But what if your mom packed you a chocolate snack pack and your bff had 2 tapioca snack packs and you really loved tapioca. Is it cool to ask for one of his tapioca snack packs or do you offer the trade?

However, the edible parts of plants that are eaten in the United States, including tapioca which is made from cassava roots, contain relatively low amounts of cyanide.
boba.
I don't have to know. It seems enough to at least survive in SF though. Lots of people up there I guarantee you make far less than you.
Basically "It's not important enough to me to bear the time and money costs" is what you're saying. That's a completely acceptable position. The lifestyle you chose to support can't bear the added cost of going. Fine. Then again, you spent more to go to coachella than many people will be spending all week long at burning man. We all make choices.
You're making an ass of you and me.
While you're gone, I'm going to toilet paper your block.
My buddys birthday was a week or so ago, a few of us pitched in to get him some fancy shmancy bass pedal. He wanted this so he could take his bass to BM and play with Chris Marchese, look for him...he looks exactly like Stefinitelymaybe.
I do, I make choices. About all types of things in my lifestyle including how much work, fun, and positive action I can do. I guess I find Burning Man less important than the other things I chose. But I'd still go if I had a ton of money and time.Basically "It's not important enough to me to bear the time and money costs" is what you're saying. That's a completely acceptable position. plus I spent about 500 dollars on coachella. total.
While there is a minority of us self-reliant libertarian types at the man, from my experiences the vast majority of the people at the event are not just socially liberal (as is most anyone who'd want to go) but fiscally liberal to the point of socialism. Countless times I've heard people on the playa equate the "gift economy" to socialism, which makes no sense in my head. This is because socialism is all about central planning, collection, and distribution, while Burning Man puts the responsibility on the individual.
There's a minority of people like you? Countless times you've heard people on the playa say stuff? How many times have you been there to hear this?
There are over 40k people there. Almost nobody says what you're trying accuse them of. This is where BM HQ is. I've been involved with the organization itself and have worked with many of the artists or know personally many of the people who head many of the major camps (including the one that has apparently absorbed yours. Syd doesn't send out many political rants anymore, but when he did he was never pushing any of the garbage you're selling).
This is my fifth year and its just my personal experience. I'm not saying there's not a wide diversity of participants I'm just saying that from what I've found the majority are in that direction and that speaking against it often incites poor reactions.
Our camp is now effectively a behemoth. There'll be a round antique chair out at the corner by the 60' fluorescent dome, look for me lounging there.
What camp are you in this year?
I though you were still in college. You've been going to burning man since before graduating high school? Even in college you were able to take off a whole week as classes were beginning?
Opulent Temple has been a bohemoth for a while at ~300 people as far as I know. We learned our lesson as far as letting our camp get too big.
I'll PM you my camp details.
is this the dome you're refering to? No wonder they called it camp overkill.

I've been going since I was 16, I'm now a junior in college and have always been able to find a way to get time off though I usually leave late Tues night and arrive early Wed morning. Not a week. I'll check my inbox.
I think there is a funamental flaw in the "gift economy" in that everyone is greedy and most people are lazy. Everyone is greedy and selfish therefore it is doomed to failure. Simply put, without the phenomenon of "supply & demand" there is no gauge for value. Why should I give you these fine vegetables I have slaved over for months for your hemp bag? Whos to say how many vegetable = one hemp bag. So on and so forth. In principle its nice to think about it but in reality it just wouldnt work.
EXCEPT! With small groups. If you maintain a group small enough where everyone is accountable then it could work. But the more people you add the more complex it gets and the quicker it will fail.
This may be true, but it has nothing to do with the burn. There's no "gift economy" happening. Nobody really trades anything. Some people contribute art, some are just spectators. Nobody has a grudge against any lazy people, but even so after one's first trip there they inevitably want to contribute.
My first year my friends and I hopped on a small art car built by a guy from NY who spent the first half of the burn in Reno finishing the car. He then remained sober for the remainder of the week and just drove people around. He did it for no reason at all, he wasn't given anything in return.
It's just people showing off art and enjoying each other's company. It's a party. It's a pep rally for the apocalypse.
Most people who bear this grudge against it (which includes a big percentage of SF every year) simply misinterpret it's meaning. IT HAS NONE.
Or maybe it was started by a monkey so everyone ignored it.
I've wanted to go to Burning Man for quite some time now. Absolutely no one I know is even remotely interested. It took me almost 2 hours to go through the first-timer and need-to-know guide/list. Think Im going to prepare and come correct for the burn in 08. Thanks for the sig Jack.
