    Default Music Recommendation Thread

I didn't see anything like this on the board here, but it is always nice to have these types of threads. Basically, use this as a window to speak about your favorite music and try to coerce other people to check it out.

I will get the ball rolling here: Check out Sparrow Orange here and here. He just resurfaced after a 5 year hiatus and he brought a bunch of new music with him (the MySpace link has his new stuff, plus he will be releasing 3 CD's worth of material in the coming weeks through this page). If you like your music dark, dreamy, and sinister, you must give him a shot. The Last.fm link features a few free .mp3's to check out as well. Enjoy!

Portastatic (got into them because I've read them being mentioned by few people here so it's my turn)
120 Days (been a fan since the very first time I've heard few songs from them in KEXP)

I bought ton of cheap used CDs in my favorite B&M vinyl/CD store couple of weeks ago including (surprise!) Portastatic's Who Loves The Sun (Soundtrack) & Be Still Please AND 120 Days CDs (they are so good, 3 of my very favorite 2006 CDs I bought in '07).

More about Portastatic: this is a Mac McCaughan solo thing that has evolved into a real band. There is definitely appeal for Superchunk fans. They have a large catalog of albums and EPs and I've barely scratched the surface. Yay Portastatic.

Well, this isn't necessarily for unknown bands and not a place to pimp friends' bands. This is just good old fashioned "check this out" type stuff in here.

    LIsten to Pavement.
Just do it. I thought everybody did, but I'm learning that, no, they actually don't. The term Slacker rock doesn't do them justice. They have a way with off-the-cuff brilliance and accidental success that is nigh impossible to match. Check out Wowee Zowee and tell me they aren't great. Just try it.

Portastatic opened for Camera Obscura at the El Rey in February. I didn't stay tho so I don't know what they sound like.

I saw 120 Days open for Ratatat at Fonda a couple months ago. A bunch of people from work went for just 120 Days, and they absolutely rocked. I have one of their songs on my Itunes... I should buy more.

Ok gotta go back to work.

Mr. Nipples, I never disliked you, but you've just earned my trust. 400 Blows put on the loudest show in the world. I saw them opening for Mission of Burma, and they were devastatingly loud and good.

A few people have mentioned the besnard lakes but I've just looked into them a little and they're fantastic. Good tracks in "The Besnard Lakes are Dark Horse."

Also, 120 Days is incredible. I was hoping they would play next year at Coachella from what tessa just said.

Check out The Daysleepers, Hammock, and Air Formation on myspace for some good shoegaze/ambient sounds.

If you like Jesu, i would highly recommend Pelican. Their new CD "The Fire In Our Throats Will Beckon the Thaw" and also look to "This Will Destroy You".
