wow...thats horrible. that pic is pretty crazy...
driving home from vegas last weekend, through bakersfield the DUST storm was pretty fucking bad and i had a vibe someone would hit since you really couldn't see in front of you. thank god no one did though.
yo, you people in california cant fucking drive. i dont understand how 100 cars fucking pile up. did you not think to maybe slow the fuck down considering you cant see? hmm, i cant see, no reason to STOP!!!
What a crazy pic.
You californians- I'd sooner drive in nyc.
I was not there, but I can make a guess as to what happened. People here actually do slow down when there is fog, but there are cases where there is no fog, then you turn a blind curve or go down a hill, and suddenly you can't see a thing. In this case, the people who first see the fog slow down way too quickly, and the other people go much too fast around the blind curve or hill, and can't stop in time to avoid colliding with the other people.
I see something similar to this on my way to work, at a certain time of the year, around sunrise, you don't have the sun in your face, then you turn a blind curve, and the sun is directly in your eyes. I have the presence of mind to wear sunglasses, but evidently most of these people never thought the sun might rise, and they go from about 70mph to about 45mph very quickly.
It can be more dangerous to slow down suddenly then to gradually ease up on the gas.
i think it had more to do with key elements in the story below than it does with visibility. some people just dont use common sense.
i can see if the pile up started to happen 4ft into the fog, but then cars would start to pile up out side of the fog. i cant believe all these cars were traveling so close that none of them could stop in time. i think stupidity played a big role in this.
hmm, seems to not be the first time this has happend.

in my experience, no one knows how to fucking drive, no matter what state you live in
At least California drivers are usually considerate when they are going to be assholes and cut you off. I noticed almost everyone that cut me off at least signalled. Here they cut you off and give you the finger because you shouldn't have been on their roads. Canadians may be peacekeepers but to hell with that on the road!
I'm a terrible driver.
In Santa Clarita recently, I'm sure some of you remember, we had that really bad tunnel pile up on the 5. http://www.nytimes.com/2007/10/15/us/15tunnel.html
Yes, California drivers like to do the accelerate, brake, accelerate, break motion but in some cases it's not bad driving itself that is the cause of major accidents.
