Default Challengers vs The Stage Names

Let's get this thing settled. Both are laying claim to being the big "important" record of the year, yet only one can be king. Who will it be? Only you can decide. Please feel free to cite sources here to back up your argument. Good examples of this would be lyrics, videos, mp3's, pictures, your "feelings" and the like. Bad examples of this would be "why don't you just marry Will and get it over with already, fangirl" or "I swear to God you really are a walrus cock. You don't understand anything about anything". Please try to refrain from using this type of argument, funny as it may be. We are all intellectuals here and we can discuss this intellectually. Or at least till somebody cries.

Also, as a caveat, let me say that I have no idea how I'm going to vote here. Both are actually really good records and are equally worthy for album of the year considerations. Neither swing as hard as King Britt though, so I say Gax5 for the win. But that's another discussion entirely. The question is which act has made the record that Wilco didn't put out? Whom is more deserving of serious critical analysis here. Let's figure this thing out before Radiohead gets here, whaddya say?

    Ok go.

PS One of the aforementioned three acts is going to be the best band on the planet come 2009. Mark my words. Who will it be though? Who?

    Ok really. Go.

I vastly enjoy the feel of variety from The New Pornographers, being the multiple individual artists/vocalists in the band. They made all of the albums previous to Challengers work out nicely, and I don't think Challengers lacks that.

The best band on the planet is not O. River, of which I have not been able to understand even after listening to the mixes made on their thread. Of course, I am saying nothing against the mix makers and I am not saying they are a bad band. I do not like King Britt's vocals. Therefore, in this situation, The New Pornographers are the greatest band on the planet.

the stage names songwriting > the challengers songwriting.

i selected the third listed "recommended track" from allmusic for each album. they were "Myriad Harbour" and "A Girl in Port". here are the lyrics from each:

    I said to Jon
Do you think the girls here
(Ever wonder how they got so pretty?)
    Oh well I do

Look out upon the Myriad Harbour x3

    All the boys
    with their home-made microphones
    (Have very interesting sounds)

All the girls falling to ruin
dropping out of school, breakin' daddy's heart
    (Just to hang around)

I walked into the local record store
and asked for an American music anthology
    It sounds fun
    They taught my sketches [?]
Stuck 'em on the walls of PS1

    I took a plane
    I took a train
(Ah, who cares, you always end up in the city)

    Stranded at Bleeker and Broadway
    Looking for something to do

Someone somewhere asked me is there anything in particular I can help you with?
(All I ever want to help with was you)

Look out upon the Myriad Harbour x4

    Marie's gone blonde
    And lost a stone
    She lay on her lawn
    Spun and alone
And when the morning sun, it rose
    Upon Marie
    And her lacy clothes

    Well, it lit her up
    And she walked around
    The winding streets
    Camdon town
    Well, she don't know who
    She wants to be
    And if I knew
    I'd tell Marie

    Chorus x1

And Cindy tells me she's had fun
    Sitting back stage
    Someone's plus one
    Up in her room
    The records spin
    Needle in the grooves
    That she's worn thin

    Well, she lifts her sleeve
    And she sees a name
And she's got a smile on her face
And she's got a story you can't see
Well, that's just between that name and Cindy

And before Holly made her way
    Over the sea
    And far away
    She's telling me
    Inside her car
    Driving us back
    From the Crystal Corner bar

    I lost her there
    I fell from hell
Cut some fresh pieces from myself
    Then for a second
    Something in me
    Said leave today
    It's time, Holly
    It's time

Oh, I'm a weak and lonely sort
Though I'm not sailing just for sport
    I've come to feel
    Out on the sea
    These urgent lives
    Press against me
    I'm just aghast
    I'm not a part
    My tender head
    With my easy heart
These several years out on the sea
Made me empty, cold, and clear
    Pour yourself into me

    Chorus x1

Wait a second. That's not really fair. "Myriad Harbour" is a much better piece of MUSIC than "A Girl in Port" could hope to be. Plus, "A Girl In Port" is the standout track from Okkervil's record. I'm not sure "Myriad Harbour" is. To me, it's just the single. I'm starting to feel some of the later tracks that follow it. Saying.

Not choosing sides here, just saying.

Neither is the album of the year, nor are they important releases.

It might not be Liars, but there's nothing artistically significant about Challengers or Stage Names other than the fact that they are new releases by bands some people like. That doesn't make them important, it makes them a new commodity.

    Britt

    Britt

More of a comment really. I'm not sure I understand how Alchemy doesn't like the way the latter sings though. That's akin to rock n' roll blasphemy, in my book.

Kristen, don't get butt-hurt. This is a reasonable discussion between reasonable people. I just calls em like I sees em.

And even if that's not a good answer, it actually is. So go look like Al Franken somewhere else.

no actually I don't. I've gotten kinda bored with the 2nd half of that record. and "Please Be Patient With Me" and "Leave Me (Like You Found Me)" make me embarassed for Jeff.

Nobody fights on the Wii, they play party games.
Now, the Xbox 360. That's different.

However, I have boxing gloves and car, so if you want to resolve this ongoing dispute of ours...
