    Default Car Question

I have a 2000 Chevy Blazer and today while driving home, my battery light on my dash turned on. Not too sure what this means but guessing, or hoping, it's just my battery is dying. Any help?

If not, does anyone have any suggestions on where I can get a check up without getting raped with fees?

If your battery is dying while you're driving you need a new alternator, or so my limited knowledge tells me.

Does your engine turn over immediately when you start your car?

You could always use jumper cables to hook yourself up to someone else's battery and let it run for like 5-10 mins - then see if the light's still on. Most batteries will recharge themselves if given enough juice.

If the light is still on and the battery itself is dying, you could go to a Sears Auto and purchase a new battery. Then you can remove yours in the parking lot, put the new battery in, and get an environmental refund from Sears for giving them the old battery.

You could just have them replace it for you - but it's really easy and you'd save money to just do it yourself.

And you never replaced the battery the whole time right? If thats the case, yes you probably need a new one. Its the best solution, unless whereever you take it is able to make sure its good for a while longer. I finally changed my car battery, the only reason was because I let my mom borrow my car and she left the headlights on all day and killed the battery. I never used it that entire day so I never noticed. They checked it out and told me to get a new one.

What kind of car does everyone plan on buying when their current car dies? I'm looking at a volvo S40. I don't care about sports cars, and don't need an SUV..so i was looking for the best sedan in the 20-25 range

if you bought a toyota corolla for 18k, you'd get 40 miles or more per gallon, vs the 26k prius which has marginally better mpg and much higher maintenance costs.

    BlueDevil,

Your car probably needs a new battery. Your best bet is paying a couple bucks (or free in some cases) and take it to your local auto parts store. Let them know you need the life of your battery read. That will let you know if you really need a new battery.

Who said anything about a Prius? Do I look like someone who would drive a Toyota?

Honda Civic Hybrid > any Toyota, EVER

Have you seen the Lexus hybrid's that have been coming out lately, particularly the GS430 Hybrid? I guess if your that into hybrid's and want to refrain from looking like a gay IT guy or a hip LA soccer mom, than you can go that route.

Huh? A battery is a battery. Check to see what lifetime expectancy it has. Buy a new one first. Geez. They're not that expensive.

The life expectancy in question should not be the car's...IT'S THE BATTERY!

My life expectancy lowered by a few weeks by the amount of anger-induced stress I acquired from reading the stupid questions in this thread.

    calm down deltaboy.

i meant battery life for my blazers battery cuz i didnt know if there was a difference between batteries. and the internet gave a wide range of years an average battery will last so i figured maybe someone on here would know.

    is the autozone thing free?

    Blue,

Open another page on Internet Explorer, go to yellowpages.com and enter Auto Zone and the city you live in and obtain their phone number. Give them a call and say "Can you guys check my battery life for me?" a conversation that answers your question will follow.

life expectency of your battery will depend on lots of things, like, how often you turn your car on and off, climate, condition of your car's electrical system, etc.

if AutoZone won't do it for free then Checkers or somebody will.
