I was not there, but I can make a guess as to what happened. People here actually do slow down when there is fog, but there are cases where there is no fog, then you turn a blind curve or go down a hill, and suddenly you can't see a thing. In this case, the people who first see the fog slow down way too quickly, and the other people go much too fast around the blind curve or hill, and can't stop in time to avoid colliding with the other people.

I see something similar to this on my way to work, at a certain time of the year, around sunrise, you don't have the sun in your face, then you turn a blind curve, and the sun is directly in your eyes. I have the presence of mind to wear sunglasses, but evidently most of these people never thought the sun might rise, and they go from about 70mph to about 45mph very quickly.

It can be more dangerous to slow down suddenly then to gradually ease up on the gas.

i think it had more to do with key elements in the story below than it does with visibility. some people just dont use common sense.

i can see if the pile up started to happen 4ft into the fog, but then cars would start to pile up out side of the fog. i cant believe all these cars were traveling so close that none of them could stop in time. i think stupidity played a big role in this.

edit:Thick seasonal fog known as "Tule fog" typically occurs in Central California in the late fall and winter. A stretch of the highway several miles south was the scene of an autumn 74-car pileup nearly a decade ago that left two people dead.

hmm, seems to not be the first time this has happend.

actual pile-ups are quite rare in California, unlike winter in the Midwest or on the East Coast, where icy roads cause pile-ups almost daily.

Drivers in SoCal are fucking nuts, but we have to be, it's part of living in SoCal.

Oh, it's not an excuse, it's the truth. I'm not trying to cop-out, I'm embracing the fact that we drive like maniacs.

I'm actually from PHX, where people drive much differently, but I dig Southern California drivers. Either go fast or get the fuck out of the way.

Southern Californians don't drive fast or like maniacs. They just drive like fucking idiots who don't know that you can continue to proceed uphill without slowing to a crawl.

Arizona, however, does have fucking insane people.

You clearly have never been there. Large scale pileups do not happen daily on the east coast. And on occasion perhaps weather does cause accidents. what's California's excuse? It's not because you have to be crazy to live there. That's just retarded. To embrace it is retardeder.

At least California drivers are usually considerate when they are going to be assholes and cut you off. I noticed almost everyone that cut me off at least signalled. Here they cut you off and give you the finger because you shouldn't have been on their roads. Canadians may be peacekeepers but to hell with that on the road!

Me too...Except I'm older and more cantankerous behind the wheel...When our "snowbird season" arrives, I admit I drive pretty obnoxious and impatiently if I have to get somewhere.
Its like the Infinite Monkey Theorem, if you put X amount of monkeys in a room with a typewriter and ask them to give you Shakespeare 99% of them will fling their shit at you while the other 1% will masturbate in the corner.

In Santa Clarita recently, I'm sure some of you remember, we had that really bad tunnel pile up on the 5. http://www.nytimes.com/2007/10/15/us/15tunnel.html

Yes, California drivers like to do the accelerate, brake, accelerate, break motion but in some cases it's not bad driving itself that is the cause of major accidents.
