    Post mountmccabe's shows thread

Fuck that other clusterfuck. Cause I say goddamn; just hearing Pete talk while he was setting up drove deep life-affirming chills through my body. I have been listening to music by this man almost as long as I've been listening to real music and this is why I go to shows.

It wasn't a perfect show by any means but that doesn't matter. I mean, it matters to Pete because that's what he spent much of his time doing, adjusting things and fiddling with the sound mix. But that makes sense; his music is near-ambient/minimalist drones that rely almost entirely on textures.

It was glorious, for me, though. Just hearing the sounds on that first (new) song and feeling comforted; saying this is the music of Sonic Boom. This is what I know. So much joy, the release for so much childish giddyness standing there waiting for the set to begin.

There were two people on stage; both mostly played various keyboards and electronics and stuff I wasn't sure what did, exactly. The other guy played guitar for one song but I didn't get any pictures because I was too enraptured because "Let Me Down Gently" did things to my body. Seriously. I mean for fuck's sake; how many times've I heard that record?

    So yeah, wow.

There was one opener. They were called The Year of Acceleration and were from Tucson. They reminded me some of Blood Music-era Chapterhouse and Ferment-era Catherine Wheel. More prominent vocals, though. They sounded good. I really liked the rhythm section.

    Thank you, Tessa.

Maybe 30, 40 people. Kinda made me hurt inside.

Also I am a bit worried that the words "ambient" and "minimalist" might give the impression that this was a quiet show. That would be very wrong. I had ear plugs on the entire time and did not hedge them at all and it was still loud.

Sounds like a typical Modified show. The sound bounces around in there like Pong.

I am not certain. Did you get the Spacemen 3/Spiritualized/Spectrum mix Andrew and I posted a whie back? There were a couple Spectrum songs on there.

If you're looking for an album... well, uncharacteristically I'd vote for What Comes Before After. This is a compilation but it makes sense in this case because he releases a lot of singles and EPs and compilation tracks and whatnot.

I can repost that mix if you want. It ruled because John and I collaborated. We nearly came to blows, but it was worth it.

i dunno bout spectrum but spiritualized are like a jam band with brains. take that for both the positive and negative connotations, because that's how i mean it. I listen to them and I think, 'oh that was brilliant', then I think, 'ok enough i said it was brilliant already, comeon guys move on'.

I'm pretty sure I've gotten a "Walkin' With Jesus" every time I've seen Spiritualized and the last time through (2004!) I got a "Take Me To The Other Side." BEST ENCORE EVER.

Also I am most likely going to Besnard Lakes on Thursday night.

And almost certainly not going to Tucson for the New Pornographers. D'oh.

John -- I recently had Bunnygrunt play at little local music festival I help put on (and I mean it only features local bands). I have pictures and video from the event up on the ol' blog this week.

Incidentally, Karen is a bartender at a bar I have been aregular at for a good 7 years. Super freaking nice. Matt works at the coolest record store in town. Cooler than cool guy. Super nice.

    anyway.

Besnard Lakes were good last night. The openers, Starvin Hungry were good too. Much more and pictures later.
