Anyone at the Echo last night see Willis Earl Beal? There was like literally only 50 people there. But, whoever was in the room got treated to one of the most soulful concerts I've ever seen. His stage presence, voice, etc were absolutely top notch. The banter w/ the crowd was super funny. I doubt he ever becomes a real big star but I really hope he does cause he's the real deal. Him and Gary Clark Jr tour would be amazing. Yes, he's plucking his guitar w/ his toothpick...
    Concert Schedule

6/23 Iron and Wine - First Unitarian Church
7/3 Eric Prydz - Create Nightclub
    7/28 Jay Z/JT - Rose Bowl
    8/9-11 OSL SF
10/16 Atoms for Peace - Hollywood Bowl
10/17 Atoms for Peace - SB Bowl
11/16 NIN - The Joint LV

Things I did and didn't like

They opened with the new single which I just personally don't like, it did sounds better live, but I still did not enjoy it very much. I started to almost regret not going home to bed, then they played an amazing version of "Lord Let It Rain On Me" and completely changed my mind. From there they played songs from all over their catalog, and I started to notice everyone around me seemed even more tired than myself, especially the band. They are not a lively bunch on stage, even the tambourine shaking, pretty backup singers (that are usually there to add energy) don't do much. I don't think any of them said a word to the crowd the entire night, but what they lack in energy they make up in performance of the material. This is a band that just gets up there doesn't fuck around and plays the songs. The crowd finally got back into it after the band played a great 7 or 8 minute instrumental jam (that I didn't recognize) which segued into "Ladies and Gentlemen..." The crowd cheered as soon as the sample came on, and it was good, but I couldn't help but think the acoustic version they did at Coachella in 08 was better. Most of the crowd left after that and the set kinda started to get an almost psychedelic gospel vibe to it. More people started to leave because the pacing seemed a bit strange at this point, I remember thinking, "Do they really need three epic ballads in a row?" They drew everyone back in at the end with "Come Together". The best part of tonight by far was the encore, everyone that left early fucked up. So if you read this and go to one of these shows, don't do the same. They came back out to play "Electricity" which got what few people that had stayed moving again, and then blended "Electricity" seamlessly into "Cop Shoot Cop..." which absolutely fucking kills live. Overall, pretty good show that I would strongly recommend for even the casual fan. I hope you and your crowd are more energized than I was
Thanks for this. I'm seeing them in a couple weeks.

It was the most most entertaining and intimate show with a musician I love since the gobi tent at Coachella in 2001. Wander/Wonder was one of my top 5 for 2011, and it was worth going out to hear it over the nice loud sound system and say hi to him in person. Only dissapointment I had was the lack of Balam Acab merch there. I hoped I could buy his Lp there or a poster or something.

On Wednesday, May 2nd, 7 p.m., Three Rooms Press presents the NYC book launch for Mike Watt: On and Off Bass at Le Poisson Rouge. The event will feature live performances by Mike Watt + J Mascis + Murph, with opening acts Appomattox and Dead Trend, plus a reading & signing by Mike Watt along with additional very special surprise guests. The new book will be available for purchase at the event.

    Mike Watt + J Mascis + Murph
Mike Watt got his musical start thumping the bass with legendary San Pedro punk trio, The Minutemen in 1980 and over the years, he's toured with his own groups, including Dos, fIREHOSE, The Black Gang, The Secondmen, The Missingmen, and others, and he has worked bass as a sideman for Porno for Pyros, J Mascis and the Fog, as well as punk godfather Iggy Pop and The Stooges. J Mascis and Emmett Jefferson 'Patrick' Murphy (aka Murph) were founding members of Dinosaur Jr., with Mascis listed by Rolling Stone as one of the 100 greatest guitarists of all time

    Appomattox
Appomattox is a high-energy Brooklyn trio that Deli Mag cited on its best of NYC 2011 list, noting Appomattox is “one of the best live bands in town…A welcome change from the usually passive temperament of contemporary rock, this band has found a way to stand out amongst Brooklyn’s crowded backdrop by turning the form on its head and back to its roots as a countercultural force for change.

    Dead Trend
Dead Trend is known for stripping down punk to its bare essentials; their debut EP “Bad Policy” crams six songs into as many minutes and is a welcome howl against the new conservatism and a defense of three-chord classics
the NYC Launch of Mike Watt: On and Off Bass + very special guests

In Mike Watt: On and Off Bass, tour diaries are distilled to their econo essence, and are juxtaposed with his photography from his home bass in San Pedro. Watt’s photos are exquisite and his writing is insightful, funny, and brutally honest, as he explores topics like John Coltrane, drunk female fans, his first performance with Iggy Pop, and lots more.

Major Lazer. It says so in the exhibit program on site. On it it had Nigel Godrich for the Thom Yorke day so that should have been a big clue from when the exhibit opened. Oof!

Yea.. they were solid. They had less technical problems than the other two actually. Balam Acab had a few spots where his sound popped out, and Active child had both feedback issues and poor drum balance. The drummer was playing a hybrid electronic/natural drum, and everytime he would start in on his normal drums they sounded way too loud.
