In this thread you will have the opportunity to win the above baseball cap. This cap will be shipped at no cost to the victor. There are no rules. There is no time limit. When I have decided that someone has won I will announce that the contest has concluded. I do not know how someone will win. It is possible but unlikely that nobody will win.
This cap was purchased almost 4 years ago in the week prior to Coachella 2004 at a shop in Los Angeles, California called "Pop Killer". It was a vintage clothes slash fucked up shoes slash punk memorabilia slash hipster store, run by a couple of Asians. Elliott Smith bought the T-shirt which he wears on one of his album covers there, several years ago, thus cementing the store's popularity with the indie elite. This cap holds a great deal of emotional significance for me. It was also not cheap for a cap.
It is a black and white trucker cap in the traditional style, with the logo from the Ghostbusters films screen-printed onto the front. The size is adjustable at the back and the cap will fit heads of most sizes. The cap is a custom made one-time deal which to my knowledge has never been reproduced and is not available elsewhere. I have been back to the store several times in the years since I purchased the cap in the hope of finding another one to either replace the original or give to friends, but never with any success. The owners explained to me that all of their caps are unique pieces, and my subsequent searches on eBay have proved equally fruitless. Even if you did manage to find a similar cap, it would not be steeped with the legendary status of this cap. By winning this cap, you will be winning a little piece of history. It is also practically guaranteed to make you popular in crowds and get you laid; I cannot even begin to tell you how many hot girls have approached me because they liked the cap and wanted to know where I bought it - I literally would not be able to count them on the fingers of my left hand.
For years this was my cap of choice and the pride of my wardrobe, and I wore it to many special events; some of them the most important of my life. I wore it throughout Coachella 2004, and every Coachella since (don't worry, the sweat has now faded) - so I am sure there is evidence of it in numerous Coachella photographs around the world - and I wore it when I met Regina Spektor a couple of years ago, as seen below:
I also wore it when I met Dave Grohl, Juliette Lewis, Neve Campbell, and numerous other celebrities. I did not wear it when I met Noel Gallagher or Courtney Love, but you can be sure I was thinking about it at the time. I wore it during several gigs, whilst playing with my own band, and whilst watching others. So as you can tell, it is something I hold very close to my heart, but I feel it is now time to let go, and to send it out into the world to continue a life of its own without me. This was not an easy decision to come to and I have tears in my eyes as I write this, but it seems like the right thing for me to do. The cap has become a little worn and tattered around the edges, plus I feel this is the best way to rid myself of the "guy with the Ghostbusters cap" tag, so I am letting you, the Coachella board, decide its destiny. All I ask is that the winner treats it right, and I hope that someday the cap could perhaps meet with Pot's shoes and the proud wearer could use them together as a "Coachella board" costume to a Halloween party.
Also, as a secondary theme to this thread, the loss of this cap is not only going to leave a hole in my heart, but also in my wardrobe. I therefore leave it up to you fine people to find me a worthy replacement. I need The Most Awesome Cap In The World. Once this has been found, I will buy it, and then wear it to Coachella 2008, and all subsequent Coachellas, and any celebrity encounters for the foreseeable future.
Commence winning.
