Default When you think of an UNDER-RATED CD, what comes to mind?

For me I have a few. Recently, and I don't know why this is, I've been listening a lot to Depeche Mode's, Playing the Angel. I think it got panned by the press for the most part and I am growing to like it, even loving it at times.

    Others:

    Dodgy - Free Peace Sweet
    Brendan Benson - One Mississippi
    Boo Radleys - C'mon Kids
    The Glitter Freeze

Coachella 99-10 Vet, the run has ended in 2011

Ya I also really liked Playing the Angel.

A couple others that come to mind are Primus' Pork Soda and The Beastie Boys' The In Sound From Way Out.

You have got to be kidding me. Talkie Walkie is Air's most acclaimed album, same with the Dresden Dolls' self-titled. And Jarvis and Portishead underrated? Come fucking on.

Not so much underrated as unknown because they are all "one hit wonders" and fairly misunderstood and unrespected. Flame away...

    Rentals- Seven More Minutes
    Chumbawamba- WYSIWYG
    Information Society- Don't Be Afraid
Any Wall Of Voodoo album with Andy Prieboy
    Jellyfish- Spilt Milk
    Mighty Lemon Drops- Laughter
    Primitives- Pure
Oingo Boingo- Boingo (mid 90's album...not "BOI-NGO" from the 80's...that one sucks)
They Might Be Giants- John Henry (uneven like all their stuff, but contains some of their finest moments.)
K's Choice- The Great Subconscious Club (This is the only one that actually predates the "one hit")

Albums that are just plain unknown, but always in rotation in my house.
    Bicycle-Bicycle
Venus Hum- Big Beautiful Sky (something from this decade!)
Young Fresh Fellows- The Men Who Loved Music
Pop Will Eat Itself- This Is The Day, This Is The Hour, This Is This!
Anything by Pig, particularly Wrecked or Praise The Lard

Catch Without Arms - Dredg (beautiful album, top to bottom, aggressive and prog-metal-y at times, but displaying signs of trip hop at others)
Our Love To Admire - Interpol (there are definitely people who told me that this is "the same disc Interpol keeps putting out", it's not, get over yourselves, people)
By The Way - Red Hot Chili Peppers (having given it more and more listens over the years, I'm almost inclined to tie it with Californication in terms of greatness)
This Is Goodbye - Junior Boys (granted, I felt like this was THE record of 2006...)
Plans - Death Cab for Cutie (so many people on this message board bury the band...)
10,000 Hz Legend - Air (probably the least critically received album by the band)
    Upcoming Shows:
    * Dillon Francis + Anamanaguchi -- December 28th

Going to Weekend 1 of Coachella 2014

Talkie Walkie is NOT Air's most acclaimed album, that's Moon Safari. Dresden Dolls are always criminally underrated. I noticed that even Richdork gave them decent reviews (a point of underrating per album), but never ever reports on any news related to them, meaning that indie fucks aren't "allowed" to listen to them. And apprently at least half of all Portishead fans hate self-titled.

Horrible, shit albums were topping best-of lists on the years that these were overlooked. The proof for all of these is on rateyourmusic:
Pulp - This Is Hardcore: 3.91/5 #71 for 1998 (should be top 3)
    Air - Talkie Walkie: 3.61/5 #311 for 2004
    Dresden Dolls - s/t: 3.8/5 #124 for 2003
    Dresden Dolls - Yes, Virginia: 3.53/5 #313 for 2006
    Jarvis - Jarvis: 3.48/5 #539 for 2006

I don't know, I just get the sense that it isn't as beloved as a whole as Kill the Moonlight and their other earlier albums. *shrug*

I disagree with your choice of Playing the Angel as being underrated and that "it got panned by the press for the most part". I remember it receiving generally great reviews and even being hailed as one of their very best by many (you may not even see them in the list below). I love it the very first time I heard it and am in the camp that it is a great album.

It gets an average of 78 in metacritic which is high. Without reading any of the full reviews below, only ones that gave it a less than 60 score (where I could possibly think of the ones who panned it then) are NME, Rolling Stone and Blender. Like Pfork, those 3 are among the music reviewers I don't trust or don't read anymore.

The critics may have enjoyed Playing the Angel, but I just don't hear too many people bumpin' it. And to me, that means underrated.

    Kid A, so-so underrated.
    Amensiac, underrated.
    Mechanical Animal, grossly underrated.
Talkie Walkie? It's the one AIR album that's accepted by people who really aren't AIR fans. So... not underrated.

But Talkie Walkie is rejected by many AIR fans, which is more important.
