I'm really excited for tonight. I'm double dipping, first going to see Nils Frahm at the Hotel Cafe, then making my way immediately afterward to the Dilettante in downtown to see Colin Stetson. I've never done a double dip before, so I'm a bit nervous about it, but Nils is scheduled to end at 8:45 pm, the Stetson show starts at 8:30 and there are two openers, so I think I'm good!

If anyone sees a flaw in this plan, let me know...

The email I got says the Colin Stetson show starts at 8, not 8:30. I mean, you probably won't miss him either way, but there's that.

Oh, interesting. I might have to swing by the Dilettante and catch Stetson. He's so fuckin' good live.

Oh, I definitely plan to. I'm more excited to see him than I was for Coachella. And I was pretty fucking excited for Coachella.

Tonight was the best night of music I have ever had.

First, I went to see Nils Frahm at the Hotel Cafe in Hollywood. Nils came out with one of my favorite albums last year, Felt - a very moody piano-based modern classical album. I actually had no idea he was in LA until he posted on facebook to say what time he was on, about 3 hours before. At first I was disappointed - I was already going to Colin Stetson's show, and there was no way I was going to miss that. But I thought about it and realized the timing was perfect, and I could make a double dip out of it. So I quickly bought a ticket, ate dinner, and headed out. I was in traffic for what seemed like forever - about 90 minutes, but I made to the the Hotel Cafe about 5 minutes into the opener's set. I enjoyed that, it was just one dude on a guitar, but the songs were nice. The venue itself is lovely, it's very intimate and there's a great ambiance. I think it'd be an excellent place to have a second date, for example. Around 8 o'clock Nils came on and he was incredibly engaging. I've never seen anyone as skilled on the piano before. I mean, I don't know what else to say about it, but if you like quiet, ambient music at all, or the piano, you should definitely check out his album from last year.

So as soon as he finished his last song, around 8:45, I booked it to my car and headed to the Dilettante in downtown to see Colin Stetson. As I said earlier, I was incredibly excited for this show. Colin is one of my favorite artists, probably second only to Andrew Bird. This is actually my fifth time seeing him, but only the first time seeing him solo; I saw him play during LCD Soundsystem's last show, twice with Bon Iver last year, and once Saturday morning of weekend 1 of Coachella soundchecking with Bon Iver. At the first Bon Iver show last year he did a four minute solo during Holocene which until now I considered the best musical experience of my life.

So I got to Dilettante at 9:30, had to wait in line to get in (despite having a ticket), and finally got into the studio. The setup is pretty interesting: there are some large carpets in front of the stage and everyone sits on them. No one stands during the show. I guess they started late because I didn't miss any of the openers. Sarah Neufeld (of Arcade Fire) was quite good on violin, Gregory Rogrove on piano was also enjoyable (though since I had just come from Nils Frahm, it was hard to find anything else as impressive), and finally Colin came on around 11 pm. In between sets, people left their spots to get drinks and whatnot, so by this time I had made it front and center.

Colin started with the opening tracks off his second album, New History Warfare Vol 2 - Awake on Foreign Shores and Judges, playing straight through. Even though I had some idea of what to expect, I was still in awe of his strength. To give you an idea, he almost looked like he was in labor. His face was red, covered in sweat, and the veins on his biceps looked like they were about to burst. But he played through, loud and powerful, sort of rocking back and forth as he played as he is prone to do. When he finished Judges the crowd's response was electric. Everyone was impressed. Colin later said that he was dreading this performance, because he's been touring with Bon Iver for a year and "the Bon Iver stuff is easy, this stuff is a lot harder", but that after the first few songs he was having a lot of fun. He played about four new songs, which all sounded great. There's more singing through the sax in these tunes. He also played A Dream of Water, Home, The Righteous Wrath of An Honorable Man, and In Love And In Justice. About Home, he said "there's a scene in 'Judges' where there's a longing for a certain face, and the face never comes. 'Home' is about that face".

Afterwards I wanted to talk to Colin a bit, but after standing about a foot away for a second while he talked to some friends, I figured he probably didn't want to be bothered so I headed home. All said and done, I feel incredibly lucky to have been present at that show, which I consider the best I've ever seen.

Yeah, that review is fantastic, as was the show. So, the song he prefaced with the story about the whale was a new one? It might have been my favorite of the night.

I'm not entirely sure. It sounds similar to "Those Who Didn't Run" off the EP of the same name. Either way, it was great.

I too went to see Nils, he really was incredible. He is a fantastic performer and so skilled on the piano, very very impressive stuff. The duet with the audience member was a cool way to end the set, really energetic.

Went to see Deniz Kurtel afterwards at Los Globos and honestly I was bored to tears, was home by 4am. Everything sounded way too stale with very little dynamic.
