Default Talking Heads? Oh, ya, i hear they are pretty good

I've heard a few songs from them that sound pretty funky, But not sure what albums they are from. Can anyone suggest some good albums of theirs to start off with?

Yeah, just get "Stop Making Sense"- kind of a live greatest hits. If you dig that, you can move on from there.

I personally like "Remain In Light" & "Little Creatures" a lot.

"Speaking In Tongues" would be their other big album- it's decent, but most of the good stuff is on "Stop Making Sense", and in better versions.

"Fear Of Music" and "Talking Heads '77" are classics, but probably for more 'advanced' fans.

"More Songs About Buildings And Food" is the weakest of their early stuff IMO.

"Naked" and "True Stories" are their last two albums. Kinda fun, but totally non essential.

    Fuck it...just get this...

How about this. You pick up 77, cuz that's where they started. Then you move to More Songs, where you hear the little developments and start to appreciate that. After that, Fear of Music turns you into a raving lunatic fan, and Remain in Light will make sure you listen to everything they've ever done.

In a thread full of erroneous impressions, this is the best advice there is.

I guess I just don't get "More Songs..."

It was the second album I had ever heard by them, and it did very little for me. I appreciate it more now, but it's still my least favorite. Well, second least- I would probably pick it over True Stories.

I think I need to get that box set I posted above. Most of these older albums I only have on cassette, which means I rarely listen, which means my memory of them is probably skewed.

$87 at Amazon- 8 albums on DualDiscs.

Oh, and I agree with most of the rest of your list, so I should probably reevaluate "More Songs"

I wouldn't bother with that particular boxed set, myself, since "True Stories" and "Naked" are worth having for completists only. but that's just me.

As much as True Stories and Naked aren't essential, they are still good albums. I even have the True Stories movie.

The movie is better than the soundtrack IMO. but yeah they're not particularly bad albums, they just have long dull stretches of failed songs.

For $150, I would agree. For $87, might as well get them all.

I just went to check...all I have on CD is "Little Creatures" and "Sand In The Vaseline". Everything else is on cassette. And actually, I think "Naked" is OK, and it seems to have gone missing from my cassette collections.

My "True Stories" cassette appears to be some kind of bootleg. Smeary ink and no liner notes.

Yeah, next time my wife asks me what I want for Christmas, I'll have an answer.

Many many years ago I bought The Name of This Band Is Talking Heads on vinyl. probably like the week it came out. It was great fun, I really liked it. But then Stop Making Sense came out a few years later and The Name of... sort of became the b-team live album.

Somehow I just learned this week that The Name of... was re-released a few years ago in a significantly expanded edition. Like 33 songs, over two and a half hours of music. I downloaded it the other day, and have been totally obsessed. It is seriously fucking good. Stop Making Sense was a great movie, but this is better music. and such a deep dive into their catalogue (well, into the first 4 albums at least) with live takes from various points in their career, from a 4-piece playing in a loft to the expanded 10-piece afro-funk collective.

Listening to this stuff now, after not having paid a lot of attention to it for a couple years -- the early THs were so much more powerful than I'd given them credit for at the time. The guitar weave that Jerry and Dave put together, laid over Chris & Tina's supple rhythms, are more complex (and more interesting) than I'd recalled.

Anyway if you're curious, check it out.
