The Belly Up show was excellent, but to my huge shock and dismay, my usual happy place at the venue (side wall below the loft, where everyone sits and no one talks) got invaded by PBR-swilling, loud high-fiving bros who kept texting or yelling random conversations to each other at the top of their lungs. After they were joined by five equally obnoxious friends who, since there was no room to sit, kept standing in front of me, I spent a lot of the evening poking them in the back and telling them to move aside so I could see, and to shut up during the quiet parts. I'm pretty sure they were quite weirded out by the pissed off, lone older woman next to them, but they literally didn't even know what band they were there to see (they had to ask one another, repeatedly). UGH. I wish I could have a do-over.

Fun set last night, lots of talking/yelling though. Good setlist for this tour. Was actually hoping for Auto Rock but they played it a couple years ago at the Fonda so I guess it's in rotation for LA.

To those seeing at Wkd 2 - have fun (but catch the beginning of QotSA at least).

    7.23 - White Lung // 8.2-3 - HARD Summer // 8.7 - Jagwar Ma // 8.8 - Flume // 8.10 - Warpaint // 8.23-24 - FYF Fest // 9.5 - Feed Me // 10.8 - Kasabian // 10.12 - Speedy Ortiz // 10.25 - The Afghan Whigs // 10.31 - QotSA Halloween Show! // 4.10-12 - Coachella 2015 W1

Mogwai -> Darkside while everyone was at Pharrell was PERFECT.

I didn't hear any yelling (only yelling between songs) -- we were pretty front and center. Thought the crowd was pretty well-behaved for the most part -- stayed quiet during the quiet parts. But there was a dude in the very front that kept taking pictures ... for the entire set. And he wouldn't be discrete about it. He'd raise his camera or his phone (he was equipped with both) as high as he could and snap 20 pictures. Then he'd look over the pictures and then snap another 20 pictures. Security warned him a few times but eventually the lead singer guy went to security and said something like "just let them snap all the pics they want" because they never bothered him again. grrrrrr...

good to hear positive reviews. unfortunate to hear about the talking, but not in the least bit surprising. I remember the last SF show I was getting quite annoyed with the people talking through the quieter beginnings of songs. hopefully it will not be an issue tonight, though I expect it will be. I think this will be my 8.5th time seeing them.

This. Although I fucked up by leaving Mogwai early to get a spot for Darkside, and Darkside then going on 15 minutes late. How was I to have known they'd fit Mogwai Fear Satan into a festival set?

I bet, but I rarely look up setlists before seeing a band I'm anticipating. Probably should have worded that differently, haha.

last night was pretty great. I like the additional touring musician they have added, very effective on violin during Hunted by a Freak and additional percussion during a couple of songs. Remurdered is a monster of a song. and I'm pretty convinced that seeing Fear Satan live is my favorite thing ever. talkers weren't too bad. there was two pairs of people near us that were very chatty during the first song, until Kylie asked them to quieten down. (one of them was friends with someone in our party that we had just run into, awkwardly enough.)

also, I miscounted yesterday. 9.5 times now.

Yeah Thursday night was pretty fantastic. Satan has been exquisite this tour. New musician is pretty great. Oh, and I'm bummed Martin is back next week. The set lists are going to vary a lot more in the near future. The fill-in did an excellent job, but I like the surprises that get thrown on setlists when it's the full band.

Glad to hear it! What was the setlist? People on the internet haven't been reporting the last week or so. I'm interested in what they're playing now that Martin is back.

LOL. I am glad this story was Coachella message board worthy. They show in SF was great though. Offered their sound guy a beer for the setlist before the encore and he refused the beer. But, happily gave me the setlist. I am hoping they tour again in support of this album.

Last night in NYC at Terminal 5. Mogwai proved last night if you know what you're doing the sound in there isn't bad at all.

They were locked in. Amazing show.

Holy balls. What a great show in Toronto last night. The venue was perfect and sound was great - the guitars just sounded beautiful. The only problem with the sound (and really, the whole show) was that the drums really clipped. I understand they have to mic them pretty hot to keep the audible in the loud parts, but in the softer, quieter songs, the clipping was really distracting. The only other complaints were that the show was too short and Mogwai Fear Satan, in particular, was too short. Whhaaaa for baby me.

The first loud part of the set - the middle of Ithica - practically knocked me off my feet. It was incredible. I couldn't even hear myself laugh (I was laughing with joy at the incredible physicality of that wall of noise). the oxygen was sucked out of the room. This volume level was only really reached again in Rano Pano and Batcat. It was good they really took advantage of dynamics live and only did the true ear damage volume a few times in the show.

A couple songs that I have never really warmed to on record were fantastic live - Jim Morrison and Take Me Somewhere Nice. The Lord Is Out Of Control was a little sloppy and that was really the only shaky performance of the night.

I would have liked to hear other songs - songs I know they aren't playing on tour, so I can't be too upset, but Friend of The Night, would have been great, as I know they are playing it on this tour.

Right before MFS, Stuart said "This truly is our last song... Don't worry - it lasts an eternity" and then they played Mogwai Fear Satan and, sadly, it did not last an eternity.

Fun Fact: that guitar figure at the beginning of Heard About You Last Night is actually played on bass. I did not realize that.

Setlist (via Setlist.fm, confirmed by me):

Heard About You Last Night (with Luke Sutherland)
Hunted by a Freak (with Luke Sutherland)
Take Me Somewhere Nice (with Luke Sutherland)
    Ithica 279

Nice review. I really like the addition of Luke, and it appears he is starting to show up on more songs. In particular, he helps bring Remurdered to another level live. They don't seem to be varying up their sets much this tour. Perhaps they didn't have time to expand their song selection with Martin out pre-tour. With that said, I really wish they were coming around again. Two shows was not enough this tour.

Really peeved I missed them this tour. Was very disappointed when they canceled out of ATP, but I caught them at Bonnaroo that year. Always a great show and glad to know that t5 can do good sound after all. I've Dino Jr. there a few times, but really with them it's just loud--glad the sound quality with a band like Mogwai could come through.
