I don't make enough money.
If you can write good rhetoric you can apply for a free ticket, I do every year.
no wai srsly
Srsly. Deadlines and effort are involved though.
you're ruining my gag with your helpful sense-making.
Just do me a favor, Ben. When you get there try not to preach too loudly about all the hypocrisy. We're all aware of it. You'll get more than you're counting on out of this experience.
I'm fucking pissed at BM right now though. We were promised free tickets for working decompression and flambe last year and they just gave us half of what they promised. I know lots of people can't afford tickets, but they also didn't do shit to earn them.
Btw, your joke aside, there is such a thing as deep discounted tickets for those apply and qualify.
I'm well aware of the hypocrisy not just on the part of the promoters but even more so on the part of the participants. And no, i don't say a damn thing. That'd be like me going to a jock party in high school and talking down on football...or something. I've been considering setting up a little camp to talk about how Burning Man is trying for the exact opposite of socialism through spontaneous order, but then I realized everyone would just hate me and it would ruin my party. He-ha.
And i wasn't joking, I really get the grant tickets.
Does half of what you were promised mean discounted tickets? What EDM artists should I be on the look-out for this year?
Spring won't come, the need of strife
To struggle to be freed from hard ground
The evening mists that creep and crawl
Will drench in the dew and so drown
I'm the green man
The green man
Sol in prime sweet summertime
Cast shadows of doubt on my face
A midday sun, its caustic hues
Refracting within the still lake
Autumn in her flaming dress
Of orange, brown, gold fallen leaves
My mistress of the frigid night
I worship pray to on my knees
Winter's breath of filthy snow
Befrosted paths to the unknown
Have my lips turned true purple
Life is coming to an end
So says me, me wiccan friend
Nature coming full circle
I'm the green man
The green man
wrong thread sorry.

I don't get it.
I still have no idea what you're talking about with your accusations of hypocritical "socialism". Socialism has nothing to do with anything out there. Where are you getting this? It's not a sustainable community and nobody ever thought it was. It's a place where once a year people blow off steam and show off their creativity.
"half the tickets" means they only gave us half the number of free tickets they promised and I forfeited my stake because there wasn't enough to all of us that had worked for them and others needed them more.
Tipper's playing Wed night for sure at Temple of Breaks. There are a few big names like Adam Freeland, Uberzone, and Dylan Rhymes, lee coombs who will most likely be playing at Opulent Temple late in the week.
Fort Knox 5 is playing Wed night at Cirque Bezerk (and someone you know is playing after them). KJ Sawka (live dnb) is a sick fucking show and he'll also be at Cirque Bezerk.
Bassnectar and Freq Nasty will be playing fucking everywhere as usual. (you can see Bassnectar's schedule on his myspace)
Nexus will be at 10:00 & Boreal. That will be the fucking place to be on Saturday night.
None of this matters anyway. Once you get there you'll go hog wild and get distracted by a thousand things at once.
EDIT: P.S. Don't forget your fedora

I stay at Camp Overkill, which is merging with the Opulen Temple this year so I
ll definitley catch Combs (who i enjoy very much). I'd really like to catch Uberzone but I absolutely have to catch Freeland, he's the man. let me know if you figure out where he's playing. And ya, Bassnectar and Freq nasty all over.
The socialism kick comes from the fact that most of the people out there identifying themselves as believing int he socialist ideology and perceiving Burning Man as an example of the said ideology when its exactly just the opposite.

Will they be dismantling burning man and recycling him along with all other art installments brought to black rock?
The Green Man is an ancient architectural figure, not a mascot for recycling.
Oh yeah I think he was in lord of the rings.
This year our art theme will express the immanence of nature in our lives in a variety of ways. The Burning Man will stand atop a structure that resembles green mountain peak. Nestled at its base will be the Green Man Pavilion, 30,000 square feet of shaded exhibition space for the display of interactive artistic, scientific and educational models, a “World’s Fair” of emerging technologies. Artists and inventors are invited to contribute. This pavilion will be surrounded by the "Mangrove" made from simulated 'trees' fashioned from recycled industrial materials. These artificial trees will not be burned: they will survive to subdivide the blue of other skies.
But we will do much more than this. In 2007, we will calculate the amount of climate changing gases that are released into the air by the construction and the burning of the Man and its pedestal. This is called a carbon footprint. Then we'll sponsor projects in the outside world that will efface this imprint. Such actions might include the planting of trees or the development of non-polluting energy resources. Having played with fire, we'll take care to cleanse its atmospheric playground.
thats kewl.
Plant a tree for your tomorrow.
It's your tree that clears the air.
Plant a tree, trees for America.
Plant a tree today for all the world to share.
Taste the breeze, it's life inside you.
Make a promise to the Earth.
Plant a tree.
Now is the time to recognize
a tree for all that it is worth
Plant a tree your tomorrow.
Plant a tree that clears the air.
Plant a tree, trees for America.
Plant a tree today for all the world to share.
zexy.
You're still not making any sense. Who the hell is selling you this socialism bullshit? Over half the people who attend and organize the festival are from SF and I've actually been a few times and I've never heard any of that shit.
And even if you did find somebody who claims it's socialist, what does "exactly just the opposite" mean?
I like "temporary gift economy" better. No political affiliation necessary... keep it as a purely unsustainable economic system.
Gifting is great, but it's not even really about that. I wouldn't call it an "economy". You're supposed to take care of yourself to the greatest extent possible, bring everything you need. You can't count on anyone else (outside of your own camp) providing anything for you. The rule against selling items in exchange for money is not a "socialist" thing. It's to make sure nobody takes advantage of one another even if they don't intend to. Also, if you could sell food or wares then some people would try to finance their trip that way and that would most likely create way more waste. If everyone just brings exactly what they need for themselves then it minimizes the total amount of crap up there. The only 2 things you can buy there are ice and coffee. Ice is obvious, they don't want people to get sick, and camp arctica does not profit from it. The coffee is there by popular demand and it ideally prevents some people from bringing cooking equipment, which just creates more consumption, waste and gray water.
That said, if someone wants to bring some gift to the playa that's great, but it has nothing to do with any "socialist" idea. Whether it be Deep End who spends tens of thousands of dollars to give out free drinks all week or the one guy who enjoys cooking belgian waffles for random passers by, it's people getting a high off being generous, not socialist.
Laissez-faire.
Yah its more of the gift economy.....mmmmmm karmaffles.
Jackstraw's got it down. I mentioned the unsustainable part because you're bringing everything with you from the default world. As for the gifting it really isn't all that big a part of the experience. Almost all of what you consume out there is brought by you. That's more of the pseudo radical self reliance part. I radically rely on myself to make enough money during the rest of the year so I can screw around in the desert for a week.
Hell, it's worked fine for me since '99. Come on by Greenmoon for a full moon gathering on Monday, the 27th. There's even a lunar eclipse that night.
Steady groovin' word to your mee-maw.
