Thread: Those Pitchfork lists...

  1. #1

    Default Those Pitchfork lists...

At the end of the year Pitchfork throws up a list of their "top" albums. Here's what I've compiled thus far:

1999: The Dismemberment Plan - Emergency And I
    2000: Radiohead - Kid A
2001: The Microphones - The Glow
2002: Interpol - Turn On The Bright Lights
    2003: The Rapture - Echoes
    2004: Arcade Fire - Funeral
    2005: Sufjan Stevens - Illinois
2006: The Knife - Silent Shout

How long has Pitchfork been around? Were there any lists before 99?

I think they've been around since 1995 or 96. Maybe their year end lists were embarassing for the first few years.

Can't be more embarassing than The Rapture and Dismemberment Plan. The actual best albums of those years:

1999: Sigur Rós - Ágćtis Byrjun
    2000: Radiohead - Kid A
2001: Muse - Origin of Symmetry
2002: Interpol - Turn On The Bright Lights
    2003: The Dresden Dolls - s/t
    2004: Arcade Fire - Funeral
    2005: Sufjan Stevens - Illinois
    2006: Jarvis Cocker - Jarvis

Maybe I'm biased...but nothing beats Emergency & I. And Everyday...that thing was a big POS.

the rapture is definitely a laugher but can we get more onbscure than the Knife? I mean really. It's a decent enough sound and all but the best album. Not even close.

Thank god for that. The most overrated band of our time. 10 members largely percussion and so far one good album and the sophomore slump. So far Stroke 9 is a better band. Oh, and you would have eventually heard of arcade fire since you like music and indie music. Arcade Fire to me are just amazingly over rated. I just don't get the hype.

That PF chose Interpol over Wilco in 2002 says all you need to know about PF. why read their lists?

also, if you like lists and stuff, this one goes back to the mid 70s.

    Please.

Offhand I can't remember how long my personal records of my year end top 10 lists go back. I will look this up, though, and get back to y'all.

2001: The Microphones - The Glow Damn good

2003: The Rapture - Echoes Still damn good
2004: Arcade Fire - Funeral Agreed
2005: Sufjan Stevens - Illinois Disagree. Good, not best
2006: The Knife - Silent Shout Good, not best

    obscure = best album then?

umm, i buy that. yea, the most obscure album is the best album. that makes sense in my head.

i started listening to arcade fire only because i randomly found them on soulseek. i only downloaded the ep because i liked the band's name. not because it's indie and hyped up and shit.

Thus far I've only found my 2003 list and...

    10. The White Stripes - Elephant - their fourth best album.
    9. Pretty Girls Make Graves - The New Romance
    8. The Shins - Chutes too Narrow
    7. stellastarr* - stellastarr*
    6. Placebo - Sleeping with Ghosts - I hesitated, I had gotten the idea that this was their "mature album," which normally means that now they're safe, mellow, uninteresting; that now they suck. This is Placebo's most mature album but not in any of those ways.
    5. Grandaddy - Sumday
    4. Yeah Yeah Yeahs - Fever to Tell - Yes, "Maps" is a good song, but an album of songs in that vein would not be on my list. An album of songs like "Black Tongue" and "No No No" is quite emphatically.
    3. Radiohead - Hail to the Thief
    2. Super Furry Animals - Phantom Power
    1. The Decemberists - Her Majesty, the Decemberists - And catching them at like 4pm at Bumbershoot was an afterthought, a well we wanna get here early to be able to make sure to get wristbands to see the Mouse and, well, they weren't who I thought they were. And now the only reason their other album Castaways and Cutouts isn't right up here too is because it was originally release in 2001 or 2002.

    2004:

    * 10. Mountain Goats: We Shall All Be Healed
    * 9. Earlimart: Treble and Tremble
    * 8. Sonic Youth: Sonic Nurse
    * 7. The Sun: Did Your Mother Tell You? - I liked Love & Death but their second EP is better.
    * 6. Wilco: A Ghost Is Born
    * 5. Clinic: Winchester Cathedral - I wasn't so excited about this after downloading "Vertical Take Off In Egypt" from the website before the album came out... then again an instrumental was an odd choice as an introductory song.
    * 4. Modest Mouse: Good News for People Who Like Bad News - Last year it was the White Stripes that made the list with their 4th best album (out of 4.) Who will it be next year? [The upcoming Decemberists album will only be their 3rd, same for Electrelane... hmmm UPDATE: Tullycraft's upcoming will be their 4th. So they're in the running.]
    * 3. Rilo Kiley: More Adventurous
    * 2. Interpol: Antics - My favorite is "Take You on a Cruise." Usually.
    * 1. Electrelane: The Power Out - I've talked about this album and this band a lot. 11 songs; 2 instrumentals, 1 in French, 1 in Spanish with lyrics taken from Juan Boscan and 1 in German with lyrics taken from Nietzsche... and this is a very reasonable progression from the first album which was almost entirely without vocals.

I'm not going to post any more unless I find older ones.
