylistic boundaries or functional responsibility, intuition becomes the only guide. the show will be accompanied by a visual set, created by photographer and artist Sonia Alvarez

From The Independent's description of the show:
The description sounds awesome, but it doesn't give a lot in the way of giving me an idea of what to expect. Maybe this is a good thing, and could either be a chance to be blown or away, or walk away disappointed. For 16 dollars I am willing to take that risk for the Field.

Yeah...the "ambient" part of that description is perplexing. Mostly because that term can mean so many things in so many different contexts.

I was wondering about that too. In the purest sense, ambient means beatless music, but I would be pretty surprised if that's what The Field is doing. Probably will be a more ethereal set, still with beats, something atmospheric to match some moody visuals.
