Thread: Beer. Not shit beer. Good beer.

So this weekend I am kegging my last beer that will be on offer at my house for thanksgiving. On tap will be a pumpkin ale, red ipa, ipa and an english pub ale. This got me thinking that the next major event that I want to brew some beer for is Coachella. I am brewing a RR Blind Pig inspired brew this weekend, but after that I need some Ideas.

So who wants to help me decide what to brew for Coachella 2014? By being this far out, many styles are possible, or it is possible to do a test run and make some tweaks before april. I will bring the beer both bottled in plastic 12 oz bottles as well as some larger plastic growlers. I'll be sure to share with whoever contributes or is curious.

I guess it comes down to a mix of what do you think the perfect coachella beer would be and what beer have you always wanted at coachella that isn't in cans or now available at the beer barn. I'll definitely be bringing some of my house IPA which is 7.2 % well balanced house favorite. It is bittered with chinook, continuously hopped with centennial and dry hopped with a mix of centennial and cascade.

About my system; it is a custom built system capable of up to 15 gallon batches. All controlled electronically, feremented in a glycol cooled conical. So it can handle just about any beer your mind can throw at it.

Bonus points if you live in so cal and want to brew up a special batch for coachella and take some away in your own fermenters.

so let's hear some requests/ideas and come up with something for me to brew.

Maverick's out of Half Moon Bay makes a really good Rye Pale Ale, "Back in the Saddle" that clocks in at 3.75% that I like for breakfast at Coachella.

Velvet merkin is good shit for sure. I love Firestone so much.

Yeah ruthless rye is good stuff. We're spoiled here in California, my buddy on the east coast is bitching cuz he has a hard time finding lagunitas lil sumpin around. That stuff is in most grocery stores over here.

Man I hope the craft beer garden isn't way out of the way at coachella again this year. I only went in two or three times but a nice ipa was a good break from heineken all weekend.

Digging the rye suggestions. Going to tweak a recipe for a red rye ale and/or a rye pale ale. I'll be sure to report back for results.

I had a rye saison from Fulton this year, and that was crazy. I'm actually really happy with most of the beer trends right now. Ryes, barrel aging, and wild yeasts are all really fun things. Granted there are some brewers that are doing horrible stuff things with these, but that will always happen I guess. I'd rather have them fucking up trying to do something interesting than getting another flagship IPA.

There's a double ruthless rye also that's pretty damn good which is easy to find around sf beer week.

Sierra Nevada barrel aged Narwhal is hitting shops now. This sounds delicious.

Description on bottle reads: "Barrel-Aged Narwhal is our deliciously dark Imperial Stout aged in Kentucky bourbon barrels. Barrel aging is a strange science; it mellows some characteristics of the original beer while intensifying others. Narwhal's aggressive roastiness has calmed, but the rich, chocolate-like malt backbone is brought to the fore. Black as midnight, this intense stout is complex with notes of cocoa and espresso balanced with hints of vanilla and toasted coconut from the oak casks. Nearly as rare as it's nautical namesake, try Barrel-Aged Narwhal while you can because like the creature itself, it will soon dive into the depths and leave nary a trace behind."

I'm with Zack on the Alpine deal. I think it will benefit drinkers outside California because they'll be able to get "Alpine" beer, but based on the inconsistency of the batches of Alpine recipes that Green Flash has brewed over the last year, it won't be as good as the beer brewed at Alpine.

It kind of makes me feel sorry for Green Flash that they've invested so much into expanding their brewing capacity and now they need to buy someone else's recipes to sell the stuff they fill their tanks with.

I'm okay with green flash absorbing alpine. Better them than AB. Hopefully this makes their beer a little easier to obtain without compromising quality.

I looking at bottles at Beer Rev. and got really excited when i saw a bigger bottle of Narwhale with Barrel aged on the top of the label. If we were ever going talk about large production of beer with a great track record of consistency, you have to throw in Sierra Nevada, well least the California brewery. I do not know if I have had a beer from Sierra Nevada's East Coast brewery.

I have tried Green Flash's Cedar Plank recently which I was hoping for anything remorsing like the Jester King's El Cedro. Cedar Plank wasn't bad and I would get that again. Yet it was on the low side of getting the cedar notes.

Any time I've been talking about beer notes lately, I just think back last week's South Park and just smile about Randy's wine tasting.

Hardly, but ab already bought out goose island and recently bought out another craft brewey. One of my buddies works for AB and he was telling me someone offered bootleggers a hefty sum and they declined. He also said that hangar 24 will probably get bought out soon. Not sure if he meant by AB but the point is larger distributors are looking to buy out some of the smaller ones.

And like I said Green flash is solid so I'm okay with it. It could've been much worse.

Sierra nevada is definitely the epitome of quality mass distributed beer. Their pale ale is one of my go to beers at bars with limited tap selections. I'm also a fan of rustic rye and summerfest which are usually available at grocery stores(in their seasons). I haven't had too much of their harder to obtain beers like narwhal but the barrel aged narwhal is delicious. Totally worth the $17 or whatever if cost. I also picked up a bottle of velvet merkin since it was there. Was tempted to grab a barrel aged Rasputin but I didn't want to blow that much money on 3 bottles of beer lol.

Speaking of merkin, I guess there's a mocha velvet Merkin out. I hear it's a pain in the ass to obtain but that sounds epic.

When Firestone Walker 12 came out six years ago, Mrs Riko gave me a hard time about buying four bottles at $13.99 each. The price seemed so high back then.

Today she picked me up a FW18, which cost $22.99, and complained the store would only let her buy one bottle.

    Times have changed.
