Who will be very special surprise guests

On Wednesday, May 2nd, 7 p.m., Three Rooms Press presents the NYC book launch for Mike Watt: On and Off Bass at Le Poisson Rouge. The event will feature live performances by Mike Watt + J Mascis + Murph, with opening acts Appomattox and Dead Trend, plus a reading & signing by Mike Watt along with additional very special surprise guests. The new book will be available for purchase at the event.

    Mike Watt + J Mascis + Murph
Mike Watt got his musical start thumping the bass with legendary San Pedro punk trio, The Minutemen in 1980 and over the years, he's toured with his own groups, including Dos, fIREHOSE, The Black Gang, The Secondmen, The Missingmen, and others, and he has worked bass as a sideman for Porno for Pyros, J Mascis and the Fog, as well as punk godfather Iggy Pop and The Stooges. J Mascis and Emmett Jefferson 'Patrick' Murphy (aka Murph) were founding members of Dinosaur Jr., with Mascis listed by Rolling Stone as one of the 100 greatest guitarists of all time

    Appomattox
Appomattox is a high-energy Brooklyn trio that Deli Mag cited on its best of NYC 2011 list, noting Appomattox is “one of the best live bands in town…A welcome change from the usually passive temperament of contemporary rock, this band has found a way to stand out amongst Brooklyn’s crowded backdrop by turning the form on its head and back to its roots as a countercultural force for change.

    Dead Trend
Dead Trend is known for stripping down punk to its bare essentials; their debut EP “Bad Policy” crams six songs into as many minutes and is a welcome howl against the new conservatism and a defense of three-chord classics
the NYC Launch of Mike Watt: On and Off Bass + very special guests

In Mike Watt: On and Off Bass, tour diaries are distilled to their econo essence, and are juxtaposed with his photography from his home bass in San Pedro. Watt’s photos are exquisite and his writing is insightful, funny, and brutally honest, as he explores topics like John Coltrane, drunk female fans, his first performance with Iggy Pop, and lots more.

anyone else caught the Lou Barlow / Sentridoh in-store at Origami the other day? he talked about moving to his parents house, and making the next Dinosaur Jr. album with J at his attic... he also played a couple of requests at the end including On Fire, which he forgot the beginning of the second verse... quite funny.. here's some footage.

I don't know why of Montreal was getting such a bad rap...their show at the Fillmore last night was great. Set list was very diverse and the visuals/sound was spot on in there. Maybe it was due to the show being at the Fillmore, but they were just as good as other times I've seen them.

Of course, Deerhoof were great. They need to do a headline set in that room soon.

Yeah, this actually kind of annoys me. Great setlist for SF including my two favorite songs off sunlandic twins.

The Magnetic Fields were absolutely lovely last night. Thoroughly enjoyed sitting back and relaxing with an audience that didn't feel the need to sing along and just wanted to listen to their music. Its not often you get to just listen to a group's lyrics from just their own voices, and clearly enough to digest them. That along with their live arrangements made it feel like hearing many of the songs for the first time again. John Woo is also a wonderful guitar player. And the Orpheum. What a beautiful theater. I'm so pleased that I'll be returning there for Jeff Mangum next month.

    Setlist:
    I Die
A Chicken With Its Head Cut Off
    Your Girlfriend's Face
    Reno Dakota
    Come Back From San Francisco
No One Will Ever Love You
I've Run Away to Join The Fairies
    Plant White Roses
    Drive On Driver
    My Husband's Pied-A-Terre
    Time Enough for Rocking
    The Horrible Party
    Smoke and Mirrors
    Goin' Back to the Country
    Andrew in Drag
    Quick!
    Busby Berkeley Dreams
    Boa Constrictor
    The Book of Love
    Fear of Trains
You Must Be Out of Your Mind
    Grand Canyon
    Swinging London
    It's Only Time
Smile! No One Cares How You Feel (The Gothic Archies cover)

    Encore:
    Tar-Heel Boy
    Forever and a Day

They were so good last night. Really decent set list drawing from lots of different albums. I won my tickets through Goldenvoice and was BLOWN AWAY by the seats they gave me. We had an orchestra box on Stephen Merritt's side, with nobody between us and him. I felt like a rich person and didn't even have my opera glasses.

I can only add to the words said above. I think the magnetic fields write such great music and then they put it another way live. Just the fact they redid that distortion song was incredible. Stephen merritt is the eye-ore of the music community though haha I felt like if I took a picture he was giving me the stare. Really nice show to just sit and listen to the lyrics and soothing music.

    Tomorrow night at the Echo...hmm...

To the best of my knowledge, Part Time Punks’ annual KRAUTROCK NITE is the only one of its kind (at least in this country). And it’s certainly the only place yer gonna find members of Best Coast, Moving Units, Upsilon Acrux, Chelsea Wolfe and more…coming together to form NEU!, CAN and LA DUSSELDORF cover bands!

This is a serious nite of music folks–one that was booked FIVE months ago, with all of these bands working out their sets & practicing since then! So. FYI…here’s the break-down on who comprises the bands:

FAUST & NEU! cover band are comprised of members of BEST COAST, MOVING UNITS, UPSILON ACRUX & BAD DUDES

CAN cover band is comprised of members of UPSILON ACRUX, JAPANTIES, CHELSEA WOLFE, GRANDPIRE & TES ELATIONS

And, of course, the whole nite will wrap up with a Krautrockcentric dance party–meaning you’ll be hearing tracks by Stereolab, Broadcast, Clinic, Spiritualized, Loop, Heldon and other Krautrock-influence bands mixed in with Kraftwerk, Cluster, Harmonia, Holger Czukay, La Dusseldorf and all the rest…
    9/17 - Buzzcocks - Fonda (?)
9/20 - Crosby, Stills & Nash - Santa Barbara Bowl
    9/21 - Caetano Veloso - Hollywood Bowl (?)
9/26 - William Basinski - Pasadena Arts Council
    9/28 - Bob Mould - Roxy (?)
